@azarhal: I believe the idea is that they are at the winter palace for peace talks - so that doesn't profit the enemy.
Hm, did the developers say anything about a bard performing at this party? The bard specialization would have had a chance to help with the dialogue instead of a crappy +5 attack buff.

Doesn't change that killing either Celene or Gaspar at a peace talk is only going to result in a winner to the civil war. What you want is kill someone of secondary important and blame it on the other group.

Think about it this way. Stopping the assassin is exactly what the enemy would want right? Meaning the Inquisitor might be playing right into the enemies hands with this one. If the assassin is stopped - then accusations can fly and the peace talks will be cancelled.
But - letting someone die on the hunch that the bad guy wants you to stop the assassin is a totally cruel thing to do.
