PBS article link: Adult females oust teenage boys as largest gaming demographic

Those females mostly play casual games on their smartphones and tablets, of course.

I read this the other day, sent it to a friend of mine(21 year old lass), and she was pretty excited at the thought of it.

Ok? I wouldn't consider playing on a Smart phone or Nintendo wii gaming though.

Eh, not in my eyes which is the only thing that matters, but that is a debate for another time.

Gaming is gaming no matter the platform.

I guess technically it is. But not in any meaningful sense, at least in regards to the industry as a whole. There have been plenty of "studies" with similar conclusions, but when AAA publishers (across the board) actually care about female consumers then I might believe it.

Meh. I thought I already saw this study.

So Zelda is less of a game than CoD? I'm getting that implication.

I was more referring to  wii fitness. The console is too casual family friendly. Zelda, Mario, and the others I consider imports from real game systems.

This part especially kind of irritates me. Regardless of the fact that it's all gaming anyway, the Wii has some fantastic games on it.

EDIT: I guess it's already been covered.

Playing Solitaire, Minesweeper, and Facebook games is also considered gaming.

It doesn't matter how casual or hardcore it is, gaming is gaming.

I am so glad you didn't mention Farmville. Also, those were imported. I don't mind those.

I think gamers are too divisive. We have platform wars, console wars within the console platform, terms like "girl gamers", "casual gamers", "hardcore gamers", etc etc

Bout time we just called each other gamers, united for the sake of ourselves, our friends, our medium of entertainment, and overall grow up.

These terms do nothing but harm us in the end of the day.

Farmville is a Facebook game. Facebook games count as gaming, and given my mother plays them, that means she fits within the gamer demographic described in the article.

Which now that I think about it, IS REALLY FREAKING COOL. I should show her some stuff like the new Tomb Raider.

Pretty much this. They're both technically gaming, but there's a world of difference between $60 console/PC titles and games like Angry Birds or Candy Crush. And most adult female gamers definitely tend towards the latter rather than the former, making most of these studies at least somewhat (if unintentionally so) misleading.

Sure. If she's into it and plays it often, why not?

Yay, Candy Crush Saga and Kim Kardashian! We gamer now!

It's a study put out by the industry, for the industry, filled with feel-good quotes espousing all of the benefits of gaming and all the people playing them. You could probably pick up a wii controller and play Wii resort or something once and be considered a gamer for the purposes of this report.

I'm sure more women are playing games and messing about on their phones, but this fact tends to then get skewed to overstate their influence in other genres.
