Let's see, Cassandra went from this in DA2^^

Cass_head.jpg

To THIS^^

Like WTF happened between DA2 and DAI?!!

It's like what I said on a similar thread: It's like "LIFE" hit her in the face with a pipe.

This isn't a fair comparison. Both pics must come from the game. How about this :

dragon_age_inquisition_cassandra-pc-game

Yup. Between the cartoonish and generic character above with her weird smooth face ( the only thing noticeable is her eyes ) and my pic, I'm gonna take that attractive and distinctive woman who looks like a realistic character. Cassandra in DAII was interesting thanks to her strong personality, otherwise she was totally forgettable in my eyes. Now just look in this pic at the nose, the cheeks, the jaw, the lips, the ears, the eyes, her facial structure, the hair.  How can you not see the improvement ? DAII Cassandra can't stand a chance against her in my opinion.  :P

Also Josephine and Vivienne and Sera are gorgeous. We, people who are interested into the female characters are lucky ! ( Subjective opinion is a beautiful thing lol. )

@Sylvianus: Actually... that looks more like her. I mightve been wrong >.< I cant believe how much a different camera angle can change things up. Now that I think about it, the reason I might consider Varric/Morrigan/Leliana true to their appearance and Cassandra not - could be that I simply never got to view Cassandra 360 degrees ingame as much as the other characters. Lightning + lack of camera angle view could actually explain alot.

I'll admit to not finding a lot of them attractive in the typical sense. But then again, my favourite Bioware romance so far is Garrus from Mass Effect. Dude was scaly and had no lips.

But that character? Amazing. Didn't care that he didn't have the sexy pecks of Kaiden, because he was way more fun to be with.

That is what I am most looking forward to with the inquisition line up. They seem like such an interesting bunch and I can't wait to get to know them all in both friendship and romantic variations. I think this is the first time I've wanted to romance them all  :o Can't wait to find out who the other two are (C'mon Solas!)

Although, it has to said that Josephine and Dorian = Pwhoar.

I still can't understand how people look at the old, plain Cassandra face and say that it looks better than her new, more realistic one. Look at that picture Sylvianus posted. She actually has defining features now. Her nose, her cheeks, the shine on her lips, and yeah -- even that awesome scar. They all changed for the better.  One of the reasons I'm so excited about this game is because now more than ever characters look different from each-other. They don't all nearly have the same noses, eyes, skin complexion, ect. If you really can't handle how the women who are members of the Inquisition are fighters and not the 'pretty' girls you see walking down your streets everyday, I dunno what to tell you. Go play persona, anime girls are usually perfect. All the more pretty, shiny new graphics for me to enjoy.

I realize that the characters are supposed to be older, more rough and that theres a new engine and all. But it seems to me the devs beat Cassandra with the ugly stick just for the sake of it. I know Bioware wants to take a stand against female characters being depicted overly sexualized and objectified, but imo they took it too far. As if they wanted to make an example out of it and went the whole distance and more.

There's dev blog that covers designing Cassandra's new appearance -- it boils down to switching from "design the character to be pretty" to "design the character so the looks reflect the personality". Which imo isn't really an improvement (as it basically just promotes different set of stereotypes vs making characters that'd be actual people) but there you have it, there was some actual reasoning behind the changes, not "for the sake of it".

I don't understand that either, DA2 Cassandra looked like a mannequin, DAI Cassandra looks actually human, the redesign makes her look better imo.

Cassandra was pretty enough in DA2, but she could have been any other character if it wasn't for her personality and attitude making her stand out. in DA:I she looks exactly like what she is: an older (not old) combat veteran from a noble house. I think that's more what could be taken from it being said that her looks fit her personality.

I do admit it can be hard getting a good idea of companion appearances because depending on the picture, position, and lighting they all look different. I'd suggest not hinging your opinion on looks until we can see them in game. It'll probably be different. Not that I believe it matters, because I think they all look awesome for not being perfect.

Not sure if the OP is drunk or suffering from a head injury, Cassandra is an inch from being perfect, also Sera looks nice too and there is nothing wrong with Josy either.

So... I was looking at the romances/companions for DA:I and am i the only one that thinks that these romances aren't all that attractive?  Well I guess the male companions / romances are actually not that bad. But the female romances? Come on BioWare. Cassandra looked perfectly fine in DA:2 and now... Am i the only one thinking this? Like why is it that hard to give us an attractive female to romance?

i would say that i do not like any romance what devs give to male Inquisitor and especially do not like that male elven, kossith and dwarven Inquisitor have no one to romance

we do not have females who is non shems and not a pro Orlais/Olrais Chantry/Templars

the only nonshem female in the party a lesbian and yeah i planned to romance sera but yeah i do not say that she was beatifull

her face its like face of the joffry baraeton from game of thrones

even her ears and nose if you can see was broken

and she is wearing some beggar clothes what as i can understand still will look like beggar clothes because this is her style s no matter what i will give for her

and i still was planned to romance her because she is not a shem and she is not a pro Orlais/Orlais Chantry/Templars

so i lefted with 1 female friend

I had missed this dev blog completely, do you have a link? Also, that was all Ive been wanting this time when it comes to her appearance change - an official and logical explanation. Though Im slightly confused by this, because that is like saying "Her personality doesent fit being beautiful".

I wish we could strike the phrase "Beat with the ugly stick" from our collective vocabulary. It's so darned RUDE. :/

Her personality doesn't fit the sort of time and effort it would take to maintain makeup, lipstick, eyeliner, blush, and dodge any unpleasent blows to the face while fighting.

People prefer DA2 Cassandra because of a number of reasons. The detail of her new model has little to do with.

DA2 model had everything it needed because it matched her personality from the glimpses we had through her scenes. It's one of the easiest characters to use imagination to fill the gaps, anyone can relate to what she does, understands her impatience with Varric. She is intriguing cause she can switch from pragmatic to romantic attitude seamlessly. Also her sounding naive at times with that accent is a killer.

DAI Cassandra changed that. Turned from Inquisitive and sharp to blunt and aggressive and her features further reinforce this. She seems like a glorified grunt that likes speeches and declarations. That's imo why most of the people who liked her in DA2 don't like her in DAI. She feels different. Of course we don't know how she will turn out to be in game but that's irrelevant to the point. I don't care much for her anymore and since her appearance is too rough for my tastes there isn't really any redeeming quality.

I think they butchered her. I hope I'm just wrong and in game she is better but I don't really believe it.

For other companions I like Vivienne so far and I think Josephine will be great as well. I don't care much for Sera. But well, 2/4 is perfectly fine if it turns out the way I think it will.

Cassandra is hot.

Cassandra is HOT.

That's my contribution to the Cassandra discussion

disclaimer: I find all the women companions especially attractive. Vivienne especially.

As for the male companions Varric, Dorian , Solas and Blackwall are all very attractive to me.

I couldn't find where it was posted on BioWare site, but this is link to the original article: http://theworkofcasp...eauty_2687.html

the key part is this:

In the above example of Cassandra. Her hook is her power and authority. So then the trick was merely to use visual language to tell that story. I no longer had to justify what I thought was attractive. Her face became all about her aggression. Through the angle of her facial structure to the angle of her ears. It all became about giving her a strong aggressive forward visual flow.

Rather than picking this nose and that mouth, I started designing her feeling not her beauty. I wish in some little way I could take credit for this type of approach but the simple truth is that Disney artists have been using this for years. From pointy witches to round comical dwarfs.

Beauty != attractiveness. Personally, I tend to find men who are conventionally "beautiful" UNattractive. I like guys with personality and wits who aren't afraid to dive into a project and get messed up, filthy, bug-eaten and cut up. I like to see some wrinkles and scars on a man. Fake tanner, moisturizer, hair gel, teeth whitening and the kind of cut abs you only get from practically living at the gym? No THANK you. They might be pretty to look at but I don't want one in my house.

Alright, I need to step in and say something.

First off, I have zero issues with the companions of either gender. At worst, Iron Bull is the god awful ugliest nonhuman I've ever seen, but that was the point, wasn't it? If that pleases some players - awesome. Have fun with the Bull. ;)

But anyway....here is my point:

A lot of people have been "beauty shaming" and it's getting downright insulting. What if there was a fat human female character and everyone started complaining about "the fat/obese b*tch I don't want in my house..."? Wouldn't some of you be personally offended? There are obviously men and women here who come in all sizes.

Well....guess what....

Some of us are "conventionally attractive" and have even worked modeling jobs. We play video games too. We read the forums too.

And just because we do have attractive features on a conventional level doesn't mean we:

- don't have a personality
- are unintelligent
- are mean spirited
- hate "ugly people" (whatever that means)
- aren't worth being in a relationship with

I mean really. If this was reversed and people were hating on folks that weighed too little or too much....the BSN would explode with butthurt.

Dude... Gal... whatever.

Calm down.

No one is "Beauty Shaming", whatever that means.

They just say, they prefer the more detailed and unique feeling that Cassandra's Looks have in DA2 to the rather bland Look she had in DA2.

The Way you phrase your unneeded Attack on whoever might have offended you, let's you additionally come across as rather arrogant, even though that might not have been your Intention.

Actually I find the male companions a lot more "ugly" and diverse. The female characters have a lot of soft sides, even Cassandra.

You have Varric, short and fat guy, Iron Bull a big bulky guy, Solas a more slim guy and ok, Cullen the typical bro, Dorian the more beautiful, Blackwall the old guy... etc I actually think they need to go further on the female companions, they are all human and elves with high cheek bones and slim or average body types. Even the female qunari PC is a way less bulky.

What if a want a bulky or larger female PC? where are my option? to me bioware is still to set onto female standards of beauty. That is why we have the spaghetti arms, even if they look ridiculous on FemShep.

her new look isn't that bad, it's been 10yrs since DA2 so she's now nearing or in her 40's so in a way "life" did indeed hit her in the face.. i mostly just take issue with the shape/placement of her eyes, cheekbones, and jaw.

If you think the dudebros complaining about the women not being pretty enough is annoying now, imagine how much they would flip out in that case... but yeah, I agree with you. All the females, despite looking more unique and realistic this time, are all still fitting into the standard pretty. I would have loved a female dwarven romance. Maybe one day.
