I think the Elves should have had a boost to both melee and ranged def. if you're more lithe and "agile," that should help you avoid attacks both from melee or range.

Nah.  Lithe and agile archers get mowed down easily in DA when within melee range. Being able to dodge melee attacks is a special skill.

Hope the quiver is yet another placeholder because Bioware has been reusing that model and texture for about 5 years now :/

Right... So? I'm saying I don't think the Dalish use last names at all, not that I think they use clan names.

Yeah, and the Dalish Warden had a last name.

Must have been a lore mistake or something. Either that or last names are simply irrelevant to Dalish and they don't really refer to them at all.

so, Human is represented by a dragon symbol.

are we to assume that's the Trevelyan's family crest/symbol?

hmmm....

so, if the clan is called Lavellan and that's your Inquisitor's family name, that means you're part of the "founding family" of the clan......

iow.....almost like a noble family.

I fired off a tweet so maybe we'll get some clarification...

Huh? I'm confused.  Why are you convinced it must be a lore mistake?

Also why are people so down about the Elf's boon? I know the Human one is awesome but why are folks so convinced extra defense is useless?

It's the Tevinter symbol.

I suppose it's also possible the Dalish Warden's father was from some Mahariel clan, and was transferred in as first of Sabrae clan like Merrill supposedly was - and rather than adopt the Sabrae name he just decided to stick with Mahariel.

Could be an explanation if it ends up they use clan names, I guess.

I doubt the final boss will be using a bow and arrow... it's just way too situational for me.  Magic resistance covers a lot of things, including dragon's breath most likely.  More HP is always nice, and an extra talent point is extremely useful for any character.

Because we've never once heard of a Dalish having a last name, not in the games or comics or short films or books. The only, sole only case of a Dalish having a last name, is our Warden. So seeing as the Dalish Warden having a last name is such a rare exception, I'm thinking it's an anomaly.

Extra defense isn't great because defense in general is getting more and more useless as the series goes on (it was a gamebreaker in DAO, and was practically irrelevant in DA2), and it's only for ranged attacks instead melee too so the usefulness is limited.

Gotta say I'm REALLY loving that rogue iconic armor, hopefully I can craft it as a warrior it would be all I wear, generally I like rogue armor aesthetics in DA but I want to complete the protagonist trifecta of rogue-Mage-warrior so this crafting system could be my saving grace.

I agree that magic defense is more useful.  However if you're always going to be fighting at range then having extra defense against one of the only ways people will hit you is a good/useful thing right?

if it not the best of the best it suck... or at least thats what gaming forums keep telling me, personally think is fine. hmmm, I wonder if any magic counts as ranged... in any case it'll help against archers which are general fairly common and sometimes very annoying. not going to kill to many bosses with it but it''ll make getting there a little easier

note to self drink more coffee

It's better than nothing, but a flat defense increase against melee attacks and ranged attacks would definitely have been better than that.

I agree that it was irrelevant in DA2 however in DA2 you could also have 100 potions in your inventory and heal after every battle.  In a game with limited potions, few healing spells, and what they claim to be increased difficulty I would assume defense would definitely be a big deal.

It was irrelevant because high defense didn't let you dodge nearly as much as it did in DAO. You could become practically untouchable with high enough defense in DAO, whereas you can't get anywhere near that even with maximum defense stats in DA2. The actual results of that stat are being more and more reduced as time goes on. I think it's to counter the fact that manually dodging attacks is doable now unlike in DAO.

Because elves are the designated buttmonkeys of the setting.

While it doesn't make too much of a difference either way, I would say that the elf and dwarf racial bonuses are the better ones.  The only reason I say that is because they are both percentage based, so while qunari and human might have the early advantage, as the game goes on and enemy magic/ranged damage increases, the elf and dwarf bonuses only get better and better.

While I don't know the exact hp scales for DAI, 50 hp doesn't really sound like a lot.  Perhaps 5% extra hp would put it more in line with the dwarf/elf bonuses, so that it gets better and better as the game goes on.

But like I said, not really a huge deal, unless there was some sort of competitive MP mode in the game.  Then of course people might complain about these little imbalances.  But yeah, the main point I was trying to get across is that in a long RPG, I think abilities that scale (elf/dwarf racials) are a lot more powerful than simple base amounts (qunari/human).
