Pretty much this. They're both technically gaming, but there's a world of difference between $60 console/PC titles and games like Angry Birds or Candy Crush. And most adult female gamers definitely tend towards the latter rather than the former, making most of these studies at least somewhat (if unintentionally so) misleading.

Well, Candy Crush is just the devil.

Because she's not.

I say she is and she could probably kick your butt in that game.

That's why I said it depends on each persons definition.

Oh watch out! Now I'm scared.

But I might have considered her to be a gamer once upon a time when she played my Lego Harry Potter on the 360. She quit after a while and said she didn't like playing video games. So in MY opinion, that article is BS.

As a man of 25 years of age, there definitely needs to be more core female gamers out there.

I doubt much is going to change in the industry just because women play more smartphone games than men. Perhaps more casual games will be marketed more towards women than men? It doesn't really matter, the other systems are still dominated by males.

She quit after a while and said she didn't like playing video games.

Part of the problem is this prevalent idea that only core games can be considered true games. This gives people that don't play them the idea they aren't gamers when in fact they are, just playing games of a different sort on a different platform.

With mobile gaming and browser games on the rise, I imagine this will steadily decline with time.

If she's into tablet or cellphone games, maybe what she meant was she didn't like that Lego Harry Potter or console games in general.

If you introduce her the Sims 3, she might like it a lot.

Or even GTA V. A friend of mine who was not a gamer at all until her boyfriend got her to try GTA V, and she's been playing it everyday ever since on her brand new 360.

For GTA V. Might depend on how old the sister is.

Well then, little kids that play games on their Leap Frog should be considered gamers too.

She' s not the type of girl to play those type of games. She's my sister, I would know. Her Xbox has been happily collecting dust somewhere in her room for many years now. She's definitely, definitely not a gamer.

I don't really see much point in trying to police what constitutes 'real gaming' myself. Sure, you could argue that playing smartphone games and their ilk doesn't constitute real gaming; you could also argue that playing the occasional game of Madden or CoD with your drinking buddies doesn't constitute real gaming either, even though this kind of casual gaming probably accounts for a significant percentage of all males who play games. If you're on these boards at all, you're not representative of the majority of players, male or female.

For some reason this thread made me think of my world of warcraft guild. I don't know if it extends to all guilds but it seems like we've always had a relatively high number of female players and I don't mean characters. I tend to consider it a male until I've heard it on vent/mumble and possibly seen her on facebook. In many cases though it's wives and girlfriends. We had a few military couples and warcraft gave them something to do together while they were apart.

To those looking to refute the claims. Shouldn't you be posting actual survey information rather then saying what you believe? There was once a study asking people how much trash they threw out. Mostly were horribly wrong.

This isn't really all that new that women are becoming more common in gaming, although these stats are rarely relevant to core gaming due to the inclusion of tablet/mobile/facebook which makes up a pretty big number.

Although if they want to call themselves gamers then they can go nuts. You don't have to play core games in order to be a gamer.

Absolutely. Different platform, using gaming to educate. Gamers all the same.

I'd agree with this, to an extent. I don't think that smart phone gaming makes you any less of a gamer than your typical console/PC release.

But at the same time, I think the title is misleading in terms of what this could mean for marketing/the industry as a whole. Sure, alot of people are going after these straightforward pick up and play games, but that's not necessarily an indicator that this same group would be interested in the time/financial investment of more typical AAA titles, where issues of female representation are more often asked for.

no matter where we are, here will always be gamers playing games on any platform. from arcade games to video games. the female gamers are usually the most hardcore gamers when they're playing on video games. give her a GTAV, she'll beat your butt royally. give her Battlefield 3/4, she'll blow your butt up hardcore.

because the female gamers are Mistresses of gaming in general.

Do you think it's because they work harder to try overcome the men, so the guys will give her respect? Not trying to start an argument. I am just curious.

it depends on what female gamers want from male gamers.
may it be respect, recognition or some chance to play together.
