I already gave you a reason. Because you blend in better. Not just in appearance, but also in personality since with your beliefs less set in stone than an 'adult', you can pass off as one easier in that way as well.

Now you give me a good reason why they couldn't make it just an option?

It's pretty obvious at this point that the writers want to tell a specific story for each race.

It seems that an adult elf was needed for the elven story they wanted to tell. As for the main story, I doubt that they would just ignore the point that you have brought up ("blending in" with other elves).

You are ignoring the fact that the vallaslin was probably given long before the Keeper ever came up with the idea of spying on the humans... well whatever.  I'm only trying to help you get used to the idea, but if you can't or won't then so be it.

Does this mean you'll be playing as a human instead?  Some other race, perhaps?

(edit: typo...)

I'm not ignoring the fact. The Inquisitor can be 20, so just a couple years behind the norm on it, when the spy is needed.

I really don't know which race I'll play as anymore. None of the backstories fit my plans.

Mike Laidlaw mentioned it on twitter.

Yeah, ran across it after I posted.

Could I find it before I posted? No. Course not. That'd be too easy.

Starting to feel a bit like one of the only people that quite likes the dalish tattoos. Hey ho~

So long as they have a good forehead only one, then I'm set. Not a fan of whole face tattoos.

I'll be playing a mage. As an apprentice to the Keeper, I can't imagine him wanting to ignore any of the dalish traditions so I was going to give him a tattoo anyways.
Dude is going to stick out like a sore thumb on his spy mission. I look forward to seeing how that works.

You essentially set yourself up for disappointment, I'm afraid.

  I see... well, I hope you come up with something interesting by November... that's a lot of time to think it over.

I'm not sure how you got that. The backgrounds are pretty broad.

I mean, you've got a merc, a gangster, a noble, and a Dalish (which we've known about for months, by the way). That's extremely vague.

In DA2, we were more restricted in our character options because they had a pretty specific story they wanted to tell about Hawke and the Amell family. In Origins, it was a lot more loose and you could headcanon quite a lot without contradicting the game at the expense of a deeper connection/more compelling plot line for your character. In my opinion.

It appears that in Inquisition we're getting a middle ground between the two. We get a lot more choice in who we are, but there are boundaries and those boundaries are more prominent than in Origins. That said, it sounds like there will be a lot of in-depth content focused on who we are and reactions to our backgrounds. So it can't be limitless. The requirement of Vallaslin helps guide us towards the idea that we are probably loyal to our Dalish clan and grew up with those teachings. You can probably start to break away from that via choices you make almost as soon as the game starts, if you want to (you could easily think of it as being that as soon as your Dalish character is exposed to the outside world, they start to think the old ways are bunk, or however you'd like to think of it).

I am in favor of this approach. I prefer the ability to make a stronger, more specific story, but I like to have as much choice within that as I can. It is a delicate balance, for sure. I'm very much looking forward to the experience.

I personally like the tattoos and I'll feel more connected to the back story. I hope there are new designs, however, and I would like for some descriptions of which designs refer to which gods/goddesses somewhere, even if it isn't in-game.

Given we have had a brightness level for tattoos in the past it seems likely that will still be true, so don't like them for visual reasons - slide it all the way down as pale as you can go and you are set.

Personally I like it, given all my rogue play throughs are female, tanned and blonde it will give a good visual difference between my warden (city elf no tats) to my quizzy (dalish elf with tats)

Hmm, I don't see why people say Dalish can't blend in at the conclave. We've seen city elves with vallaslin (as in elves who left the Dalish) and humans were just fine with them. As long as your PC manages to act like a city elf, they'll look like a city elf who used to be in a Dalish clan. Not to mention Zevran has regular tattoos and I suspect many humans wouldn't know the difference.

I agree. The vallaslin shopuldn't represent any problem. The problem is the second part, a Dalish being able to act like a City Elf. Of course, with so many people there, they might have a chance not to run intro trouble.

I would be more worried about their clothes, actually.

What about their clothes would be worrisome?

Something that looks like rags should work.  Elves would only stick out if they show up in a fancy outfit.

If you can still determine the color of the tat, maybe you can get it as close as possible to your Quizzy's skin tone and set the visibilty as low as possible. Probably as close to invisible as you can get, and might actually be a cool visual.

Otherwise...don't start building your character until you know what your parameters are.

Exactly. Imagine if Bioware presents us a Dalish that can act like a City Elf, has his or her tattoos well hidden... but then wears an armor like a Human Warrior or has a staff like a mage.

Exactly.

And even so some dalish clans engage in trades with humans, so it isn't too far-fetched that a dalish may pass unnoticed even with the tatoos. I imagine such a gathering would attract many merchants/traders in the areas, so the guards would expect some dalish elves/dwarves showing up.

Not that I expect the guards to let you go near the chantry and mage officials mind you, but that may hold true for every background.

Note to self, don't ride into the enclave on a halla.

Coming close to the Divine, pretending to ask for an autograph : bad plan!

Not a fan of this mainly because they look hideous. I haven't seen the options for DA:I, obviously, but past dalish tats obscured the face to such a degree that I had a hard time empathizing with them. They may as well have had no face at all. City elves, on the other hand, I quite liked, because they didn't have all that grunge all over their faces.

Lore accuracy is great and all, but hopefully something 'small and feint' is not an overstatement.

I'm not a big facial tattoo fan. The mild disappointment that my elf will be required to have tattoos is tempered knowing it makes more lore sense than not.

Boohoo? You barely knew anything about the game and yet you managed to lay out plans so detailed that they were completely shattered by 4 fairly vague backgrounds... I don't think the problem is on Bioware's end.

Tanned male rogue, long black hair. Really wants to punch the stupid people.
This is all my first-play-through characters ever.
