I've made a huge mistake (maybe)

So in my desire to be done with the mute warden, I skipped over DAA and went straight to The champion. By the way, I'm enjoying the story more in DA2, but i'm only at the beginning of Act 2.

Anyway, I want to know if I did make a mistake in skipping over Awakenings? I want to be as true to the story as I can, but something urged me to go on to the 2nd, since I had never played the 2nd before.

Did I make a mistake? Should I start over and continue with my warden through awakenings and then start a new game in DA2?

Please advise. :)

Thanks

Well, I'm a big advocate for doing things in order (OCD), but there aren't a ton of quests you're missing out on. Here are the things I can recall that you will miss by skipping Awakening and using an imported DAO Warden (although if you use one of the pre-built world states, you can still get some of these quests. It depends on which world state you use.):

You won't get the quest that is a result of saving Amaranthine or of saving Vigil's Keep (you would only get one or the other, but there is a bug that allows you to get both).

You won't get the quest in Act 3 called "Finding Nathaniel." You will get "Fool's Gold" in Act 2 instead. I prefer the "Finding Nathaniel" quest because you get some extra sibling interaction if your sibling is a Grey Warden.

I think you MIGHT miss out on a little banter with Anders in Legacy (I think) where he mentions Sigrun, a character from Awakening.

Also, Awakening gives you more insight into the relationship between Anders and Justice, as they are both separate characters in Awakening, instead of the weird abomination they are in DA2.

That's all I can recall that is directly tied to Awakening, so it's up to you whether or not you want these quests and this extra info/insight. :)

I don't think DAA is a great bit of content. The story is ok-ish. The grafted on strategy layer is pretty well worthless and the additiona of runs added the worst crafting feature I've ever seen. It would give you more background on Anders and Justice and the difference between Anders then and the new Anders in DA2. You aren't miss much.

FWIW I thought DA:A was more fun than DA:O.  DA:O just felt like a massive grind at the end and the combat was terrible (playing on Nightmare difficulty...not difficult, just stupid).  DA:A managed to avoid the stupid part for the most part.

But I preferred DA:2 over both.  All three had major flaws, though.

Good. I don't feel too bad about missing out on Awakenings. I do like to be true to the entire story, but I had such a difficult time maintaining interest in DAO (sorry, i know) I'm enjoying 2 much more.

Thanks for your advice!!

If you had difficulty maintaining interest in DA:O (like me) then you still might like DA:A (like me) but it's hardly the end of the world to miss it.

It's not the end of the world to not have played Awakenings, although you might learn a bit more about Anders, Oghren? and Justice as well. I would, however, strongly advice you to play Legacy and Mark of the Assasin, the dlc that is tied to Awakenings. Especially Mark of the Assasin is really, really great, I find. The story splits in two at a certain point where you have to choose how to proceed.

In truth I hated DA:A because it was always so buggy and it annoyed me how often I had to exit the game and go back in when things got super laggy (it would have been finished so much quicker if I didn't have to do that so often). If I wasn't such a lore junky and wanted the full story and quests in DA2 I would avoid it all together. Granted I would avoid all the DLC for Origins (Which I actually only do Awakenings and Witch Hunt -- and I have yet to see Witch Hunt actually effect any DA2 changes)

I think you MIGHT miss out on a little banter with Anders in Legacy (I think) where he mentions Sigrun, a character from Awakening.

All depending on whether or not you did Awakenings, you have two different banters (this may also be effected on whether or not you recruited her too).

If you did: You get the banter where Anders will actually remember her name and comment about her personality.

If you did not: You get the banter where Anders will mention meeting a girl from the Legion of the Dead once. But he can't remember her name

Also in the Legacy DLC all depending on choices made with The Architect changes dialogue when confronting the Wardens (I can't remember the lead Warden lady's name) and they talk about Corypheus. Anders's dialogue will change depending on the choice The Hero made.

I'm not sure if you lose out on other party banter, like for instance banter between Merril and Anders if you imported a Dalish save. I know there are two different banters depending if the Dalish Warden lived or was killed defeating the archdemon. Like I said though, I don't know if doing DA:A effects this or not.

So, you're not really losing out on anything in DA2 skipping over DA:A. Now in DA:I, that another question entirely. But with Keep, it won't really matter anyway.

You get a bit more of a understanding in Legacy if you played Awakening (not as the character, but as yourself) however you do get a bit of dialogue. What are the imported defaults for that though, is it made a deal or killed?

All depending on if the Hero sided with the Architect or killed him, Anders's dialogue will change when you confront the party of Wardens.

If you sided with him: "Even the Warden-Commander in Amaranthine was willing to make a deal with the Architect. Who knows what arguments this emissary made?"

If you killed him: "I told the Warden-Commander in Amaranthine not to make deals with darkspawn. I guess these Free Marchers needed the same advice"

And those are only if you side with Larius.

There is also some other dialogue before you choose who to side with. But I can't remember how they go and my internet is too unstable today to bring up youtube to look for a video lol

EDIT:

Okay, found the dialogue that Anders has before you choose sides.

If the Warden sided with the Architect: "Don't do it, Hawke. The Warden-Commander made a deal with one of them. We still don't know the consequences."

If the Architect was killed: "Don't do it, Hawke. The Warden-Commander killed the last of this sort. You can't make deals with darkspawn."

Play through without. First. Then go back, do Awakenings and enjoy the new stuff.

Note: DAA does have the best appearing Darkspawn in the series, IMO. If they would all look this way for the remainder of the games, I would be content.

Also, DAA allows for Epic builds for up to 35th lvl, I believe. Not all are the greatest Talents and Spells, but some make for some extremely sweet gameplay.
