Varric vs Oghren

Varric, Varric all the way. He isn't my favorite character, but I find almost nothing to dislike about him; he is just a buddy to everyone.
To this day, I've never kept Oghren in my party past the gates of Orzammar. The moment we step out and he says "Whoa, the sky" I skip the conversation then boot him from the party. Sorry Oghren, I just don't like your sense of humor.

I disliked Varric the moment I saw him. I'm surprised someone said Oghren looks more like a human midget than like a dwarf... that's compared to who? Because Varric is, I suspect, a deliberately constructed anti-dwarf. In my opinion, to go from one extreme of a cliche to the other extreme, where you purposefully create mirror image of that cliche, is a forced attempt at being original and a cheap move. I prefer the sincerity of the first cliche.

Varric is actually a pretty solid dwarven stereotype - just in DA. In DA dwarves are generally politically-savvy rogues who fight from a distance through backstabbing and strategic alliances. Varric is pretty loyal (at least to Hawke and his other friends) but he very much fits into the mould of what dwarves are and how they're supposed to act within the DA universe.

Varric and Bianca. Almost at the end of DAII, they are very strong if you put the attributes correctly.
Oghren is a good and funny companion, just it.

You have a point, when I come to think of it.
But if we agree about this, then Oghren automatically becomes the very opposite of the dwarven cliche, in the DA universe, doesn't he?

I agree, your not bing original changing personalities of the dwarves if your still using them for your world.I disliked Varric the moment I saw him. As a dwarf born on the surface, it's not strange at all to me that Varric is the opposite of a dwarven cliche. I wouldn't really say he's the exact opposite though, with his ties to the merchants guild and love of drink. ![]()
I think my general apathy towards Oghren has less to do with him being a complete cliche to more of just not finding his character's comedic approach very funny, to me it felt like they were pushing it way too hard to the point where it was overdoing it. I will say I did like his final speech before fighting the archdemon though. It's rare we got to hear something like that from him.

Funny enough, though, merchant guilding and drinking aren't dwarf stereotypes in Thedas. Well, the merchant part is for surface dwarves, but not for proper Orzammar dwarves.
As for Oghren's character... he was just repulsive.

Varric has the talent that a dwarf would - politics and powerplays - but he's not a dwarf in the ways that define dwarves in his world, because he's very much free from tradition or from its hold over his people. Just compare him with Bartrand, who was more stereotypically dwarven in DA.

I love both, Varric most people have a good idea of who he is. Oghren is hard to get a good grasp on, but what really defined Oghren for me was what he said to the guardian in the urn of Sacred ashes quest.

I really didn't like Oghren much, he was okay at best but I never had him in my party except when you had to have him. Varric is alright, I do prefer him to Oghren but still not that fussed on him and rarely took him in my party.

Well sinc ei loved DAO more than DA2. Oghren was the closest to me even in my time of need. He helped me slayed the archdemon.
I actually prefered his companionship that with Varric. I always had him in my team together with Wynne and Sten. Awesome pair.

Oghren all the way baby, he's a dwarf's dwarf, always visit Orzammar first so I can recruit him ![]()
Varric is okay, but he is a bit too much of an anti-stereotype for my tastes, plus I'm kind of disappointed he seems to have taken up the designated dwarf slot in the companions line up for DAI.

Yes, me too.

But if I have to choose between Varric and Oghren - I will always pick Oghren. I love this guy - he was so funny in DA:A. Drunk Oghren is the best.
Varric is a great character too - but I'm still sad that he won't be LI for dwarven ladies in DA:I ![]()

Oghren, because his banters with Zevran made me laugh. And his drunken come-on to the Warden in camp made me laugh. I agree with those who said Varric was "too perfect" in DA 2 and also I hate the game telling me who I or my character is supposed to like. I only find that acceptable if I am playing an established, named character whose personality and desires are not shaped by me (like Bigby Wolf). I dislike Liara and Varric both because of their games' bias toward them. Their cheering fanbases make it worse because I feel that is only encouraging the developers to favor the characters even more.

I like them both for different reasons Oghren a bit more personally and Varric from DA 2.
I very much dislike the generic Varric in Inquisition..
Wow I can't believe this thread is still going, I haven't posted here since pre launch. I decided to go with Shadow of Mordor since it looked less like a capcom Japanese game with it's oversized flagpole like weapons. Most importantly no vile acts of homosexuality were committed either.
Strange while i disliked Inquisition. and i agree the agendas are pushed a tad hard but..
I hated Shadows of Mordor with a passion, its insanely repetitive and after killing about 50 orks i uninstalled it was that bad... The female skin on the protagonist and male dude in the cut scenes was horrific as well ![]()
It's one game i wish i could get a refund on..
