How would you get by in Thedas?

At first I was going to ask, who would you support in terms of factions in Thedas, but then after listing the majority of the ones I knew I figured that it seemed to boring, so i decided on this.

Just to throw ideas out there, Thedas does seem to have opportunities, maybe because the world is still being defined in contrast to our own. As far as I know safe work is in the minority, while dangerous work is plentiful. A few ideas.

Join the Grey Wardens, they are always looking for recruits because the Darkspawn never stop making more Darkspawn, and their life expectancies tend to be not very long one way or another.

Become a Templar, I don't know if you have to pay a fee to try and join or not but i don't see why more young men and women don't become Templars if they have no prospects. You get 3 square meals a day, shiny robes and a decent education, and thanks to Alistair we know kids from poor families become Templars as well, as he mentions both groups hated him.

Beg to join the Circle even if you aren't a mage. Assuming you can read Thedasian script grab a copy of the Cradicumcadob and tell the First Enchanter how fascinating it is. Maybe because you lack magic you can become something similar to a Tranquil and make magical runes and items.

Join a Mercenary Band like the Blackstone Irregulars, joining the military or the city guard sounds like it takes a certain level of pull or money, but if you can manage to get a sword or a knife or two, you could probably join a mercenary group. I mean the Blackstone Irregulars were lending money in exchange for forced conscription.

Become a Scholar, assuming you can recite much of Thedas history from your head, you could hire yourself out as a Sage to some rich lord to teach his brats history, and script.

theres plenty of labor jobs, farmer, miner, dock worker, message courier. if you really lacking on work you could always go to the Qunari for purpose. if you don't mind slavery you could go to tervinter and become a slave trader. or go to antiva and join the crows. considering how many dragons are in the series, you could choose to become a dragon hunter, but that job is pretty dangerous. you could go pirate and attack ships on the seas. you could always become an adventurer and explore all the ruins and magical places of thedas looking for treasure, and selling off the location of these places. you could always try to apprentice yourself after some craftsman or artisan.

- If I were born a mage I would be a supporter of the Circle, but also of Circle reform. Staunchly against the decision to rebel, I'd likely resent being forced into conflict with the Templars and would seek a way out of that (going it on my own) as soon as possible.

Were I born in Tevinter, given a somewhat sordid youth, I would have been very successful I believe.

- If I were born in the majority, I would likely have lived a simple life.  Probably a farmer given my current profession (horticulture).

In Ferelden, I would have fought against the Blight.  This might lead me to soldiery  but I'd go right back to farming provided I survive.

In Tevinter I would have been the perfect little slave - until I could secure favor with another Magister to kill my current master.  Sure, it might not work out, but death is preferable to slavery anyway.

I'd probably try to figure out a way to become a Chantry Brother.  Perhaps if I learned how to use weapons I would be willing to become an explorer like Genetivi, although I would not risk traveling alone.  I'd only follow that path if I could have a Templar escort or maybe tag along with some adventurers.  Being an actual Templar sounds like it could get kind of boring if all you do is stand around inside one of the Circles.  Even if I could secure a more active role, I wouldn't willingly expose myself to lyrium addiction considering the symptoms once you become "addled."  That just doesn't seem worth it.

Mmm...I was a soldier for a good bit of my life, first in the public and then in the private sector.

Guess i could do that again.

Mercenary it is.

I could never vary from my assigned path. I could never be other than what I am meant to be. To accept and succeed, or deny and die. Glory is clear and defined. If I were in Thedas I would be...

City guard, merc, bandit...The second oldest profession in the world: violence for hire. Never a shortage of work there.

Something like this. Depends how much of my 'me' anachronistically carries over.

I mean, if it was more of just a 'you wake up in Thedas and are able to speak the language' kind of deal, that would be totally different. I'd probably go to the Templars and try to teach them how to build an effective police state or something. Being a curious interview subject for life by Chantry Scholars would be a distant second.

I'm going to go home and research how to make black powder right now, just in case I get teleported to Thedas, so that way I will have a magic solution to the Qunari problem.

In universe, you'll have a Qunari solution to the Qunari problem.

You remember those logic challenges in school about what you would keep with you on a deserted island (or raft) out of a list of materials?

A friend and I once tried to do that in regards to time travel. It was... less than inspiring, actually. We both were the sort who know lots of things that couldn't necessarily be useful to ancient time periods (like electricity and computers), while language barriers alone would have screwed us.

Even if that was all well and done, we had real concerns about how free we could actually live to be in ye old days. Whether assassinated by jealous or rival 'smart people', or tortured for knowledge we didn't know, we were probably going to end miserably.

Or you will have another Qunari problem: they send assassins after people who might reveal the black powder formula. And considering that such a discovery would not remain a secret and they have spies... Yeah, you might actually trigger an invasion. They'd try to conquer the land before that particular technology got widespread.

Alternative idea: steam engine. Steampunk for the win!

Honestly, I'd probably try to find a way to send me back to the real world.  I prefer indoor plumbing and air conditioning to magic and dragons.

A scholar, a brother (Imperial preferably, but depending where I was born), a servant, or just a content Circle mage if I had magic.

This is assuming I'm not Dalish, an underground dwarf, or Qunari at birth.

If I go from real world to Thedas, I'd probably just go to the nearest town or village and look for whatever work that doesn't involve bounties, hunting, or dragon slaying. Or die from some plague.

Well I'm currently going after my bachelors in nursing and I have an engineering degree. If we put that in thedas terms I wonder if I could work as an alchemist. I'd actually prefer healer but the only healers I know of are mages. Now if I was born a mage I'd most assuredly studied the school of creation both as it interest me and because it'd let me make myself useful. If I could make myself useful to the right people I could insure I'm never stuck in the circle.

Though I'd hope I could actually do some research rather then just making already known potions. I've wondered for example what happens to a plant if grown using lyrium tainted water or what affect would it have on mice. Perhaps I could acquire a small amount of raw lyrium and see what types of plant life will grow in its presence.

What would you do if you were born castles? Go criminal, join the legion of the dead, make for the surface be glad Behlen is king?

I would most likely die. I'm not fast enough to run away from the dragon, not healthy enough to survive the plague, not smart enough NOT to argue with Qunari, not large enough to argue with Qunari, not... Well, you get the trend.
