Considering how far technological advancement, particularly in physics, has come in the past 100 years I don't think it's unreasonable to expect we will have terraforming technology in "just" a few centuries. Which is why it's important we actually fund NASA. Assuming we make it that long.
Terraforming mars would be (comparatively) simple as opposed to Europa. Particularly because Europa is constantly being bombarded by ionizing radiation from Jupiter. If there is life in it's subsurface ocean's it's only because the thick outer ice sheet acts as a barrier. Adding an artificial sun or the planet moving into the habitable zone and melting the ice sheets could potentially sterilize it. We'd have to perfect something to shield it or live under water, under miles of ice.
Earth will be very uncomfortable for human survival due to the Sun alone (not accounting at all for resource depletion, climate change, etc) in about 1.1 billion years, so we're going to have to have it done before that. Again, assuming we make it, and the rate of technological advancement/computing power continues to exponentially increase will most certainly have colonized the nearby star systems long before then.
Shepards of the galaxy, NASA needs your help!

1.1 billion years! lol
Humankind at its current form hasn't been around more than 50000 years ago. And every 100 years there is one or two geniuses that can solve many questions or technological difficulties; like Einstein and Tesla. So there is nothing to worry about.

Maybe we'll have downloaded ourselves into radiation-proof bodies by then.

I'm Derek Hollan and this is my favourite job on the citadel.
Cheers!
I'm glad you like it, but I hope you don't get any ideas about leaving Bioware! ![]()
