Anyone here a speedrunner of video games, or someone who watches speedruns?

I'm not a speedrunner myself but from time to time I'll catch a speedrun being performed on Twitch, as something to pass the time.

Amazing how people find ways to complete games in record times defying all sorts of logic

As an example, Cosmo(a popular speedrunner) has recently broken the World Record Time for a Speedrun of The Legend of Zelda:The Ocarina of Time by about 20 seconds, finishing the game at 18 minutes, 10 seconds, 36 milliseconds.

Live version of the speedrun- http://www.twitch.tv...right/c/4703125

Commentated version of the speedrun-

Find speedruns at http://www.speedrunslive.com

Lets talk about how you feel about them, if you watch any, any that stand out to you, etc etc

Speedrunning is fine. It's simply a challenge some people take other than they've done everything a game has to offer. I don't know why some people make a "thing" about it. No one speedruns through a game (like in your example) on their first playthrough. I myself have never done a speedrun of any game. I don't pursue any of these type of challenges that some people make for themselves. Castlevania and Dark Souls have loads where people create challenges based around not healing throughout the playthrough, using certain weapons only or even speedruns where no healing is allowed whatsoever.

Dear lord. I love the idea that there are songs for that game longer than the World Record Speed Run, hahaha

I don't mind them.

I read somewhere that an individual was able to complete Fallout 3 in 49 minutes. This was without the Broken Steel dlc.

Someone posted on the old forum of his speedrun playing ME3 on insanity in about 4 hours.

I've dabbled a bit in Speedruns. My latest was Shovel Knight, at 1 hour 17 minutes:

Part 2, Part 3

I do watch speedruns very often. The absolutely largest database to find them on YouTube would be SpeedDemosArchiseSDA. They've done virtually every game you could imagine. I saw the Ocarina of Time one above a while ago, that's a level of dedication that surpasses the competition. This guy spent years along with others figuring out the right tricks/glitches to make it work.

Some gamers find speedrunning off-putting, because of the frequent glitch exploitation used by speedrunners, but I am emphatically not one of those gamers.  I've dabbled in it myself, and I would do it more often if I didn't suck at games, but I still enjoy the heck out of watching a good speed run.

The definitive game for speedrunning is probably Super Metroid (which is incidentally one of my favorite games of all time). Here's a four-way speedrunning race that gives you a sense of how intense this can get:

I was able to do a few of the tricks these runners use to break the normal sequence of events (such as the mockball trick first seen at 24:16, which is used to skip one of the mini-bosses), but at the end of the day, I just don't have the skill to get anywhere near a good time by speedrunning standards; the best I ever got was 1:06 of game time (which is probably more like two hours of real time), whereas the best players can beat the game in a little over 45 minutes of real time. But hey, there are worse things to suck at, right? :)

I'm not much for watching videos of others playing, speedruns or no.

I'm all for watching other people play games, especially if its a game I can't play or can't convince myself to play.

Ex- I don't have much fun playing Minecraft, but watching Lets Plays and such in it is awesome.

So with speedruns, its often the case.

Sometimes I get into this speedrun mentality myself and try to plough through the game quicker when I feel I'm not making enough progress, but most of the time I try not to rush. Never bothered watching any speedruns since I didn't find them entertaining. If I have trouble finding some item or location in a game I usually just look up a guide. But yeah, Let's Plays are more to my liking than speedruns, tbh.

I've only spedran two games before. Wind Waker and Ocarina of Time. I've replayed both of them since their releases back in 1998 and 2002. I'm a major sucker for Zelda games. In all honesty, if you added all my video game hours in my life thus far, Zelda games would probably take up about 50% of those hours. (Put about 100-150 hours into gaming every 14 days btw.)

I wouldn't mind taking up the challenge of breaking the record of speedrunning Wind Waker if there is one tbh. I'm confident enough.

Only interested in watching speedruns of certain games, I only really watch my friends' streams. I also stream from time to time, but it's mostly taking my time and playing the game with the occasional goofing off. Booze is usually involved.

Edit: Forgot that I spedran Duke Nukem 3D once before.

I rather just watch people play a game the normal way with commentary than use some crazy exploit to jump through a door in the Deku tree and end up in Ganon's castle.

I would totally watch to see you attempt to break the record for Wind Waker, hahaha. I assume the original? Because the HD remake has a separate WR list.

Definitely the original.

And I would totes own that record. Really wouldn't mind attempting to beat it. If I ever get around to streaming it, I'd let you guys know tbh.

Aces. Cosmo in the OP doesn't hold the World Record but his record for Wind Waker is 4:27:53 and for the Remake 4:26:42

I'm looking for the actual World Record though

Ya know what another game I wouldn't mind speedrunning? Perfect Dark. I've literally been playing PD for about 14 years now. Played it with my brother when growing up and still play it from time to time now. On both the N64 and 360. But I still prefer the N64. Best console ever.

I'd love it if Steam could acquire PD, but that's most likely never going to happen.

Edit: Record on PD speedrun is just under an hour.
