Playing devil's advocate....

Hawke isn't a noble family. And we don't become heirs to the Amell estate until much later.

You were STILL the oldest in the family  :P I'm going to enjoy being the youngest and telling my older siblings to stuff it like my IRL brothers and sisters tell me............ being the oldest sucks

Lol, true. No-one respects the eldest. (Until you inherit the title and kick those little whipper-snappers out of the keep, muhahaha.....

why are we always the youngest child in these noble houses for once I like to be the eldest

there bsn I contributed my nitpick for the week good day

The eldest presumably inherits the titles and such.  Too much responsibility to go wandering around the countryside slaying demons.

And if you're going human mage I think you lose the rights to your Title and inherits or am I wrong?

Well, yeah.  But then it doesn't really matter where they fall in the sibling line ;)

The protagonist will have relatives there, but are you sure we will be able to see them?

People know that we won't have playable origins as in DA:O, but I think some keep thinking there will be some kind of playable prologue before the explosion despite having no confirmation from Bioware. Ok, there's also no confirmation on the contrary, but I think that not getting our hopes up is for the best. A good surprise is better than disappointment.

To make a comparison, I think some are expecting a ME prologue. Shepard could take a walk, speak to the crew, and then have a lengthy conversatgion with the captain before the action started. However, my bet is that we'll have a ME2 prologue, with some cutscene introducing the setting before everything goes to hell and then, yes, the protagonist trying to survive.

Mm, I'm definitely expecting a prologue where we have a chance to interact at least a bit.  In ME2 Shepard as a protagonist and his relationship/history with the crew were already established.  Inquisitor is a fresh protagonist and I feel it'd be a wasted opportunity to not allow at least some interaction at such an important time in not only this story, but DA history.

It could go either way of course but I'd sure be both surprised and disappointed if we just got some short introduction then "BOOM EXPLOSION!"

The Human backstory especially - it'd be lame to be there with your family and not even have a chance to speak before they get blown to hades.

Come down to how they are modeling the soicities, the eldest gets the titles and is expected to learn everything and how to run  things. Also if somneone would move against the noble family they would strick the eldest first, the spare second and the youngest last given how Starkhaven worked from exhiled prince and how most noble families irl use to work.

The youngest would have little pressure on them otbher then being sent to certian things and expected to help more imporant family members and so on. Basically your the expandable child when youngest and noble in most cases.

Most likely its just before the circle wanted its freedom and still in a family that is devout to the chantry it wouldn't matter if they where the youngest or not. Magic exist to serve man and all that.

So mages don't get titles and land still un;ess they are from a certian country or are a special case. Hopefully some of this stuff gets resolve fully in DA:I

But that had nothing to do with their order of birth, just on whether they could use magic or not.

Using an Earl as an example, the first born son inherits the title. 2nd and 3rd sons use the prefix The Honourable, which gets abbreviated to Hon.

A completely separate issue, as the Hero of Ferelden isn't inheriting any title. He gains a new title through marriage.

Some of my Headcanons about Ostwick:

  • Ostwick was conquered by the Qunari in 7:56 Storm and retaken at the end of the Third New Exhaled March in 7:84 Storm.
  • The city and surrounding area are set up similarly like Clocktown and Termina from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.
    • There's a giant clocktower/lighthouse in the center of the city built by the Qunari during their occupation. When Ostwick was taken back there were people converted back whose duty was to maintain the tower. So it still stands and works today. It rings on set intervals and the lighthouse is set into motion at around sunset. It uses fire so volunteer mages for the Circle come in to light it and keep it lit until sunrise.
    • North of the City are the Vimmark Mountains. During the Qunari occupation, qamek poisoned workers mined the ore from the mountains and built aqueducts to direct the mountain springs. Today, the mines are operated by various mining companies and the aqueducts are kept maintained.
    • West of the City is the Planasene Forest. The city's lumber is provided from here as well as food from the Outer farmlands, owned and raised privately; be it humans living outside the walls or elvhes living in the Alienage by the West Gate.
    • East of the City is the Coastline and the Stone Wharf which was, again, built by the Qunari during their occupation. Stone houses carved into the cliffs can still be seen along with the additions made over the years. It sees a lot of traffic from the coastal Marcher Cities and Fereldan. The Stone Wharf has also been called "Little Ferelda" since you can see a lot of Fereldan influence on the housing and people, especially since the influx of refugees escaping the Blight.
    • South of the City is a canyon home to the ruins of an unnamed Ancient Kingdom. The ruins appear to be older than even Ancient Tevinter. Was it is a ancient Elvhen city forgotten by even the Dalish? Or another Civilization different from the Elvhes wiped out by the Ancient Magisters? Everyone seems to agree that whatever it was it has to hold some valuable treasure. Many attempts at funding an expedition has come up but has not panned out one way or another. There is a sense of dread that can be felt by anyone coming near the canyon. Even the Qunari, in their 28 year occupation, stayed away from them.
  • There's a North, South, East, and West District with Time Square being around the clocktower. Each is divided by the aqueducts brining water from the Vimmark Mountain Springs
  • The local Chantry is located North-West (inside the wall) and is a refurbished Tevinter Temple to the Old Gods
  • The Circle and Templar Barrack located South-East and was once a Viddathlok from the Qunari Occupation
  • There is a University in Ostwick to the North-East with great schools of Civil and Marine Engineering. Graduates from here make some of the finest walls, houses, fortresses, and ships in the world.
  • Though the Qunari were forced out their influence is still felt. People take great precedent in having 'expected' career paths but that is second only to merit. If you do your job well you will climb the social ladder.
  • Ostwick has a system similar to Fereldan's Landsmeet where the heads of the various Noble houses as well as elected representatives of the Alienage, Stone Warf, and the Merchant's Guild act as the Legislative Body with an elected Teyrn presiding everyone.
    • The current Teyrn is actually a Fereldan native whose family came before the Fifth Blight to seek better fortunes. He managed to work his way up using only his skills and wit to gain support from the majority of the Ostwick Landsmeet.

That's awfully detailed... and probably you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

For example, the Qunari did NOT conquer Ostwick. What the codex says is that the Qunari landed a great force near the city with the intention of capturing Kirkwall and Starkhaven to block the Exalted armies' supply routes. Ostwick's fate is detailed in World of Thedas, where it's stated that in 7:56 Starkhaven and Ostwick managed to hold the Qunari back, while Kirkwall fell. The only "Qunari influence" are the double walls in Ostwick, built because the inhabitants have become afraid of external attacks.

Now I realize that it makes Ostwick a city of badasses or a version of the siege of Malta; while everyone was occupied in the north, the Qunari land an invading force near you, a force that manages to conquer Kirkwall and threatens Starkhaven, the two most important cities in the Free Marches, and you still manage to resist. That's before having the famous double walls and while the Qunari had Estwatch as a launching point for their fleets. We must remember that Ostwick is a coastal city nearer the Amaranthine Ocean and more exposed than Kirkwall.

I'll take that as a compliment.

Oh, Oswtick wasn't conquered? I was going off from the wiki, which said that the Qunari launched their assault on Starkhaven and Kirkwall near Ostwick and I figured Ostwick was taken as well. Whoops  :pinched:. But it is still cool that Ostwick pushed back the Qunari. Gives me some new ideas...

But yeah, I know there is a good chance the game is going contradict what I've thought up. But I still think it's a little fun to do.

Actually, does World of Thedas have anything else on Ostwick?

I'm fully prepared for this to be crushed in-game but...

Notice, if you will, that it doesn't mention you being the youngest in the mage description. If they don't specify you as the youngest if you're a mage, I'm going to headcanon that there are two potential human protagonists and they're both from the same family. It provides good flavor for the backstory for me, if nothing else.

I might have to take this headcanon as well, so that in the Warrior/Rogue 'verse, the Mage Trevelyan either died before or at the peace summit, while in the Mage 'verse, the Warrior/Rogue Trevelyan died instead. Or if we find we don't have any siblings, then they could simply be cousins.

And in the Dragon Age Ultimate Universe, they both survived and gained powers.

I really don't like the idea of playing the youngest remember of the family. Again. But as long as I can pull off a 30+ year old without any conflict, I don't mind that much.

I just don't want my interpretation of the Inquisitor to be young and lacking in experience, especially when all of the companions and advisors (minus Sera, perhaps) are older folk, which is something I really like. The Inquisition is formed of older, wiser and more experienced people. I want that to include the Inquisitor.

Oh, yes, building the world-setting is fun :)  You had a lot of imagination with that description of Ostwick. The problem, as I've seen about the character backgrounds posted before the official backgrounds appear, is that people tend to put too much effort that then can go to waste. And then some blame the game instead of, you know, blame themselves for creating expectations that were never promised.

The wiki is known for jumping to assumptions easily. For example, there's another bit of information about Ostwick: according to World of Thedas, it's one of the most important cities in the Free Marches, together with Starkhaven and Kirkwall. Yet the wiki says that the three most important cities are Starkhaven, Kirkwall and Tantervale, not Ostwick.

Inquisitor: I hate this family always trying to make me join the chantry and be something I'm not

Father: Son you're forty years old and living in our guest room we just want you to get a job.

Inquisitor: NEVER!!

I believe the Tantervale part comes from a DA2 loading screen.

I believe the Tantervale part comes from a DA2 loading screen.

I'd want to see that loading screen. There's a distinct possibility that it might have been misinterpreted (it wouldn't be the first time, actually) or that the new source of lore retconned said piece of information.
