In my current run, I plan on using Leliana because of lock pick skill. I never used this character for combat much and cant figure out how to build her properly. I suck as a rogue so I have no clue what to choose. Please. Anyone? Help? I don't know what to do with her.

If my character is an archer, I make Leliana a dual-weaponer. If I am not playing an archer, I make her one. Put most of her points into cunning and dexterity.

Which stat is best for an archer or dual-wielder leliana? What does cunning exactly do?

Leliana
Second specialization: Ranger

1. Enemy: Target rank is Elite or lower --- Use: Scattershot
2. Enemy: Target rank is Boss or higher --- Activate: Summon Bear *
3. Self: Any --- Activate: Song of Courage
4. Enemy: Target rank is Elite or lower --- Use:Arrow of Slaying
5. Enemy: Target rank is Elite or lower --- Use:Critical Shot
6. Enemy: Target using melee or ranged attack -- Use:Pinning Shot
7. Enemy: Has high or medium armor rating --- Use:Shattering Shot
8. Self: Being attacked by a melee or ranged attack --- Use:Crippling Shot **
9. Self: Being attacked by a melee attack --- Use:Dirty Fighting

* If specialized as a Duelist instead, replace with Activate:Dueling. It can also be replaced with Self:Any --- Activate: Summon <summon name>.
** If Leliana is given the Repeater Gloves instead this tactic can be replaced with Self: Any --- Activate:Aim.

Give her 18 Strength and 30 Dexterity, put the rest of her points into Cunning. Giver her The Harvest Festival Ring in Honneleath so she has the 20 Strength needed for Tier 7 Light Armor.  Giver her the Lethality talent so her bow damage scales off Dexterity and Cunning instead of Dexterity and Strength.

Cunning increases armor penetration and Mental Resistance.

I prefer Leliana as an Archer; Cunning of 22, WILL of 20-30, STR of 20+, 34, or 38 depending on Armor desired, and remaining on DEX as a rule.

If used as a DW, granting higher CUN and taking Lethality can be useful in substituting for STR for dmg. CUN also is good for Armor Penetration and Mental Resist. Personally, I prefer to skip this line, and utilize higher STR for increased durability.

I usually make her an archer, since either I'm a DWR or Zev is.  Since her personal quest gives her her very own bow, it makes sense to let her use it as well.  I usually build her in a similar way to what Elhanan described, except I usually build her dex into the 30s initially, giving 2 points dex to 1 point cunning.  Then, after she gets the bow, I start filling out her cunning and willpower to take advantage of bard buffs.  Once her cunning and willpower are in the 20s, I give one point each to dex, cunning, and either strength or constitution.  On harder difficulties, she doesn't last long with a constitution of 12, and the battledress of the provocateur and felon's coat both have strength requirements of 20.

Dabrikishaw's tactic set looks good.  I especially like placing scattershot at the top.  I never had any luck with animal summons and got tired of looking at bears standing there watching combat, so I go with dueling for a 2nd spec and assassin for a 3rd.  The harvest festival ring is a must have for one of the rogues in your party.

All of my animal (Ranger) critters fight right along with their summoners. I like spider the best. You can hear him creeping along behind you when you walk :D

The only problem I ever had with the bear is him getting stuck behind something because he is so big.

My problem might be that I'm using an archer as a ranger, and thus am frequently out of melee range.  I just went back to an old playthrough fresh out of Lothering so I'll try ranger spec with one of my dual-wielders and see what happens.  I'd really like to use that spec, just haven't been able to make it click.  Thanks for the insight.

I think with advanced tactics, you can also set up your summoned creatures. I'll be playing a bit later and will test this using an archer.

Personally, I do not place AoE abilities and spells in Tactics as a rule; prefer to use these manually instead of losing them early, or causing FF damage and inconvenience.

I like to make Leliana a DW Rogue.  At least she seemed to out DPS my last sword and shield warrior.   I'm not sure how much cunning she needs for lock picking but I'd go for that and Dexterity.  I like armor penetration myself.

Strange. Every time I make either Archer Leliana or my Archer Warden a Ranger, the critters always surge forward into battle and attack things, whether or not their summoner is within range. My current character is a S&S DPS warrior, but I've been using Leliana as my Rogue and made her an Archer/Ranger/Bard. Usually her summoned animals and I are running at the enemies and attacking them together, while Leliana shoots things from a distance.

Have never used Ranger as a specialization, either with a NPC or as the Warden. And I oft leave Bard if utilized to Leliana, as the final song on that tier fixes the singer to one location; prefer not to have such a restriction on the Warden.

^^Yea, the first time I used that "song" was in final battle and Leliana just stood there singing on the palace steps instead of fighting :(

The Assassin specialization works well with DW, so I would recommend that. Also, make sure to max out the top line of her DW tree (Dual Mastery, I think) because then she can wield two one-handed swords, which increases her damage.

Leliana owns the game being an archer, but if you're already an archer; I'd advise to put her on dual dagger with disable/set traps utility. Why? Archers are usually not a target for most mobs in DAO but. . hordes are a different thing they hit from everywhere. Having Leliana set up some Leg traps or pin traps could help your squishy archer from dying plus being dual dagger she could deal some damage better than anyone besides your dps.
