HI ALL...

as you all know the debate over the existence of aliens has been raging for centuries if not more, but as science advances we seem closer and closer to actually answering that question.

logic would say that since we have more planets than we can actually count ...EVER... the chances of AT LEAST.. finding earth like planets would be pretty damn high, in fact ... mathematically speaking... there would be trillions upon trillions of earth like planets scattered all over the place because the universe likes patterns and earth (like it or not) is just another pattern.... a hard pattern but its not so insanely unique to think its the only type M class planet out there.

Even so life might actually not require an earth like planet to exist in the first place, even complex life can find homes anywhere as long as they can find liquid water (as far as we know) so the chances are even bigger....

now why haven't we met anyone yet !!

the list of reasons:

1-we are alone.... this insanely vast universe (multiverse) is completely and utterly empty... even if we could travel at insanely fast speeds BILLIONS of time faster than light we would never ever ever ever hope to explore/see even 1% of it even if out culture remains for billions of years we would only manage to explore even LESS than 1% of existence....

this would seem illogical since EVEN with a "divine" plan creating so much "space" would be a waste of energy... in fact whether your a scientist or a theologists... an empty universe seems kinda moronic and redundant

2-we already met the "aliens" in fact hundreds of alien cultures have visited earth, but for some reason they only meet men in black and chose to respect the wishes of out collective governments to not reveal themselves to the public for some illogical reason...

personally I find this INSULTING to my intelligence, even the best government on earth cant keep its own crap hidden from the public, corruption, theft ..to name a few, and now some people want to convince me that they have kept first contact a secret for decades, I don't think so.

NOW if aliens ARE exploring the solar system or not is up for debate, if they are that advanced in space travel tech I would imagine they would observe and study BEFORE doing something stupid like contaminating our cultural growth with super technology (which we will abuse)  and risk spreading the human PLAGUE across the stars

3-We are unlucky, there are zillions of alien cultures all around us BUT since we only invented the radio a 100+ years ago our assistance is yet to be noticed by anyone, even the random exploration probes and scouts missed us for some reason.

We are on the far edge of the galaxy and this would make this theory more likely, earth is far from the more densely populated center of the galaxy, its poor in resources its hidden behind countless dust/gas nebulae and who knows how many black holes pulsars are in the way that would probably jam our primitive transmissions beyond all recognition.

4-We are so primitive everyone ignores us, even our primitive communications tech is so archaic no one bothers to invent something to pick up our transmissions, we just pose no threat/profit/interest to anyone

5-We are a reserve/experiment planet and no one is allowed to interfere with us, we are being studied OR were "made" to be studied by extremely advanced cultures for some reason

6-We are on the VERGE of meeting someone, in the next 10 to 100 years we WILL make first contact with another culture, the ORB of our presence is expanding into the galaxy and with each passing moment the chance that some one will pick up our transmissions is growing at a geometric rate, if that culture is WAY more advanced than us then they might see it as an opportunity to add us to their "empire" thus gaining a new work force a new market and an eager population that are willing to do anything to improve our place in the galaxy

what do YOU think :D

this looks like our galaxy btw cause we cant see ours :P duh

I say number 3. The universe is huge, so the chance of missing our radio signals in the regular radiation of the universe is very high. Not to mention travel distances.

I thought this was about either Star Trek First Contact.

Or the Next Generation episode First Contact. I'm slightly disappointed.

Also 3 is the most likely. Unless you do believe in Ancient Aliens, then it's 2 or 5.

Though going back to Star Trek, 4 was the reason.

Dan Aykroyd knows why we haven't met any aliens, let him explain.

u know he is gonna blow something up with it

If the Ancient Alien theories are right then it's all the Aliens fault we turned out like this.

What a bunch of jerks! They could've specified the whole "No killing other people" thing when being set up as gods. Especially the Aztec bros. That heart thing was messed up!

Aliens think we are all primitive beasts that kill each other.

Well the Aliens seemed pretty busy causing global catastrophe's, so maybe we are all just one giant lab experiment.

Well who is to say we haven't heard something from an alien civilization? The WOW signal is a good example we may get something but not sure what it looks like. One thing we have to remember, space is vast, hugely vast. I nearest neighbor is 4.5 lights years away there about, with the fastest rocket we could possibly build right now your still looking at over 100 years before we reach it. Even if you could travel the speed of light somehow that is still nearly 5 years of travel. Now the nearest Earth like planet I think is about 20 light years away. Yeah 500 years of travel on our best in theory propulsion that we can build. Even if aliens invent FTL travel, if they can go 100 times the speed of light they could be 1000 light years away still looking at many years of travel to get here.

So 3 and 6 are the ones I would most agree with, like the OP pointed out our radio signals are only 80-90 lights years out, we would be lucky if a space faring race was that close. NASA thinks we are only decades away from finding alien life so if they feel confident in that I would think I would too.

What we're missing is the other species with which to make first contact.

Although really, I refuse to believe that we are the only ones in the universe but at the same time it is extremely unlikely for us to meet another species unless they're located relatively close to us in the grand scheme of things. Our overall scanning ability of the universe is pretty primitive and limited right now.

Another species may know about us if they're far more advanced than us but might either not care or possibly even have something like their own version of the prime directive that says not to interfere with developing civilizations.

Well, we could be lucky to have not met a species from another planet, just because they would be more advanced than us doesn't necessarily mean that they are all rainbows and sunshine. They could be hostile, we could be allergic to them or something they bring with them or they us, either of us might start a war due to a misunderstanding/accidental insult (waving to us could be the flipping someone off to them), there are just so many things that could go wrong.

On the off chance that they are friendly, the odds of whoever meets them doing the right thing are slim, I mean what if they land and someone freaks out and shoots one? What if they meet some government leader and that government foolishly tries to take their technology if/when they don't share it? There are awful/stupid people in this world and they could be the point of first contact between both groups...

If Aliens don't exist, Earth is the center of universe.

Nuff said.

This would assume that "aliens" would have enough advanced technology to travel throughout the universe with faster than light travel.

While possible, it is extremely unlikely that this is the case.

i think the problem is we're looking for life JUST LIKE US. But maybe life in the universe is mostly like the dinosaurs with giant sea and land creatures and low intellect. If you think about our history of the planet, it took an EXTINCTION EVENT to usher in the development of mammals and humanities rise in creation.

What if we're the odd ones out because of that one big thing?

In conclusion, lets all build a Jurassic Space Park.

personally I believe that alien cultures are ziping and zaping all around us, the WOW signal, the faster than light Hubble telescope light cluster (light sources that moved faster than light and the telescope happened to see them from "behind")...etc etc

the evidence is all around us, people just chose to ignore it cause its easier to think we are isolated and "safe"

our space tech is rly rly lagging behind, sure w have the warp ship on paper now and it IS possible to make but there is no incentive for humanity to take this big leap

I for one think that the minute we spot an inhabited planet or make actual first contact, humanity's focus will shift dramatically toward space expansion

and aside from the inevitable damage the various nut jobs will do when this happens (religious zealots, mass group suicides, general freaking out)man kind will see a SHARP decline in violence since everyone is busy racing to the stars

it will be a nice time to be alive that's for sure
