This is simply misleading because video games now encompass a large selection of different games played on different platforms.

 

If you just group it all together, like a simpleton, then yes, women appear to be a very large gaming group. However, if you break it down by gaming platform and by game genres, then you will see that this claim is not very accurate. 

 

Women dominate the smartphone and tablet gaming market and when it comes to types of games, women dominate games such as Bejeweled, FarmVille, Candy Crush, and the like. Whereas if we look at PC gaming and types of games such as MOBAs or competitive FPS games or action oriented games or RPG games, men are the dominant sex. 

 

So its not just "Women are surpassing teenage boys or whatever else". It is better to look at the nuances, at the different types of games, the different platforms they are played on and whether they are highly competitive or not or highly stressful or not and then come to a logical and representative conclusion. 

 

Men and women on aggregate have different preferences in pretty much everything from mate selection criteria to the types of jobs that they typically pursue to the kinds of video games they play. That's reality.

Pretty much this. They're both technically gaming, but there's a world of difference between $60 console/PC titles and games like Angry Birds or Candy Crush. And most adult female gamers definitely tend towards the latter rather than the former, making most of these studies at least somewhat (if unintentionally so) misleading.

 

That's not how an executive would see it. People who play Angry Birds, to them, are people who might be interested in trying COD. So it will change design, marketing, etc. to try and get at this larger user-base.
