I frequent the forums quite a bit and while I don't read every thread, I've never come across anyone being discriminatory against someone who is conventually attractive.

Of course I'm not sure what is meant by conventually attractive, do you mean like film attractive where all the women are blonde and perfect and then men are muscular? T.V. attractive? advertisement attractive?

or do you mean people who can considered generally attractive by a society?

That could be any number of looks including  Vivienne, I know a number of people who have similar facial structure that I would consider to be very attractive.

From what I've read, people seem to nosedive into criticizing models.

I think it's mainly the lack of hair on the females. Is Bioware afraid of long hair or something?

That's my problem, the choppy cuts. What's wrong with a nice sleek bun or braid or simply flowing with some bangs?

Thanks CaptivatingKS.  :D

@Pevesh, he was trying to give reasoning. He said he doesn't mind their styles of hair, which is what me and him was discussing. ;)

I wasn't necessarily referring to him specifically being upset about the LIs, more pointing out that it seems to be a be silly to point out people who are hurt by all the complaints about ugly companions making it all about themselves. :P Unless, I'm still totally not following, in which case, my apologies in advance. Thanks for the clarification, as well.

The only posts I've seen referencing models are saying that people shouldn't criticize a characters looks because they aren't 'model good looks'

Of course just because I haven't read it doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Overwhelming though the criticism seem to have been against the LIs because apparently they aren't pretty enough.

From what I've read, I've seen people nosedive straight into "these characters are all uggos" or some equivalent.  I see *way* more "why is character X so ugly."  I have seen a handful of "I think Character Y is too pretty" but usually in the context of "I am jealous that that character will look better than my PC" (which is an implicit statement of requiring a character, in this case the PC, to be very attractive in order to be valued).

I sadly admit to falling into the wanting to be more attractive crowd.  :(

It's okay, I do too. As long as you don't treat characters as lesser for not having your ideal looks, I don't think there's an issue with having a preference.

I wonder if it's some sort of poster girl effect...?

I mean before we had Morrigan and Isabela shown as the main female LI , and they were both ..."inviting"?

Now Cassandra in the trailers etc ..well she's shown in full armor , with a frowny face , and threatening the pc?

Maybe Cassandra face is not the real problem?

O meant wanting my character to be more attractive than the others actually.  I want my character be a goddess of skill and beauty, unsurpassed and eventually idolized and adored by her companions and the world for her awe inspiring magnificence.

(psst: That's probably at least a teensy bit of an exaggeration)

On another level though, it tends to bother me a bit when I fall short of the character model I desire as well as hair types/lengths I enjoy, because I struggle daily to be and fight to be my true self, and the struggle to be where I want to be but unable to quite get there due to limitations of my birth, and the frustration at the limitation is a very familiar feeling.  Is why I spend so long on a character, because I need to feel comfortable in her skin.

I totally get that. I want my character to be desired by every NPC she comes across. But I won't be mad at my party for being her level of gorgeous, haha.

Neither will I.  I'm only jealous like that when the NPCs get better armor and clothing options, as well as the ability to have a different body type than myself that I find more desirable for my own avatar.

Actually - that's the thing. There are a LOT of posts about how much people think the companions are ugly. And that overwhelming criticism causes this backlash of beauty shaming. It's a vicious cycle - a hodge podge of: "I hate ugly people..." enticing responses such as, "Well I hate pretty people..." (Not verbatim. I'm simplifying everyone's words.) It becomes this proverbial, "clusterf*cky" hate-sandwich. You know?

Both parties are wrong - meaning in a moral sense. They are insulting everyone under the sun - conventionally attractive or not, going on these tirades as they disparage the physical body/face types of real people.

"I hate moles."

"I hate white teeth."

"I hate clean skin."

"I hate scars."

"I hate fat people."

"I hate skinny people."

"I hate blonds."

Then it gets even more insulting...

"I hate models."

"I hate minorities."

"I hate femininity/masculinity."

These are all simplified opinions, but opinions that have been expressed nonetheless.

After all is said and done, we are sitting around hating on - everyone! Maybe the BSN needs more self respect, so that we can show others respect?

I can only speak for myself, but... IMO, ALL of the companions are attractive. Love Cassandra's badass look, Sera's adorable haircut, Dorian's charming voice, Solas's lithe body type... I don't see anything worth complaining about.

I think you are over simplifying what people have been saying. When someone complains about the 'ugliness' of a character, the type of response I've typically seen is ''I'll take a great personality and average looks over bad personality and great looks''. Does that mean the person hates beauty? Of course not. It just means that personality is more important than looks. Is that person implying that beautiful people have bad personalities? Of course not. Making personality the more important factor is not being shallow or discriminating against pretty people. Who a person is is more important than how he/she looks.

About the minority thing, I haven't seen bashing so much as discussing whether or not it was racist not to be attracted to certain skin tones/races (this being a fantasy RPG and all). Saying ''I'm not attracted to elves/Qunari/whatever'' is a far cry from saying ''I hate them''.

Sure, there have been a few people saying offensive things and debates sometimes get heated, but they are not the majority.

There definitely are attractive companions, but I do feel straight FemQuisitors get the short hand of the stick (romance-wise).

I meant in terms of DA:O design. I loved the bun with tendrils around my cheeks. I wasn't referring to hair down to my characters ass. :P

I had a dwarf girl with tendril down her cheeks.  Spent hours getting her just right.  She was perfect and adorable.  I was so happy with how she turned out.   Then I played the game and it clipped into her forehead and cheeks randomly during some cut scenes.  It drove me nuts and I had to abandon her. :(  One of the best faces I ever did. :(

The only one who's hair I think looks ugly is Sera's.  And that has an explanation based on her personality.

But for the LI's in general (at least the ones that have been revealed so far), I'm fine with their appearance.  They're not impossibly unrealistic, movie-star beautiful, but they look like...people.  Attractive people.

I also find it refreshing that they appear to be wearing ordinary functional outfits that reflect their characters, rather than the rather stripperiffic outfits we've seen in the past.

You telling me the stripperiffic outfit Isabella wore didn't reflect her character?

Not entirely, no.

Just as she wasn't wearing an entire outfit :P

As in RL, many are better revealed under better lights; shall wait before passing judgment on appearances.

That said, actions, language, character, etc are also sources of attraction, and a few are winning or losing this battle thru the many demo's and vids seen thus far for me.
