Ah, appealing to my baser instincts. I like it.

As a grad student I sympathize with people who couldn't join us for financial reasons feeling left out, but deciding at the last minute that no one gets to sign Shadow's letter at all would still be really deflating to me. (I'm puzzled as to why I feel disappointed -- I don't actually want personal acknowledgment -- I think it might just be a cultural expectation ingrained in me, as in the office card analogy?)
What if we put a post on the Cullen thread asking anyone not in the cake group who'd still like to sign their username (and/or a small note?) to PM a message to some contact person from the cake group? I know we try to avoid talking about it there to keep it a secret, but Allan's the main dev who visits and he already knows. Then everyone who wants to join in can.
*shrug* Don't get me wrong, I'll happily go along with whatever we decide. I just think no signing, no notes, financial contributions only, would take some fun and personalization out of it, and if we open signing to people who didn't contribute money that solves the "left out" problem while still retaining the personalization.
We could find a compromise: people who want to make it more personal can write a couple of words, but we still sign the whole thing as #Cullenites, how about that? Cullenites from tumblr, twitter and the forum may also send their short messages if they like.
I don't want to add anything myself, because I suck at words, and I don't want to stand out of the group too, but if it's important to you, then why not? I'm not going to ruin your fun.
But I would like to keep the nicknames out of it anyway.
Double post.

Just wanted to add that I agree with this. I am okay with adding #Cullenites or whatever, as long as my note and signature stays.
Do we know how far along ShadowReign is in writing it anyway? I'm fine if we want to add #Cullenites but I think the notes and signatures should stay as planned.
I'm in two minds about this. Part of me prefers that we just sign #Cullenites because Shadow is writing a letter from all of us. And yet part of me, wants to let people write their own notes to include as they want to express their personal thanks.
In the end I'll just go with the flow.
Do we know how we're sending the letter to BW? Is it going with the cakes?
I think so. We can pass the letter on to the bakery and they will hand it over to BW together with the cakes.
Apologies in advance if I'm not making sense.. not feeling well.
I would like the ability to send a personal note along with it being signed from everyone on the Cullen thread. I know there are some who don't really like the name tag #Cullenites though, so maybe "from the Cullen thread" would be better. Just a suggestion.
The cakes will be delivered within the next couple of weeks, yes? We should probably nail down the letter thing real fast so people can post their notes up by a certain time to give the person doing the letter enough time to do so.
Generally, I believe that Shadow is going to address a lot of the things that people want to write about in their personal notes so I'm not even sure if there is a lot to add.
Regarding the hashtag, well, #Cullenites is already on one of the cakes so it wouldn't really change much if we sign the letter differently.
But I'm fine with whatever you guys decide
.
I can send Shadow another DM and ask her to check this thread but I know that there are some things going on in her private life so it might take her while.
The cakes will be delivered on October 17th.

Hmmmmmm to make it short and sweet, or long and poetic?
It should definitely be Haiku because.....well do you even need a reason for Haiku?
It's ok, I'm only mostly serious. ![]()
Don't make the letter too long because no one will read it then. IMHO it should be somewhere between 1/2 page and 1 page (without any personal notes), so short and sweet might be better.

Darn, and here I thought I could add in some Shakespearian Sonnets to woo the crowd. (I kid xD). But, yeah I'm leaning to about that length, otherwise I'd need a lot of material/personal notes from everyone to add for a longer letter.
Did we decide who we're sending it too next week? Have I asked that question already? c__c
Can't believe it's only one week away!
So if it's been decided that we're now adding personal messages to the letter where do we post our message. Do we just put it up here?
I think if that's the way the groups decided to go, it would be better if we all said something or signed rather than just a few contributors.
Thanks

I think we've decided for it to be much shorter as there isn't enough time to get everyone's message included. However, if there is something very specific you would like for me to add, PM me and I will see how I can incorporate it into the letter.
Hey Shadow, I think Sister Goldring is referring to small, self-contained notes containing individual thoughts from us, to come after your larger note on behalf of everyone -- so not something you need to worry about incorporating into your draft!
That said, since so many people joined in on the bee project that I would strongly prefer it not be confined to my individual note, I do have one request for the group note: could you add something to the effect of "Along with the cake, we have also made N donations of bees through Heifer International in the DAI team's honor. We hope that's enough to fill a few jars!" Exact wording is up to you. I'll PM you what N is on Saturday--right now it's looking like 7.
Yeah, I'm just a little confused about what I need to be doing before the cake thing happens. So if anyone has the details of what we are supposed to include where, I'd be grateful if they let me know. ![]()

Not sure if we decided anything at all
. If the majority wants to include little personal notes & their forum names it might be best to pm Shadow their notes so she can insert them at the bottom of her letter or on a second page. That way the texts would all be together. And then we should really pass the letter & personal notes on to the bakery so everything will be delivered along with the cakes.
We could probably pm Allan the texts as well but I prefer it the way I descibed above because everything stays together.

Ahem...I'm still not entirely sure what we decided and before the notes cause a great deal of confusion on the last day we should decide this for good now. My apologies if this was already clear to the rest of you but I think it's better to be safe than sorry
.
So, what do we want to do? Here are some suggestions that came up during the previous discussion. I'm just gathering them to keep track :
No matter what we decide, Giggle gets credits for her artwork!
If we decide to write notes everybody should write a few lines, not just 5 people. And we should really keep them short. Twitter style is probably the best way to go.
Okay, what do you guys think?
I vote for Option 3 in Caja's post above, and agree with Sister Goldring that it would be strongly preferable if everyone wrote something for the reasons she listed. People who hate writing could just put something as short as "Thanks for your work!" or "Can't wait for DA:I!" or something. The downside is if anyone absolutely hated the idea of having their username on it, it doesn't work for them. Hopefully no one felt this way, but if so maybe they could just sign "An Anonymous Cullenite" or something?
I agree with Sister Goldring, too. My personal preference is that we just sign with "Cullenites" and don't write personal notes since Shadow will probably address a lot of points in her letter anyway. BUT I don't want to ruin the fun for everybody else. So, if we sign the letter and write notes we should all sign it & write something. I also like the idea of adding something like "on behalf of the Cullenites".
Whatever everyone decides is fine with me--doesn't matter either way. I am happy with just signing from the Cullenites or if we are doing personal notes that is ok too. I do think no matter what we should add something like on behalf of the Cullenites as there may have been some who wanted to contribute but couldn't financially.
I agree that we need to figure this out asap though--isn't the cake being delivered on Friday?
