What's up guys! This is where I post all my videos that I've made for Mass Effect and discuss the themes and thinking behind them, as well as my personal favorite moments. Sit back and enjoy!
First up is my latest fan video, "One/The Child and the Warrior," set to Metallica's "One" from their album ...And Justice for All.
Mass Effect, as we all know, is rife with anti-war themes. And that's what I tried to capture here, while also evoking the excitement and tension of the game itself. "One" is a thoroughly anti-war song, and details the horrors that large-scale conflict can bring. The subject of the song is a quadruple amputee who is also blind and dumb, in effect suffering from a unique form of "locked-in syndrome" where he can hear the outside world and feel external stimuli, but cannot interact with anything. He makes it perfectly clear that he wants out of this living hell, this waking death, if you will, by any means necessary. I imagine Shepard (at least Paragon Shep) being stuck in the same situation, albeit in a different form: although he/she is perfectly healthy (physically speaking), they and their crewmates want out of the Reaper War, but they feel a responsibility to actually step up and finish the job on behalf of the rest of the galaxy; therefore they're "locked into" this life of violence and death until they either end the Reapers' cyclical harvesting of advanced lifeforms or die, and there's nothing they can do to change it.
Favorite moment: The latter half of the video. The music is blazing fast, and that ending...
Next is the first ME video that I ever uploaded to YouTube: "Ashes to the Stars" set to Tarot's song of the same name from their album Crows Fly Black.
The themes in this one are a bit simpler. In this video, I focus more on the wonder and danger of space and the epic scale of the series. The central running theme here is the story: Shepard, having been spaced during the famous and awesome opening of ME2, reflects on his past as well as what could have been. It's a peek into his thoughts, feelings, and memories shortly before his death, and the music and visuals particularly serve to highlight the emotions the series brings to mind: happiness, sadness, tension, adrenaline, wonderment, and so on. In all, not a thematically complex video, but not simple, either.
Favorite moment: The guitar solo and the moments leading up to it. I'm amazed how well the image of Sovereign descending onto the Citadel Tower matched the lull in the music with a bit of speeding up. And of course, the shot of the console blowing up in the Collector drone's face in time with the drums was pretty cool. You'd almost thing BioWare had exactly this in mind when they made that part of the ME2 ending cutscene.
Thanks for watching my videos, guys! If you like them, why not head over to YouTube and hit the like button?
And by the way, any constructive criticism you have is appreciated. I'm one of those people who constantly strives to perfect their craft, and feedback helps with the process.
Cheers!
