I could become a scholar, yeah. Teach noble kids and have a torrid affair with a handsome seneschal.

Or I would bumble into one of Thedas' many rusty spikes, get tetanus or a strep infection, and die because all the healers are locked up and I'm not important enough for Flemeth's time.

Being that I'm an Aspie and I've spent the better part of my adult life trying to figure out what I can or want to do in order to get by in life, I'd hope to end up in Qunari-controlled land. Seriously, when you have little to no idea of what you want to do with your life, having someone else figure out what role would suit you best is a godsend!

If I end up somewhere further south, like Ferelden. however...well, I'd be screwed, wouldn't I?

I'd join the Templars or another order of knights if I were in the position to. I'm very fit and did Kendo (Japanese fencing) for years, so that'd be by far the best option.

If I were unlucky enough to be born a mage, I'd join the Circle or try to become a personal advisor for the royalty. Joining the Gray Wardens also comes to mind.

To get by in Thedas as myself, I have to know myself first.

So what am I ?

I am studying to be historian of science and technology. I am working on my masters in history of science. I have a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering with History as a minor. Plan to do my PhD after I am done with my masters.  I can speak four languages quite fluently (Malay, English, Tamil and Chinese) and plan to learn a fifth one, either Francais or Deutsche, just for the fun of it. My ambition is to either be a professor or a consultant.

Personality wise, I am a INTJ and I appear to be aloof and indifferent. I prefer to be in peace, read, think, do research and teach.

So in all probability, I would be a Circle mage scholar who works as a mage researcher and tutor to the apprentices. That or I would be a Circle mage who works as an adviser in royal court somewhere and give the noble kids some teaching lessons.

As for race, not sure really but it is a swing between elves and humans.

In fact the character I would resemble the most, would be Finn with the exception that I am fit. I do long distance running.

Cheers.  B)

By the way, it is good to see some anthropologists around. May I ask what kind of anthropologist you are training to be, BabyFratelli ? Bio anthro / physical antro or cultural anthro or linguistic anthro or just specialize in archeo ?

Dragon cultist. Most definitely dragon cultist. Providing I survive long enough then, I'd tame the dragons, ride the dragons and establish my own personal theology based entirely around enormous draconic beings (not the Old Gods) which may or may not exist. I'd be the Aegon of Thedas!

Of course, that's a largely impossible scenario so realistically speaking (depending on how I get transferred to Thedas) I'd either die or live a very uninteresting life as a peasant, a not-very-devout brother in the Chantry or perhaps a mercenary/soldier. Nothing special.

If I wasn't a mage I'd probably starve or freeze to death. I might be locked up for talking crazy about the "real world."

Yes, there's quite a few of us, you can call me Elli.  ^_^

I'm double majoring in Sociocultural Anth and Archaeology, but I tend to err on the side of social.

I could never vary from my assigned path. I could never be other than what I am meant to be. To accept and succeed, or deny and die. Glory is clear and defined. If I were in Thedas I would be...

... you'd be thrown out on your ass by a mage and two elves?

No. He would join a Society, where it is guaranteed they will care for your physical Well-being while also providing you with a clear Path in Life, that will most likely not involve dangerous Fighting (as we are all Human and the Qunari will not make a human a Warrior when they could have a Kossith instead). They also have the best "Healthcare" for lack of a better Word and the strongest Military Stucture (compared to other individual Nations). Their Society really only sucks if you are - a Mage or - value Freedom of Choice in Terms of sexual Partners and Procreation (Note that the Qun has nothing against romantic Relationships!), Career Paths and Religion over the various Advantages Membership of the Qun has.

I do not value these Things over the Advantages of the Qun, especially in a very hostile and rather barbaric World as the Rest of Thedas appears to be (the Conditions there are at most comparable to the high middle Ages, maybe the Renesaince in Tevinter).+

So yes, if I do not manage to strike a fair Deal with some Demon that isn't an ******* and end up in a perfect Mind World for all Eternity then I would probably try my best to reach Qunari Territory and convert to the Qun. Unless I'm a Mage. Then the Demon is really my only Option - although Circle Life doesn't seem too bad compared to the Life of a Farmer or Street Urchin that I would be in the worst Case.

Can I be a Desire demon? No?

Then I'll live the dream an become a woodchopper that eventually dies when a tree is actually alive and hits back.

I'd be a scholar, and writer of fiction. I'd have to pick up some sort of fighting skills (rogue class) if I had to do some traveling, because a little road smarts with books marts will likely save me from bandits and idiots.

If I'm a Mage, learn Blood Magic, get a boat and crew through Blood Magic, after some Pirating head to Tevinter.

If I'm just your average Shlub, leave the Alienage, get a crossbow, raid tombs, donate Gold to the chantry.

If opportunity was that easy and common, I don't think Thedas would have poor serfs, peasants, farmers, slaves, or any sort of working class.

I think the majority of people, just don't want to deal with the tough stuff, while the games don't represent the common day to day aspects of the common man in thedas, based on the type of medieval fantasy it seems to be inspired by I would think most are to sick or feeble, just unaware, or scared to go outside their comfort zone. Also like you said, some are born into their roles already, farmers, slaves, and serfs are usually born right into their positions.

Still this topic was actually about What If You were transported to Thedas, how would you get by?

I'm working on getting into the medial field so I'd like to think I'd be a mage that specialized in healing. I'd probably an Isolationist Circle mage.

@DRTJR:  It's interesting to note how much of a better human being you seem without magic in your two examples.

I'd never join the Wardens, that seems like a pretty bad job and a poor deal. Not only is there the chance of fatality when joining, spending my life fighting darkspawn for some order and then dying too early in the Deep Roads does not sound appealing to me.

I'd rather avoid the mercenary life if I could, it seems a pretty brutal way to make a living.

Templar would be an option if there was any way to avoid the fighting, as would scholar or non-mage in the circle. Unfortunately, with the whole mage-templar conflict and the demon/blood mage business, I think scholar is the only possibility that would remain as I prefer professions where there is not a pronounced risk of me dying.

I'd probably be a Chantry scholar. My real life skills wouldn't apply very well to the more dangerous work. I have too many allergies to camp outside for long stretches of time and can't even go near horses. I wouldn't mind being a mage in the universe and be a teacher.

I may also be a weaponsmith/armorsmith or merchant.

I'd go Templar, they get to smoke the finest dust in Thedas, easy access to all the pretty little mages, and overall it's a simple life.  You don't have to worry about paying rent to your local Arl, or pay protection money to your local criminal organization.

And throw me into Inquisition time line and the dust you smoke makes you even stronger, Red Templar sounds like a good life.

With my real life skills being traditional archery, physical training/sports and using a broad variety of weapons I'd join a large and professional band of mercenaries / the army to become an instructor for trainees.I've been told that I'm naturally good in teaching people and that I have the necessary aura of authority.

I'll be an elf. Even if I'm not a mage, I'd still want want to go to the circle. It's certainly a safer option than working for a noble/humans.
