i like Varric over oghren, but i still like oghren, and wow i did not expect to see so much hate for oghren in this thread, particularly how he was in awakening, some of his best lines in the series was in awakening, and people talk like he had a big personality change too, wth? he is basically the same character, the main difference i saw in awakening compared to origins was that he cared about felsi and his kid. if caring about your family makes characters worse than yeah, most of the dragonage cast should have gotten worse over time
anyways back to original topic, varric over oghren.

As a regular in the Varric thread, I'd have to say... hmmmm.... maybe Varric?
Yeah. Varric. I think I'm comfortable with this decision.

Oghren's Joining in Awakening was one of the funniest moments in the series, IMO.

Varric is my ultimate bro and I bring him with me no matter what class I play. He's so down to earth and a generally great guy all around. So who's best is no contest to me.

It's a rubbish scene making fun of the important part of DA lore.

Varric all the way. Any thing good about Oghren was ruined by DA:A.

Oghren, he is the result of a stereotypical fantasy dwarf placed in the world of the Dragon Age dwarves and is an outcast because of it.
I enjoyed that he honestly seemed like he wanted to change and by the end of Origins he says that you've made him a better man but you can see he still isn't perfect, I think of Awakening as him having second thoughts and doubting himself, which may be why he joined the wardens, to seek the support and friendship of the Warden.
If the warden continues to support him then he no longer doubts himself and becomes a family man.

He is like my favourite constantly drunk but sweet uncle
When I started Awakening for the first time it felt so lonely without the old group which was to busy to even visit me (except Alistair and Wynne). And then Oghren returned right in the beginning. At that time I even hardly remembered him yet such warm welcome just melted my heart
And I love his moustache, yeah

I like both of them.
If I were to rate both of them on a scale of 10, then Oghren would be 8.5 / 10 and Varric would be 9 / 10.
My ideal DA party setup :- Playable Character, Oghren, Varric, Morrigan.
However, I am surprised by the amount of hate Oghren is getting in this thread.
As for Oghren's stereotypes, it isn't what kind of stereotype you are branded with, it is with how you live with that said stereotype because stereotypes are just a group of criteria that is socially agreed upon to describe someone from a particular group. You can have all that criteria but what matters is how you live your life with them.
Additionally, Varric is in a sense stereotypical of a surface dwarf. He is part of the Merchants Guild, he has lots of connections, he has some shadiness to him, he can use coin or trickery (rogue skills) to get his way. However, the way he lives his life makes him appealing regardless of the stereotype.
The same goes for Oghren. He drinks, he has terrible social manners and he is not very hygienic. However, the way he lives his life makes him appealing regardless.

Oghren was a staple of my origins party. His attitude gave me an excellent laugh and he provided an excellent contrast between the Orzammar dwarves and the traditional rpg dwarves. It also gave him a backstory that explained why he was how he was due to his marriage to Branka the crazy lunatic Smith Paragon who got all his family and most of his friends massacred in her hunt for a magical anvil. After putting that entire affair to bed he leaves with you and shows why he is one of the best warriors in orzammar. Also after he meets felsi he shows how he actually does have a softer side (to an extent. This is oghren after all.)
In awakening I see him trying to find a purpose that suits his skills as well as looking for ways to get past his insecurities about Felsi and the nugget. I welcome him with open arms into the warden's and continue to support him and encourage him to have a hand in helping his wife and child. I like to think once the events of awakening culminate felsi opens an inn at the vigil which oghren takes all the new warden recruits to get drunk at the night before they got through their joining (his joining was awesome. Staying conscious the entire time his body was changing just tells you there was some benefit to all that drinking XD)

I identify much more with oghren than I do with Varric. Don't get me wrong I like Varric but Oghren was just awesome ( and I am not just saying this because I am Scottish/Irish desended)

Nice bit of head canon there. Felsi and the nugget moving near Vigil would make things easier. My head canon is that Oghren cleans up a bit and is a Warden Drill Sergeant of sorts. He's in charge of whipping Warden Recruits and Ensigns into shape. Kind of like Kilowog from the Green Lantern Corps.
My head canon and your head canon should team up.

Hard to choose. I do love Steve Blum, but Brian Bloom is much more diverse.
Gonna have to go with Varric, the shining light through DA2. Though Oghren is a more complex character.
Zoltan Chivay beats both though ^.^

Varric vs Ogrhen: Lets break this down
Banter: Both are humorous, to some extent. Varric is much more versitile in his humor.
Advantage: Varric, by a chest hair
Utility: Based on auto leveling, both are the best at what they do for the party (Sten auto-levels poorly). Both are also the best archer/two-handed in the series, mostly because archers suck in DAO and Carver and Fenris never shut up. On replay, I wish i had Varric avaliable in DAO and Oghren available in DA2.
Advantage: Push
Personal Quests: Both are central to key plot points and quests, so thats a tie. Of their secondary quests Oghren's has a lot of heart, even if you are wingmanning him, as you see some of his insecurities. Varric's is similar that way too (he's embarassed by the fate of his brother), but by the time the second half of it comes around in Act 3, you are tired of and never want to see the mansion layout again.
Advantage: Oghren, due to BW's lazy repeating textures and maps on side quests.
Loadout: Oghren uses potentially the same weapons and armor you do, Varric has Bianca, a character in its own right, and a bad-ass duster coat.
Advantage: Varric
After careful analysis, the Paragon of Manliness wins, barely. In hindsight, Bioware dropped the ball by not saving an Oghren return for DA2.

I found Oghren to be the weakest character in DAO by a mile he was just the generic drunk warrior dwarf that I've seen too many times.
Varric was a very strong character and one of the only bright spots in DAI. So there is no competition here between these two characters at all.

Oghren has nuance. But it goes over people's heads. Dude has serious depression issues which are touched on, but he gets dismissed as your sterotypical drunken dwarf.
SMH.

Varric all the way. Oghren is a nice character, but I felt he was too cliched and I did not like his character reset in Awakening.
