I can Tweet it - to which Dev?  I don't know who does what over at that place lmao

AAArcher86 i would appreciate if you could re-tweet my questions to any of the Devs

To elaborate on my questions furthermore;

1.) Is Blocking an active or passive state? I am really interested in is blocking a active state meaning we chose defense of offense. If were about to get pounded and can't dodge can we pause the game go into tactical mode and enable blocking?

2.) Will it consume some resource when used? I'm assuming it will take stamina to block, but will it be only USED on a successful block and for that matter is blocking a chance to block or a guarantee to block? See what i mean?

3.) What attacks bypass the blocking ability?  What i am asking here is on one of the game-play videos we see a templar blocking some ice based magic, so blocking CAN block magic, but on the video you linked the boss seems to be able to "Sunder" with his powerful two handed based weapon right through a shield blocking ability. So i would like to know what attack CAN be blocked and what CAN'T.

4.) Do Shields have offensive abilities? Yes your right we have seen some of these but nothing official confirmed. I am actually really interested if the quality and SIZE of the shield (Tower or Buckler) will affect the damage output it is capable of, that sort of thing. Also we see weapons with sockets would love to see if shield have sockets as well.

We aren't MEANT to have tons and tons of abilities at our disposal because that's not how they're created/balanced this time around. We're meant to take, for instance, Winter's Grasp and use it again and again because it never loses effectiveness.

Effectiveness isn't the only reason we choose abilities.

I like to try different things to keep combat interesting. DAO offered many ways to defeat enemies. They weren't all equally effective, and we certainly didn't need them all (the same tactics would work on almost any fight), but that doesn't mean it wasn't fun to try new things.

I loved Glyph of Warding. Those weapon and defense buffs were great things drop in the bottom of a Tactics list.

And if you played with FF turned on, it was even more valuable to have a wide range of abilities handy. If you're in an enclosed space, those big AoE spells aren't the best idea.

Also, different enemies had different vulnerabilities. Beasts had terrible Will saves, so it was handy to have Sleep available for the occasional wolf ambush. And once you have sleeping opponents, of course you want Horror for the combo, but you also don't want to wake them up by hitting them with splash damage.

Laidlaw just tweeted saying if questions weren't clarifying something they've previously released/talked about they won't answer - no more super specific questions :(

Mike Laidlaw @Mike_Laidlaw 20s

Folks, please dial down the hyper specific DAI questions. If it is not clarification on footage already released, I will not answer.

How about hunting combat? One of the early trailers showed an archer hunting a deer. Will warriors have hunting options or are they only going to able to attack with warrior options (2 handed/shield).

Say i want to hunt for a bear. Can i tell everyone else to not attack but watch? Same for say a herd of nugs

Ahem, I've said this before - why is everyone assuming that the game mechanic teleportation IS actual teleportation?

Because we haven't seen the flavor text for this ability yet. And even if they explain the "teleportation" effect (zip line? harness?), how do they explain the hp reset? Built in stim-packs?

Yeah, we can hunt animals.  I believe it's the same as attacking any enemy.  Bears, deer, nugs, foxes, etc.

I guess my concern is more coming from just playing ESO for the last few months.   In ESO, you are given just 5 ability slots.    Lots of people claim it makes building a character more strategic.    In my experience, it just meant that you grew bored seeing the same 5 animations over and over and over and over.

I grew bored with ESO rather quickly because its severe limitation in how many abilities you could use at any given time, meant that every combat was essentially the same.    You couldn't have "situational" abilities slotted, you couldn't have summoned pets slotted if they were only marginally useful.   You had to ONLY have your best 5 abilities and spam them in the same order in every combat.    It grew rather dull.

If we are unable to just choose from any ability we have at any moment we might need it, then the UI design will have been a bad choice.   I hope that this is not the case.

That was my biggest problem with ESO. I had a dozen awesome skills and could use five at a time.

However, unlike ESO it sounds like you can change your skills in combat, so it isn't limiting how many skills you can use, it is limiting how many skills you can use easily. It is just adding a very unnecessary and tedious layer to combat.

I did not mean that certain abilities would be more or less effective based on the situation - that's what makes abilities and builds interesting (for me, anyway). I only meant that they condensed abilities that were, in many cases, alike in spirit and intent. For instance, they got rid of all of the different aura spells and just made one that could be upgraded - the functionality was largely the same but more condensed.

You could go too far with this, of course, and make one buff, one ice spell, one fire spell, and so on and so forth. Personally, I wonder what it would be like if we got abilities more inline with how magic seems to work in the lore. I mean, what if we put a rank in Fire instead of individually selecting certain fire spells and just got Flashfire and Flame Burst? Slower but broader progression. I don't mind the current system, but it's an interesting thought.

I'd rather have fun and tactical tools to work with than nitpicking over abilities.

An yes I do mean "nitpicking" because it's just a convenient stylization of a thing that can happen in-universe, the taint deal is a much bigger offender.

The taint bit is actually adressed in-game, though. One of the Hawke siblings can get it. Alistair and the warden has it, and every companion in Awakening has it.

Hmmmm, could be an enchanted object that creates a haste like effect.

Wich Varric can't make since he can't use magic.

No, but he could use it, if it were found at some point in the story.

Still, not an ideal solution, but I'm hoping there is something to explain this without killing lore.

The best explanation I could come up with is....

Illusion magic (probably again from an artifact), an illusion of varric running around is what the enemy is hitting (thus explaining the HP regain), while Varric sits there and snipes enemies (explains his continued ability use and damage). It doesn't, however, explain bringing an enemy back with you, or failing to use the ability and being knocked unconscious in the interim.

Weapon styles are still class restricted?

That's boring. At least the double-bladed daggers sound interesting for rogues.

I highly suspect it is a simple visual change (and a slightly different animation style).

I still don't get why they are restricting weapons to classes, sigh.

HATE daggers, HATE playing as a rogue.

I want my dual wielding front-line warrior (Or give me an offensive focused one-handed sword and buckler style warrior instead of making shields defensive focused) , just something aside from two handed weapons that look slow/weighty (two handed swords don't weigh that much and cna be used a LOT faster then DA:O) or a sword and shield "tank" warrior.

And no awesome final hit animations like DA:O, I loved these, it gave you a cool "sweet" moment to have them happen rarely and made it stand out.

Morrigan, Aveline, Wynne, Leliana, Zevran, Sten, Merril, Isabela, Varric, Oghren in DAO...Bethany/Carver only have it in a scripted moment.

There's no arguing about it, the taint has been ignored for gameplay purposes.

Aveline's husband died from it. The taint doesn't "stick" to everyone, though. But yes. There should have been a possebility for Hawke and others to get tainted. Since its adressed in the game several times, anyway, this bit is not as bad as teleporting dwarves, she-hulk smashing gates down, and warriors summoning rocks from the ground. Those are way more glaring and they are there with zero explanation or sense.

This only makes things worse, it is adressed in cinematics but never ever comes up during gameplay, that is a MAJOR lore violation, your gate-smashing and rocks summoning are nothing compared to that.

No its not. Not by a long shot, since we see it happen to plenty others. Smashing gates with your arm is way worse, since it nullifies the entire point of having castles, doors, or gates in Thedas. Siege engines are also pointless, yet we see them in the game.

Its not a lore violation if we see it happen several times. That means it follows the lore. It doesn't follow it 100 percent, since Hawke seems immune to the taint for no reason, but its still being followed.

Judging by how the constable describes the children as especially "virulent" in Awakening after Amaranthine is attacked, it may be that the corruption from the taint does not ordinarily infect most people it comes into contact with.

Some people just have a hard time getting tainted? Is this hard to accept? It's for the same reasons 1/3 of people who take the Joining die, why some Wardens go on their Calling in 5 years instead of 20, and why the Architect needs Grey Warden blood to awaken darkspawn.

Little is known about the taint it's variables are practically unexplored. Maybe all of the companions that didn't get tainted were lucky. Or maybe they're just genetically resistant to it for some reason.

Spare Avernus and the Architect folks. They're probably the only people actively researching the subject.
