Oghren is rude with his toilet humour and sex jokes. Varric is smart and clever and knows how to form a joke without resorting to body parts.

Oghren is a disgusting, belligerent, sexist homophobe.
Why, because he says nasty things about Branka when he finds out she's been cheating on him with a woman? I thought he handled that remarkably well, I hate to think of what I would do in his place...

Oghren..
I spent so much time with him.. And as sexy as Varric is, he'll never take the place of my Nugget.

I found Oghren easily tolerable, mainly because he comes very close, if not the closest, to being a realistic person. That person has lot of traits which make him not pleasant, but --especially in the Awakening-- that tended to invoke pity rather than disgust. An interesting deconstruction does not make a tolerable character. Yes, in principle, Oghren is an interesting deconstruction of what a D&D dwarf stereotype would be like. It just so happens that a D&D dwarf stereotype is such an intolerable monster than unlikable is pretty much the only thing he's good at being.

Varric just because Oghren is so stereotypical.

Varric. He's intelligent, and rather witty. I like his voice too.
I think Oghren might be that one character who's never grown on me, no matter how many times I play. It probably doesn't help that I find burping and farting in other people's company to be really disgusting and unhygienic.

I hate Ohgren. I didn't let him become a Warden and tanked most of Awakening on my rogue, cos I hate him so much (Justice was the last companion I picked up)
I like Varric.
Wait, you can have it to where Oghren doesn't become a Warden in Awakening? I did not know this, I certainly would not have allowed him to join if I knew how.

Yeah I think Oghren is awesome! If the question was, who was the better dwarf? I'd definitely say Oghren! He's so stereotypically dwarf, but Varric is all his own character. He is defying all preconceived prejudice!

I would take Sigrun over both of them
So the stories of the Antivan Milkshake were true.

Oghran just seemed a stereotypical drunk, belligerent dwarf and vulgar to boot. I really didn't like having him in my party in DAO, although I did my best to get to know him in camp. I was rather disappointed that of all the people they could have brought back in Awakening, it had to be him. That said, he seemed so pleased to see me at the beginning, I felt bad not being able to reciprocate. Nevertheless he only stayed with me while I still needed him and I replaced him with Sigrun (even though she was a rogue) or Justice.
I like Varric because he wasn't a stereotype and by his own admission, not a typical dwarf. Liked his humour and his voice. I didn't always keep him in the party, particularly if I was a rogue myself, and if not, there were times when I preferred having Isabella along for her knife work or Sebastian just for a different flavour.
I'm actually glad to see Varric return in DAI but it is a pity there couldn't be another new dwarf character as well, just for variety.

Definitely Varric. I never liked Oghren or his attitude at all. Also he joined my party fairly late (I left Orzammar till last) so he never really felt like part of the 'gang'. I was happy to see he was in Awakening so I could get to know him better, but he irritated me just as much, I wish someone else was in Awakening instead (I feel like Zevran or Wynne could have easily replaced him story-wise, maybe even Dog)
Whereas Varric is actually funny (especially compared to Oghren), a good friend to Hawke, feels vital to the story and also has a certain charm. Can't wait to see him back in Inquisition.

Oghren, he is the result of a stereotypical fantasy dwarf placed in the world of the Dragon Age dwarves and is an outcast because of it.
I enjoyed that he honestly seemed like he wanted to change and by the end of Origins he says that you've made him a better man but you can see he still isn't perfect, I think of Awakening as him having second thoughts and doubting himself, which may be why he joined the wardens, to seek the support and friendship of the Warden.
If the warden continues to support him then he no longer doubts himself and becomes a family man.
I agree, I think the point of Oghren was to show that he was a stereotype and Dragon Age was about going against some of those tropes. Because of this Oghren was hated by everyone around him. I would even say that Oghren may have been a dwarf stereotype but he wasn't a stereotype in the story. If that makes sense. lol.
However, he did have his reasons for drinking. Losing Branka, no one wanting to go into the deep roads to help him, et al. I do like that he calms down at the end of Awakening. I practically took him everywhere with me.
Varric is cool and I considered him Hawke's friend and i took him everywhere with me as well but he seemed a bit too perfect and less flawed. There were times I felt like the friendship was forced. He was just meant to be cool Varric and I guess you're meant to click with him no matter what. I had a good time with Varric but I like the flawed Oghren just a bit more than him.

Varric, he's so smooth and he's hilarious in those times you can have him talk you out of issues.
"That's the viscounts secret elven love child!"
"You don't know about First Enchanter Hawke?"
And he always manages to get it to work.

It's like trying to choose between dirty joke and amusing anecdote. Both make you laugh, but for very different reasons.
Not sure if I could decide in the end but surerly, my favourite quote would be one from Oghren, while sneaking into Fort Drakon with Zevran.
"Zevran: Look at us, we are twins! Not identical of course, but twins nonetheless...
Oghren: I'm the pretty one."

This. Maybe it's narrator bias, but Varric seems like a flawless character in DA2. I hope that in Inqusition he becomes a well-rounded character flaws and all. Maybe he'll be an anti-qunari racist and won't be viewed as do no wrong fan favorite. Dude needs some depth.

Ohgren is annoying
Varric is just a short human who has no opinion about anything. He is there to stroke the player's ego. Just like Garrus and Tali in Mass Effect.

DA dwarves are still short, bearded, and live underground. Changing their personalities doesn't make them more original. I did however like the fact they weren't all jolly and honorable like the stero types in d&d worlds. In every D&D game I play I always have my token dwarven brute in my party, it's just hard for me to accept them as anything else. My favorite scene in DAO was the feuding contenders for the crown's guards murdering each other in the streets, I was expecting more of that in DA2...but instead we got Varric.
Varric lacks a beard, in exchange he got golden chest hair.
