Varric even if liked him much less in dai oghren while quite stereotypical in dao had his moments in dao in daa they pretty much destroyed him not only by reseting CD and removing bond with the warden but also by going all they way into stereotypical drunk.

Team Varric.  He seems like a guy you would want to sit down and have a beer with (and not have to worry that he will get so drunk that he might pee on you like Oghren) and just talk about...things!

I like Varric. In a way, he's probably the most down to earth and reasonable character in all of Dragon Age. I think that's why people call him "perfect" though, in fairness, it's not that he's perfect, it's just that he doesn't have an huge irrationality on certain subjects, unlike many of the others.

 

Oghren was a bit of a running character joke. Not much depth to his character once you've played through the game once with him in your party.

 

So Varric gets my vote.

You can tell a lot about a gamer by dwarf companion he picks. I wouldn't have the surface born pu$$y Varric in my line-up.

Oghren was good in Origins, but then something terrible happened in Awakening. He lost all his charisma and became obnoxious. 

Varric is written to be likable, so he is polar opposite to Oghren, also thats a minus for me. Out of two I prefer Varric. But really I would take Sigrun over them any day.

Oghren. Varric doesn't have a beard, lived on the surface and isn't drunk constantly. A pathetic excuse for a dwarf.

Varric has the advantage of having been with the player right from the start of both games he's in. Oghren showed up mid to late game for most people in Origins - and I think people have already made a solid party composition by then.

 

I like both. I liked Varric more in DA2 than in DAI, and I liked Oghren more in DAO than in DAA.

Another point for Oghren, he's from a time when Bioware cared more about making interesting, even if offensive, characters than spoon-feeding the SJW crowd their daily dose of politically correct pablum.

Varric for being infinitely more useful in a fight.
