doesnt change anything. imo being a "gamer" means more than just playing video games (ingoring the fact that i wouldnt call a lot of smartphonegames "games"), see what Johnnie Walker wrote in post #262.

Well, that's cool and all in today's age, but growing up very few people who actively played video games could review them, keep up with the news or even wanted to discuss them, many wouldn't even have called themselves "gamers". I certainly never thought of myself as a "gamer", that's a more modern label.

I shall use an analogy to illustrate the depth and breadth of "Gaming" and "Gamers".

I'm sure most of us drive vehicles such as cars or motorcycles or lorries, yes ? So those of us who can and who have a legal permit to do so are "Drivers." However, even though we are Drivers, we are in no way equal or comparable to Drivers who drive Formula One cars or Formula Drift or Touring Car championships or Le Mans Endurance or Moto GP for a living. We are all Drivers but we have tiers of Drivers that we instinctively know and recognize. I doubt any of us here can compare our driving skills to that of Sebastian Vettel or Jeff Gordon or Valentino Rossi, but we are all Drivers.

Similarly, we are all Gamers. However, not all Gamers are equal. This is just a reality. We instinctively know that gaming has its tiers and a Gamer who plays Candy Crush on a tablet is not the same as a Gamer who plays competitive CS:GO. So yes, both of them are Gamers but they are Gamers of different tiers and different categories. I also doubt any of us here can compare our skills to that of pro E-sports tournament players but all of us are Gamers.

Is there a need to establish and properly define these gaming tiers ? Yes for purposes of research to avoid sweeping generalizations such as "Adult females surpass teenage boys as the largest gaming demographic in the USA". However, there is no need to define these tiers for the purposes of e-peen measurement. Unless if you are world champion E-sports player, there is always going to be a gamer who is more skilled than you will be.

I doubt you on both! I can drive a Formula one while playing in high ranks of a DOTA 2 tournament all at the same time!

[...]

imo being a gamer is not a question of skill but of the way you do it.

if you play a bit on your smartphone sometimes or start your console, play one or two rounds of COD/BF/whatever but dont care about games besides playing them you are a "casual gamer".

if you play games and also take part in discussions about games, watch/read or even create reviews, actively trace the development of the videogame industry or your favourite game series (more than just "when will the next part be released?"), play entire trilogies and not only the last part because it offers more action than the other two parts (wasnt ME3 sold more often than ME1 and ME2 together?), maybe even create your own fictional story for a game you played, simply if you love games you are a "real gamer". (hope this doesnt sound too silly^^)

and if you play competitive games and have high skills, you are a "pro gamer"^^

my opinion.

If you spend less than 1 hour gaming a day or less than 7 a week or basically you haven't logged 1820 total hours in the last 5 years then you are just a gaming tourist and none of this gaming time requires having superior skills.

Nowadays, I spend less than an hour a day on video games.

However, when I do, these games do require "superior" skills to play.

This line of logic hurts you more than helps you.

Because just like Toyota is much interested in selling ten million Corollas to soccer moms than making a better Formula One car, so too are developers more interested in making another Candy Crush than making a highly complex, strong AAA video game title.

Yes that hurts but that's reality, isn't it ? Mainstreaming and simplification for profits.

So basically you agree that a lot of females game. These tiers are irrelevant really. Professional drivers may be more of a driver than a soccer mom but they both drive cars.

<shrug> Back when Tetris came out, it was cutting edge video games. Now its more simple in mechanics than Candy Crush.

If this is many people's first step into gaming, it has to be done in baby steps. Its easy to forget that entire generations grew up playing Mario or Sonic or Crash Bandicoot. Many "gamers" today were playing games just as simple as the games that are now available through smart phones or tablets. Very few people pick up Day Z or Crusader Kings as their first video game experience ever. If they do, there is a good chance they would hate it.

Yes, it is an attempt at profit maximization, but its also the first time many of this demographic have played a video game before that was more complex than Solitaire on their PC.

I have never stated that human female do not game. In fact, gaming is a very ancient activity played by both sexes, dating all the way back to ancient civilizations.

The point that I have been making is that human males and human females, on aggregate, tend to play specific types of game.

Men on average tend to play games that require more tunnel vision, games that are highly competitive, games that involve lots of build crafting, games that involve lots of risk taking and games that are stressful. Examples include Dota 2, League of Legends, CS:GO, Starcraft, COD, etc.

Women on average tend to play games that are not very stressful or competitive, games that are a lot more socially interactive, games that does not have lots of risk taking and games that are more relaxing to play. Examples include The Sims, Candy Crush, FarmVille, Bejeweled, etc.

Even in a same game, men and women on average tend to focus on different things. Let's take Dragon Age and Skyrim for example. Male gamers who play these two games tend to play them in order to craft builds whereas female gamers tend to play them for romances. You can even look at the divide between male modders and female modders of Skyrim. Female modders tend to do mods like houses or textures whereas male modders tend to do heavy questing, bug fixing, new mechanics, combat overhaul, etc.

Gaming preferences between the sexes is a lot like the job preferences between the sexes. Men and women on average like and pursue different things. Why is this the case ? Well, it is because men and women are different. We are not the same and we are not equals. We are different and that is perfectly okay.

This reality remains true even when all other factors are made equal. Here is an excellent documentary called Hjernevask or Brainwashing. Here we see that in Norway, which is one of the most gender egalitarian country on the planet, have unequal proportions of men and women in things such as jobs. Here is a Youtube link for those who are interested in watching it. Its a 6 part series with English subtitles. https://www.youtube....h?v=cVaTc15plVs

So as you can see, despite what progressives and feminists and whatever other ideological group like to say, the sexes are different and we have different preferences and this is true even in video games.

In my opinion, we should allow gamers of both sexes to play whatever games they want or like instead of instituting some ridiculous affirmative action policies or making misleading statements without taking into account nuances such as "adult females surpass teenage boys as the largest gaming demographic in the US".

Remember, gaming, especially video gaming is first and foremost, about fun. It is not about buzzword fulfillment or a tool to achieve some supposed sociopolitical utopia.

Cheers.
