Pets in combat

Now that we've got two mabari, we're going to have to work out some combat rules. These are open to discussion, but I'm going to reserve the right to make a ruling if necessary. I don't anticipate that it will be, but I'm saying it now to avoid confusion or hurt feelings later on.

 

1. Your pet is not your character shape-shifted. You may direct his activities for the most part, but there may be times when I'll PM you to say that your pet has discovered something or is doing something that you did not necessarily anticipate. Because animals - even well-trained and devoted ones - are animals and occasionally do things their owners don't expect. This won't be a random thing, and it may never happen, but if it does, please understand that there's a reason (which will usually become apparent within moments).

 

2. You will roll your pet's combat die. I need links, just as I do for player characters.

 

3. Your mabari is intelligent, but only to a point. He will always defend you in combat unless you order him to attack someone else (and if you are in melee combat at the time, he may not always obey). Orders must be verbalized as a free action. If your character is incapable of speech, you cannot issue psychic commands. If you forget to post that you are ordering your pet to change targets, it didn't happen.

 

4. Your mabari is not capable of understanding ranged combat. He will not be able to trace the trajectory of a missile or spell back to its source unless it has a visible arc. There are no tracer arrows, but Flame Blast is easily visible.

 

5. Your mabari cannot choose a target attack site, so please refer to this table when rolling for attack location. You are responsible for writing out your pet's attack, just as you would write out your own.

 

6. Mabari get stunt points, but they are also subject to fumbles.

 

7. Mabari gain full benefit from healing actions, spells and poultices, but they cannot take a breather. Their owners may treat their pets' injuries, however. If only the owner or the pet is injured, the usual rules about breathers apply (5+constitution+level), but if both are injured, the owner may elect to divide his attention and divide the benefit. If the owner splits his attention between himself and the dog, both receive 60% of the benefit, rounded down. "Extra" from one may not be applied to the other. Sleeping heals both normally (10+constitution+level).

 

8. If your mabari drops to 0 health, he dies in 1+ constitution rounds. This is one round less than player characters. I debated allowing this at all, as mabari are technically NPCs and would usually be subject to the rules pertaining to NPCs who die the instant their health reaches 0, but it seemed fair to allow the mabari a chance to survive. (I still haven't decided what I'm going to do about the other NPC in the party.)

 

9. Mabari gain levels. I still need to work out the particulars, but unless there's some kind of level advancement, these guys are going to turn into a liability as time goes on.

 

10. No new pets.

Oh, and I forgot to mention this, but if you are knocked out during combat either because you're at 0 health or because you're stunned or knocked prone, your dog will continue to defend you as dogs do. He will attack anyone - friend or enemy - who approaches you unless they pass a Communication(Animal Handling) test, TN15. Dogs, especially mabari, are very protective of their owners.

 

But don't panic. Not all combat must be lethal. If the dog does attack and if the person who's approaching wants to render aid but is forced to attack back, they can knock the dog out without killing him. It will just take a little more time for them to get to you... which your character may or may not have.

 

This list probably seems like overkill, but I'm finding that it's better to work out the details in advance rather than debate it later.

I've reconsidered the advisability of separate initiative rolls for pets. It's hassle for you and a colossal hassle for me, and that's not really a fun way to play.

 

How do we feel about pets sharing their owners' initiative rolls? That way, players can just roll it all out at the same time.

I don't know how valid my opinion will be, not having a pet here, but I think it makes more sense and less hassle for the dogs to share initiative with their owner.

I'd prefer for pets to share the initiative rolls. It's more streamlined for the DM and pets' players, and it also means less waiting for the other posters since any given person doesn't essentially need to take two turns. 

 

I also don't see how it gives anyone an unfair advantage, because it could just as easily work to put both the pet and the owner lower in the initiative order than they otherwise would have been as to put them higher, since it's all luck of the draw anyway.

 

Tempest doesn't have a pet so my opinion isn't worth much, but I think combining would make way more sense.

I agree to streamline initiative, even though I don't have a pet either!

I guess it's indeed making things a lot easier if they'd share initiative. Not seeing much of an advantage or disadvantage combat wise either. And as we are with a large group already... it helps if we don't have to wait for 2-3 'extra' players :)

Fine by me. I don't usually have time to post for both in separate turns. I will just post Dog's combat turn with Merc's as I have been doing.
