They're also confirmed to be mandatory for Elven Inquisitors

That's interesting, and it makes sense, since it's a rite of passage for the Dalish. As Gishrael wrote, "When the children of our people came of age, they earn the privilege of wearing the vallaslin, the blood writing. It sets us apart from the shemlen, and from the elves who have thrown their lot in with them. It reminds us that we will never again surrender our traditions and beliefs."

I hope that they reveal which vallaslin design corresponds with which Creator, so that we can choose a specific vallaslin that best represents who our elven Inquisitor is.

It's not official, I suppose, but this is a good resource for the tattoos and their meanings: http://www.glitterdu...vallaslin-lore/

I do wonder how a "rebel" would be handled. Would they be expected to leave the clan? Surely if you're 30 and have no vallaslin you wouldn't be considered for such a task like being First or spying on an important gathering. They'd want someone that's considered an adult, and if you refuse to do it, does that mean you'll be considered a child yet? If you felt that strongly about being "different" from other Dalish, probably would have left on your own anyway before events occurred...? Hmm.

You'd be babied, treated as a child, not allowed to hunt or even allowed in any of the important decisions.  At some point they younger ones who did reach of age would probably mock them, telling them to go live with the humans, and stuff like that.  This is all opinion, not fact

I hope there is a huge selection of them both small and full face ones.

My dalish warden has/had the full one that is a soild tattoo on one side and the other half was more lines and such.

Was neat!

Why? If a player wants to be lore-friendly, he can give his character the tattoos.

What benefit is there in forcing everyone to do it?

And that's my last comment on the matter in the Twitter thread.

Moved it to the vallaslin thread  :D

To answer your question: personally, I think that it makes the player character feel like an actual entity in this game world (rather than a bunch of pixels representing the player's fantasy).

Are they? When did it happen? Damn, it seems that I keep missing new information today no matter where I read.

Still, good to know.

It's one of the thing I missed in World of Thedas. Maybe in volume 2?

I'm just gonna put on the one that looks the coolest and role with it if I play an elf.

Perhaps, but that's coming out next year, so I hope we get some information before then (for roleplaying purposes, as I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to choose accurate vallaslin for their Dalish elf).

Not sure if it's been said already but a Dalish elf needs a vallaslin to be recognized as Dalish. I assume other Dalish in the world will recognise us like in previous games as well as elves in general and even other characters may.

The city elves sort of fear and revere the Dalish so I assume the sight a Dalish Inquisitor will have an impact on them in the game and that would make no sense without a vallaslin.

It seems they have changed the Vallaslin...maybe they added some .

I'm not sure the new one are related to Dalish gods.

I guess Matt Rhodes would know , possible it's going to end up in the artbook?

In a stunning twist nobody expected, the Dalish have rediscovered a bunch of Old Gods they hadn't known about before. They quickly devise new vallasin to honor them.

I hope so. If I had to choose depending on meaning, and taking the backstory into account, I would say:

-Mythal. After all, the Inquisitor will be also 'the Great Protector' of Thedas.

-Falon'Din. That journey into the Fade needs a guide, and who is better than him?

-Dirthamen. The Keeper of Secrets should be the patron deity of a spy and an Inquisitor uncovering the conspiracy.

However, in the end I'm sure I will choose the one that looks cooler :P

If there's something easy to justify is changes in tattoos. It's one of those things that could and should vary between clans. Time for some Free Marcher Dalish fashion!

the Tattoos do signify a particular deity but that doesn't mean every clan uses the same designs or that there aren't several designs used for the same god within a single clan.

Velanna and Serani's vallaslin was a design we had not seen before.

I do hope the old designs are available though and I hope there is something that tells us the meaning of each design.

I know.

But seeing the tatoo on the female Inquisitor below, I'm not sure the future new tatoos are going to represent Dalish gods.

It's possible the new one just looks Dalish and cool .

Spoiler
  I like this one better

Found the tweet...

@ Hrungr

If it isn't troublesome to ask, would it be possible to Tweet the devs if Dalish tattoo options in CC will note the particular god they are associated with?  If not it is no problem at all...and thank you for all your work keeping up with these tweets, Hrungr :)

Mike Laidlaw @Mike_Laidlaw

No, they will not. Good idea, but no room in the UI.

Feh I don't like the forced tatoo thing but it makes sense.

Hopefully there are small inconspicuous ones.

If not, then the glitterdust list is probably good enough, assuming the new ones at least resemble the ones from DA:O.  I'll probably choose whichever one looks closest to the vallaslin of June, but if the changes are too great, I may be forced to commit blasphemy and represent a different Creator.

They could just do a blog post but I guess that would involve showing them all before the game launches which they may not wish to do. I still hope they do though.

The Dalish we've seen so far have been from Ferelden so I suppose changes could be put down to being a regional thing like the differences between DAO and DA2's Chantry robes and templar armour but I really hope BW provide some sort of guide especially as they're mandatory this time.

Merrill's DA2 Vallaslin is also unique, even though it takes some sort of guidance from her old Origins Vallaslin (which represents Falon'Din).
