Why did Bioware make love interests unattractive?

I suppose that after this whole alien romances in Mass Effect it shouldn't suprise me. It seems that from now "unconventional" appearance will be standard in Dragon Age series too.

When it comes to female characters we have manly Cassandra (smashing gates like Hulk, with scars and shorthaired), bald Vivienne (with this "thing" on her head), Sera (looks nice although "round shape" of her face is probably intentional for the sake of unconventionality, and she's shorthaired of course) and Josephine (avarge looking, shorthaired, with unconventional mole).

Even so female characters look definitely more attractive compared to male cast. The only conventionally looking male is Cullen (although it is unsure, there is at least one screenshot when he looks like seventy years old grandpa). Then we have Dorian (I am happy with the end of this whole playersexuality thing but this creepy mustache makes Dorian unromanceable character anyway), Ironbull (yes, muscles are good thing but it seems that good things must be balanced by "unconventional" traits so in this case baldness and his face will do the job...well I think that Bioware overbalanced it a lot). And there is Solas (bald, skinny, wearing giant underwear, reminds me of old-fashioned Nosferatu).

It seems that Bioware decided to make some kind of list of "unconventional" traits and redistribute them among companions. And of course male characters are more "generously endowed" with these features. Female companions were more lucky but you won't find competition for Morrigan or Leliana here (or Triss Merigold  ).

Why is Bioware going this route?. I see 2 possible scenarios:

1. Bioware wants to make companions more "ordinary" - I don't think people are playing games like Dragon Age to experience mediocrity of daily life. In real life we won't be Inquisitor, won't have our own castle, won't save the world. This game is a little escapism. Is it so weird that when it comes to romance I would like for LI to have both interesting personality and be good looking?

2. Bioware is planning to get rid of romances in future games - romances in DA:I probably won't be as much popular like they were previously. It may now seems like waste of resources but in future Bioware will be free to say that players are not interested in this aspect of their games. There are also rumors about multiplayer "invasion" of DA universe. And when multiplayer arrives in any game, singlplayer is systematically reduced. Romances may be its first victims since it is pure singleplayer apect.

Of course I may be wrong here. I will probably still try some romance storylines in DA:I even if times of Morrigan/Alistair romance passed away.

There's no conspiracy here. Physical attractiveness is a matter of perspective. Many, many, people find the people you're talking about extremely beautiful/sexy/adorable/desirable/etc. If you don't find any of your options attractive, that's a shame and you may have to not romance anyone or perhaps wait until we see them in more detail, get to know them better, so that you have more of a full idea of what they're like.

Sigh, this again? How many threads need to be started on the looks of the characters? ^What Baby said.

Can these threads just be auto-locked at this point? We've seen enough of them already.

I have it saved to copy and paste. Just slight editing depending on the thread. It saves a lot of time.

I doubt they are moving to get rid of romances, they inexplicably draw attention and fans despite their overall poor quality, not singling any particular one out, across the the board they are a firm "meh".

I think the LI's look more "plain" or whatever is a combination of two things

1. Personal choice, self explanatory, different strokes for different folks and all

2.  Deliberate design for some reason, here I think your first point is more valid than your second

I wish I could copy paste where I am, I cant right now, and ugh!  Why so many of these threads...I wish mods would just start closing these down as they pop up.

This game is a little escapism.

So are pretty much all video games.

I find Josephine sexy and i guess there are a lot of men who could appreciate Cassandra (I don't because she brings me bad memories, i don't mind her "batman" face) and Sera is too delicate for my tastes.

If i was roleplaying a top gay character i would go for ironbull's ass (literally) a passive one will preffer Freddie Merc... errr i meant that Cody Rhodes looking Dorian, but i agree totally with you on nosferatu elf.

In other words i don't see any uglishness... is like the yellow teeth issue: is part of the times we are playing

I find it amazing to see this thread posted two spots above one about a supposed ugly character and six spots above a thread about the exact same subject.

Nope, new thread.

ugh another one? I thought the real world was shallow enough, now we have to bring that prospective into video games? Geez people who make these threads need to grow up

I always found it a bit paradoxical that people care so much about their measure of attractiveness being met that they post new threads all the time, yet don't care enough to look on the front page and see the two to four already up.

If this is an insight on how little these people take into account external perspectives is a conclusion I'll let people arrive at on their own.

What do you have against short hair?

Does conventional attractiveness require long hair?

OP might never had grown long hair before to know what kind of pains it is. Ladies tell me often they want to chop their hair off cause it annoys them usually, it takes less time for short hair to brush and go than long hair.  Which is what several say to me, and they prefer putting their hair up so they don't have to mess with it. Guess, some of those guys that hate short hair don't talk much to women or care what they feel?

Not to mention how long it takes to dry it. Ugh. Even with a blow dryer, it takes a while.
