Though Tantervale was my first choice, Ostwick was the second

It's one thing that always sort of bothered me about the HN origin. Why send Fergus with the troops to Ostagar if he's the heir? You're better off sending the spare if you've got to send someone.
Because the prospective heir needs to be able to lead troops in battle. It also gives your backup some administrative experience at home.
Our nobility probably won't matter much, either. I've heard some rumors that different backgrounds give you different stuff at the beginning (mercs for qunari, spies for dwarves, money for nobles, etc.), but chances are those are just rumors. If you want to play a noble character who is only interested in other characters with noble blood, you do have options, though.
I wouldn't be surprised if our nobility helps us in certain noble circles. They probably have a better grasp of politics than the other races would.

Not necessarily.
Teyrn appears to be an Alamarri title, as it predades the creation of the nation of Ferelden. It probably just means that the people of Ostwick are also descended from Alamarri barbarians. No blood connection to Calenhad or the Amells (thank the Maker) is necessary.
I thought it was stated in World of Thedas that all modern human civilizations (at least on the known map) were descended from the Alamarri people. At the very least I believe the "common tongue" everyone speaks was derived from Alamarri language.
What I really like about the idea of the city-states is how they can all choose what to include in their own cultural heritage, they aren't sort of bound to a standard set by a country they happen to be located within.

Well Tevinter certainly wasn't

Oh, you're right. After looking it up I guess that was just the south-eastern portion of the known Thedosian map they settled.
Or to be more specific. "...the Alamarri were given the land that makes today's Ferelden, parts of Orlais, and Free Marches."

The common trade tongue is actually derived from a dwarven dialect.
Also not all humans have Alamarri origins. The Orlesians for example are said to descend from two different tribes known as the Ciriane and the Inghirsh. The Tevinter are descended from Neromenians and Qarinus. Most Free Marchers are descended by people known as the Planasene.
Given the Teryn title, perhaps Ostwick was settled either in full or part by an Alamarri tribe.

According to the Wiki, the Alamarri were given lands that are modern-day Ferelden, parts of Orlais, and the Free Marches as spoils in their war against Tevinter. This was around -171 Ancient, so about 1k years before "modern" DA.
If the Alamarri were the dominant culture in both Frerelden and the Free Marches, it makes sense they'd have similar cultural titles.

The common tongue is a dwarven derivative adopted and spread by the Tevinter for trade purposes.I thought it was stated in World of Thedas that all modern human civilizations (at least on the known map) were descended from the Alamarri people. I'm just happy it's not Kirkwall or Starkhaven since i wanted a new city with new lore. Ostwick is definitively an interesting choice as it looks like a very paranoid, military minded city state since it seems to be in constant readiness for a Qunari invasion. I also like how the human inquisitor will have clear ties with the chantry and templars but will be given the option to show their true feelings about them, possibly being forced to do chantry-related things by a pro-chantry family which can form resentment. For my inquisitor Ostwick works great because he will be both pro templar and anti-Qunari. With the title Teryn, Qstwick also clearly has ties with the natives of Ferelden and clear trade with that nation, specifically Highever.
Some other city states do sound cool though. Tantervale being a powerful, strict religious compound. Wycome with it's freedom and wine sounds like a fun city my Inquisitor would know very well. Ansburg with it's farms and seemingly beautiful surroundings and then there is Markham which reminds me the most of a classic Italian city state such as Florence. The others just sound average to me.
Also, Illuminati? ![]()
