Varric

Varric, although it's quite difficult for me since I find that salacious drunkard fun to hang around with, but in the end I prefer Varric, he's a good and loyal friend and probably best sidekick.

This basically describes how I feel as well. My canon Warden was a Male Dwarf Noble who was best friends with Oghren and my canon Hawke was a Male Mage who was best friends with Varric, so its hard. (Both romanced an apostate.(

Varric by far! I liked Oghren in Origins but not in Awakening.

I found Oghren hilarious but Varric wins for me. 

 

Oghren seemed a bit one dimensional where as Varric was quite a complicated character despite being very likable.

I think Varric and Oghren go together like Hydrazine and Dinitrogen Tetroxide.

Varric. I don't find old drunk sexist guys that doesn't care about hygiene funny. Oghren is only character that I can't understand why people like him.. to me it feels he's just dump for all bad qualities there can be in person XD Or maybe that's the reason?

Oghren's honestly the closest a Dragon Age companion has come to me genuinely disliking them. Meanwhile, Varric's a resident on the top three.

Oghren's obviously got a lot of popularity behind him.  He was a big enough fan-favorite they included him in Awakening after much fan demand.

I never really liked Oghren, not like I disliked him either, he was just...meh. Never used him either, as I found Alistair and Sten far more useful.

But Varric is great, very likeable character. Didn't use him either because I found Isabella and Sebastian more useful

I thought Oghren was funny, but I could never stomach him for long periods of time. Varric on the other hand was not only funnier Oghren (in my opinion) but also much deeper. I just couldn't get enough of Varric.

Don't hate Oghren but I hated how he was written in Awakening

Oghren was written horribly in Awakening.  And once I did not even recruit him and survived.

 

Popularity is subjective.

I'd say he was excellently written horrible* person. Which makes a significant difference.

*) though it can be easily argued there's as much of 'tragic' as 'horrible'.
