Also face tats are *really* unappealing to me personally. Bleh.

I wonder what the numbers for DEs are gonna look like.

Why can't you design a character that you don't find appealing.
Though this is excellent grounds for comedy with all the white guys playing white scruffy male protagonists.

Because I don't want to play a game for 40+ hours with a character I find unappealing? I mean if you want to more power to you but I have better ways to spend my time.

Then why don't you play a non-elf?
You don't want to play a Dalish, because Dalish have tattoos.
There are three other races, and at least the humans and dwarves aren't required to have tattoos (all the Qunari we've seen have had some, so who knows)

The vallaslin are as much a part of being Dalish as having pointy ears and living in the woods.

I might as well argue that I should be allowed to make my Dalish elf short and solid, with round ears and a resistance to lyrium. And if you don't let me play that way, it's not fair, because the PC is MINE and I should be able to play my Dalish elf however I want to, regardless of the established lore!

It's simple. The vallaslin are a universal trait of adult Dalish elves, just like pointy ears and thin frames. For DA:I, we have the option to play as an adult elf who was raised Dalish. If you don't want to be Dalish (and accept all the things that come with being Dalish), then play a different race. *shrug*

I decided months ago I was going to stick to humans and Qunari.

I am. I decided against playing elves the second only dalish was revealed. I'm just a bit hmm that tattoos aren't optional since they were in DAO.

As for X has Y so don't play X one could say the same about humans dropping Andrastian sayings (whether or not they believe in the maker or not such sayings would be a part of how they were raised). *shrug* Doesn't stop those complaints so I'm not sure why it'd stop the why can't dalish be tat free complaints.

Personally a fan of tattoos just not face tattoos, but I thought a few of the Dalish selections in Origins were pretty enough without feeling like an annoying distraction.

So I'm generally okay with it being mandatory. It's cool, really.

So what's wrong with Bioware improving thier games, shoring up lore-concistency?

Nothing?

I simply am on the side of player deciding whether their PC has tats on their face. Especially since BW doesn't even let you keep helmets on in conversations most of the time. Lore friendly or not I rather err on the side of the player and have the game assume there's some mark there.

Either way it doesn't matter the dalish require tats *shrug*

XD ty for being consistent.

Now I wonder if the battlecries are race based...humans get Andrastian lines, Dwarves get stone, Elves get creators and Qunari some Qunari cursing? That'd be awesome.

I think Qunari cursing might actually do damage...

I think this time around, they're trying to create a game and a world with more internal consistency. You could also play a blood mage in DAO and DA2, but noone reacted to you, and it wasn't believable. In DA:I, they seem to be making a better effort to stay consistent with the lore and also make all of your choices (in race, gender, class and specialization) things that the world and NPCs in it react to. Personally, I'd much rather my choices matter and lead to people in the game reacting appropriately to my PC, than just to be able to have no tattoos and have no one wonder or comment on that fact.

If you made a tattoo-less Dalish in DA:I, either it'd be the only part of your appearance/character that oddly never was commented on/reacted to, OR the writers would have to add in a bunch of new/different dialogue to explain why you were different than other Dalish. They'd have to rewrite scenes in which people recognized you as Dalish (because without tattoos, how would they know?), and encounters with other Dalish would have to be written differently, since, unless it was your clan, they wouldn't recognize you as Dalish right away either. Even encounters with your own clan would have to be written differently to match the believable reactivity of the rest of the game. If you went home, other Dalish would certainly treat you differently if you have vallaslin vs if you don't.

TL;DR, to make a tattoo-less Dalish work in this game would either take a LOT of extra work/writing/etc, or it would stick out like a sore thumb as the only part of character creation that doesn't fit into the realistic reactivity that they're working super hard to include this time around.

See I don't mind the latter. Cause honestly sure the tat can be there canonically as long as I don't have to see it on my character I wouldn't be bothered. XD But I'm probably not the norm so *shrug*

But ah well. I'm good as long as Qunari aren't forced to have tats. (The female Qunari tat makes me think of facial hair...do not want).

is complaining about dalish having tats like complaining  dwarfs are short? I'm all for player choice. but players have to own up to their choices.

you want to be dalish, well get your face tat. want to be a dwarf prepare to spend the game looking up at people. want to be human prepare to be... kinda boring :P

Not really? Since dalish aren't born with the tats. Dwarves are born short :P

I find humans more interesting than the dalish.

This was a great post. I certainly think you have a point about the developers trying to be more true to the lore of Dragon Age, with the exclusion of blood mage (due to being unable to provide accurate reaction to it in the storyline) and the presence of vallaslin for Dalish protagonists.

They could have competed when they were children and teenagers however, thus too young for the markings.

That is still irrelevant. A Keeper's duty is to be a keeper and protector of dalish lore, tradition and ritual. It would be pretty lore breaking to have the future Keeper shun those very traditions in which they were chosen to protect and keep sacred.

maybe, but since game tattoo's are basically face paint we're never going to see them.

though dalish like most "rebel" groups don't do dissidents. once again look at merrill or the way they disowned city elves. they probably at least  be questioned alot and  be mocked at best.

but vallaslin is part of what makes them dalish not city elves.

Some of them still have no shoes, like Solas sometimes.

I hope there's are armors without shoes for the Dalish Inquisitor.
