Tend to watch a few speedruns every now and then. Mostly about titles that i've played myself and it's really for some very easy entertainment. Genuine good speedruns usually have something within them that impress me and it's not so bad to get impressed from time to time

I almost require commentary/talking with chatters on them.

I find speedrun efforts mildly amusing here and there, yeah. Pretty amazing talent and dedication involved. I'd never do one in a million years, though. Saps the soul out of the reason I play games, personally.

In other words, I will never obtain the Excalibur II in Final Fantasy IX.

That requires a story.

Which part? I'm sure I can whip something up regardless.

A bunch of inane ranting at the very least.

Excalibur II in IX

Ohh.

So yeah, there's this weapon in this treasure chest, I think it's a treasure chest anyway, and it only appears in the final dungeon if your clock time up until that point is below twelve hours. I think it's twelve hours. There's a lot of "I think" involved when Jeff Zero discusses game mechanics. But you get the gist.

And anyone who knows anything about Squaresoft's big-project console JRPGs, especially from 1997 onward, knows that asking someone to complete one of their behemoth games in less than twelve hours is the equivalent to asking someone to complete the Mass Effect trilogy in fifteen. It's like telling someone, "here, there are a gazillion" -- oh hey, autocorrect didn't do anything about that word, this is legitimately the first I've discovered it actually exists as a word -- anyway, "there are a gazillion lines of dialogue you're going to have to cycle through, in those quaint little things they call text boxes, and a considerable number of character animations, and more random encounters than you can shake a Professor Oak at, and dungeons galore, and so much content you're skipping." You're just running and running and running and resetting when you run into too many monsters or a boss battle took too long because you dared to scratch that itch on your left forearm.

And in the end you're obscenely underleveled and mad props for just surviving, but here's a sword with disturbingly high attack power, have fun with the final boss.

Here's another run that I like a lot: If you thought that running Dishonored or DX:HR without killing anyone was difficult, you may want take a look at this.

My approach to speed runs is somewhat similar. I'm interested in them from a technical standpoint and I watch the occasional speed run video just to see how these gamers accomplish these amazing feats but at my core of I'm a gamer who is more interested in the narrative in games than I am the gameplay mechanics, it's a bit depressing for me to watch these gamers skip dialogue and cutscenes, it feels like they are butchering the gameplay experience.

I think certain games lend themselves better to the speed run experience than others, for example Super Metroid. Super Metroid is probably the only game I have ever played where I was determined to finish it in as little time as possible. Back in 1995/1996 ( at the peak of my gaming skill ) I was able to beat this game in around about 2 1/2 hours ( very slow in comparison to a lot of gamers' times but that was with me collecting as much stuff as I could without the aid any sequence breaking techniques or ever learning how to wall jump ) and the feeling of accomplishment was enormous at the time.

I think the reason I find speedruns so fascinating is because I do the polar opposite;I go out of my way to make my game playthroughs last as long as possible to get as much as possible out of them.

:o  Why haven't I seen this thread yet??

I like to maximize the time I spend playing games that are narrative-heavy as much as the next person, but I consider speedrunning a way to get more out of a game I've played a hundred times.  Why not make it a few hundred more?  To me it's another way to play the game - not necessarily better than vanilla gaming, but a new way to look at a game you love.

Usually I do speedruns between game releases to keep occupied, so I've been really focused on learning Skyward Sword lately, with the occasional OoT run.  Although I'd like to pick up one of the Silent Hill games.  Has anyone seen the hilarious Aglaophotis glitch from the first Silent Hill?

For anyone that's interested, the upcoming AGDQ 2015 schedule can be found here.  Carcinogen's Resident Evil 3 run got accepted!
