I never liked finishing moves that I couldn't activate myself.  Those kind of moves shouldn't be random, IMHO.

glad there's no armor/weapon decay.

while more "realistic", I've always found such systems more of a hassle.....iow.......one more thing to worry about instead of enjoying the game.

So happy there are no finishing blows. It was way annoying having time get slowed down in the middle of battle. Not to mention that you could still take damage while locked in the animation...it just really messed up the flow. Finishing blows on a boss enemy, though, would be okay.

I'm also glad there's no weapon/armor decay. While the visual effect would be kinda cool, it's just a hassle to have to keep repairing your stuff. I've never been a fan of that in any game that has equipment decay.

The Varric/possible Inquisitor rogue ability...sounds...interesting? Not sure if it's a good interesting or a bad interesting. I'm at a loss at how that would be explained in lore, unless it's a magical device, and that would be pushing it. Seems to be further proof that companions share our specializations though.

Am I understanding it right that we will only have access to 8 abilities in combat? Are we still able to bring up the combat wheel and choose from all of our skills, or is it just the 8 we map to x,y,b,a etc?

You can have 8 abilities mapped it says. I don't see why they wouldn't additionally have a combat wheel where you can pick all of them as before.

I think he was saying you could map eight abilities, for those who prefer real-time combat. They will most likely still have the wheel for those who prefer pause and play.

I would imagine they mean 8 abilities mapped to the controller buttons.

The combat wheel is in it was shown during the E3 gameplay video. Im pretty sure it will still have abilities and sustained tabs.

8 abilities mapped is really great by me, but I also would want access to my other spells in combat. I tend to map my 'immediate' skills (chain lightening, stone fist etc) to the pad buttons, and leave the more tactical/area spells to the wheel.
I'll be sad if this has been removed.

I play like this too, but I really don't think they removed them. We've seen the wheel shown in demos, and I think the 3 o'clock position with the hand is our abilities. It would make no sense to limit them that way.

I agree. I enjoyed the dragon killing moves, but it was no fun to be locked in the ogre kill animation while the rest of the group was being overrun.

I also like having the followers give strategy advice. A nice little touch.

Sounds promising. I like the sound of focus because I like alternate resources, some interesting design space there. Having no or limited healing magic is also an interesting choice combined with health not regenerating. I hope it is designed well enough to add tension rather than tedium though, I'm optimistic about it but it could easily go wrong.

Let's just hope the PC version makes proper use of the mouse/keyboard controls and isn't a 1:1 console port.

Since none of my questions got answered on the first Combat Q & A thread got answered

and aaarcher86 was really nice an posted them to twitter to be asked

i might as well re post them again here

1.) Is Blocking an active or passive state?

2.) Will it consume some resource when used?

3.) What attacks bypass the blocking ability?

4.) Do Shields have offensive abilities?

Thanks again.

Just... don't.

I am pretty excited about combat, seems like Dragon's Dogma but with player tactics!

There's a fun one put together by our ability designers, Jon Fuller and Luke Barrett, called Fallback Plan. Only Varric, and possibly your Inquisitor, gain access to this ability, which lets you place a gadget on the ground; if you get into trouble later, you can instantly relocate to that position. If you upgrade it, you'll also be set back to the level of health you had upon placing the gadget, and—if you are standing close to an enemy—you'll kidnap the enemy back with you. By combining this with stealth, and placing traps or mage glyphs under the marker, many hijinks can ensue.

Sounds like Varric actually is an Artificer then.

With mage healing spells all but gone having a character dedicated to crafting is going to be huge. Will be going through potions like a kid in a candy store.

Well, I'm no dev, but I think I know the answers to some of these. Check out this video:

At 1:00, we see Block and Slash which is a block and retaliate ability that consumes Stamina over time...but it's an ABILITY. We see it at 4:15. Shields might have something similar.

We see Shield Bash (Blackwall) at 2:14 and again in the boss fight (it has no real effect), so that's an offensive shield ability. I also wanna say I've seen some sort of dash and slash ability where you rush at a target and attack (Weapon & Shield).

1.) Depends. We've seen one blocking ability with 2-handed, and that may exist with Shields. Similarly, passives could be defensive in nature too.

2.) Probably Stamina since most things do (like with Block and Slash).

3.) No idea.

4.) Shield Bash, at least. They almost certainly have more (imo).

Hmm..yes but does that work on high dragons?
