Both.
Too bad they can't mate, a dwarf with beard and chest hair = perfection. Let's hope Dragon age 4 remedies this. ![]()

I don't mind Oghren, but I got kind of creeped out by some of his banter.

In-Game Oghren
In "real-life" Varric......Oghren's funny to watch but his smell and troubles with authority would get old pretty quick.

Oghren by far, best companion in the series by miles. But I like Varric too

Varric is a decent guy, but I never understood what made him so remarkable that everybody swooned so much over him.

Oghren is a dwarf if their alcoholism, blood lust, and so was treated seriously.
Varric is the anti-dwarf being beardless, social, artistic, and a bowman.

Oghren, by far one of the funniest characters, hope he's in DAI, would love to see if he can beat Iron Bull in drinking, I believe he will, you know a human walks into a bar,... hahahahaha, fall's down drunk asleep, that was just fantastic

Varric is more my style. I love personalities like his a lot.

I'm not too keen on either, since I feel there was an intent to force them both into a fan favorite role (they failed with Oghren, succeeded with Varric), instead of letting the characters grow popular naturally.
But I digress. Varric wins that contest by miles.

Varric. Thought he was a likeable character and good companion.
I really couldn't care for Oghren. I felt like he was invented to make Orzammar less dull.

I love them both a great deal.
Oghern although a bit of perv and a drunkard, once you talked to him and got to know him he is kinda of a big softie and a very emotional guy. Which is why he probably drinks alot. I may be alone in this but I am glad he came back for DAA, his banter with sigrun was funny and you got to know him even more than you did in DAO.
Varric is a great friend and really nice to have around, the fact that he is gorgeous doesn't hurt either lol.

They both have appealing qualities. Oghren is a great comedy sidekick, but Varric is a much deeper and more complex character. If I had to choose one, I would go with Varric, as he offers a lot more story potential, but I will always have a soft spot for good ol' Oghren.

While Varric is one of my all-time favorite DA characters so far, I can honestly say that only he of this pair is what I would consider to be forced on the player. As I generally save Orzammar for last going across Ferelden, I can pretty much go through the vast majority of the game without ever hearing Oghren's voice. His appearance in Awakening is a bit goofy though.

Varric.
Oghren is okay, but I like how Varric breaks the Dwarf stereotype mold.

Varric.
Oghren is okay, but I like how Varric breaks the Dwarf stereotype mold.
It's interesting, because while Oghren is basically a subversion of the fantasy dwarf stereotype (drunken warrior with axe), Varric is actually probably more of a dwarf stereotype within the DA setting itself (politically-savvy rogue). Varric is probably the quintessence of what a dwarf in The DA Setting is.

I never touched him in Awakening. He just pushed all my buttons and never recovered from my ignore list.
I see people saying Oghren is a stereotypical dwarf. But he's not. He's a drunk. Dwarves are hailed as stout warriors who an handle their stout ales, not for being drunken slobs who get so hammered they can't tell a man from a woman then stay in that state of mind for as long as you know them.
Oghren is basically an exaggerated version of the stereotype. He's what Gimli would have been in the LOTRO movies if Adam Sandler had directed them and played the part of Gimli.
