I just can't picture Leandra saying "thank you" to Gamlen for losing what was legally her inheritance, thus forcing her children into servitude to get them into Kirkwall; then being allowed to live in his shack. From one perspective it wasn't so bad Leandra left because that left everything to Gamlen; legally or not. Is it wrong that she left because she loved someone who wasn't socially acceptable? She would have been content to stay away forever and let Gamlen have the estate to himself before he lost it but the blight forced her back. Does that make her a bad person? Gamlen was like the caretaker of a mansion who accidentally burns it down, and then lets its owner live in his shack. Should he be shown gratitude? The situation would be different if the estate was legally his. He's still responsible for the Amell's assets but he'd be less so than when it's not legally even his.

It took them a year to find grandparents will. Were they showing at least a bit gratitude towards him before finding out about it? No. Leandra was convinced that her parents left her nothing. So they were all sure that he lost what was legally his and saw how poor he got. And yet, they all had no problem with living with Gamlen for his money, just because they had to work for someone? And I'll say it again. It's not  like they were actual slaves, but they had profits from working for Meeran/Athenril as well. So what does it say about them? Sure they got nice excuse for dispising him when they found out what really happened, but fact that their attitude towards him from that point onwards was exactly the same as before is certainly not right. They were treating him bad from the very start and I find no excuse for that.

Of course she should not thank him for losing all money. It was his biggest fault and there is no doubt about it, but he did give them home even if he didn't have much at the moment of their arrival. Even if he ended there because of his own mistakes, doesn't that count for something? No matter the circumstances without his help they would not get into city, regardless of his wealth.

I never said she was a bad person. But I certainly see her as selfish one. I am not blaming her for choosing own happiness over the family and I know that she had no chance when it comes to coming back. What bothers me is only her attitude towards that whole thing. Does she even admit that Gamlen had it difficult? She should at least thank him for taking care of their parents when she could not do it, but that's a bit different matter and I did not mean that when I was talking about being grateful.

After getting back the estate, wouldn't it be nice of her to be like: "You know Gamlen, despite all the bad things which happened, thank you for not sending us away, when you had the chance." Like seriously. That would make her and all that "love is more important than money" attitude so much more belivable.

A lack of gratitude towards Gamlen can be justified based on the fact that Hawke and their sibling are forced into "indentured servitude" (ME2 reference) for a year because Gamlen lost all of the money/assets that legally belonged to Leandra. Sure, he found them opportunities to get into Kirkwall and gave them a shack to live in, but that wouldn't have been necessary if he didn't lose everything chasing after a gem not even worth a single sovereign.

Hawke and his sibling were not some 12 year old kids, they could make any choice they had.  Gamlen used his seedy contacts to actually allow them to stay in the city and grease some palms.  The alternative was the next boat back to fereldan.  No one had a lot of choice and Gamlen could just as easily have told Leandra and her brood to sod off.

I was going to reply but these posts only seem to be getting longer and I realized I really don't care about this subject that much. Think what you want about Gamlen.

I actually liked the progression of Gamlen's relationship with Hawke, from the sleazy uncle in Act 1, to the grieving loved one in Act 2, and then finally getting to meet his daughter in Act 3, at which point he will actually warm up to Hawke.

Problem is, however, that some of his passive dialogue if you click on him can be pretty nasty, especially if you're in a relationship with one of the companions. It's even creepier if you're a female Hawke in a relationship with Isabela, because after calling her a "pirate sl*t", he'll then ponder on the idea of two women, despite one of them being his niece. I always thought there should at least have been a quick auto-response of disapproval at these sorts of remarks, if not simply having it in real dialogue where you can say something nasty back.

That was my problem with Gamlen. I was starting to feel alright about him, but then he came out with that line, and the goodwill went away.

Thank you for the discussion then. I really enjoyed that. :)

I feel like his character is rather unbalanced as if they could not decide if he is a bad guy, or not. He does bad things, and can be really mean but at the same time he has his better moments like with Charade, or when you learn how harsh his life was. Also even if he's really unpleasant sometimes you can understand his motivation for being mean and bitter.

Gamlen does say something along the lines of "well, it wasn't as if I was standing at a bridge tossing the money over" in regards to losing the fortune, it wasn't an overnight thing.

But yeah, I liked Gamlen as well. I think he had a lot of good points. Although half the talk about Gamlen between the siblings makes me think that despite the fact they're speaking ill, it's not as if it's particularly malicious up to the point about getting into the cellar door for the will (how does Leandra still have a key all this time really? )
