For anybody that has shale in their party:

Does he make a good tank?  What sort of skills does he have?

Thanks

I did not give him much of a chance, but he was not the tank I expected. He seemed more like modeling clay then rock.

He's pretty versatile.

He has tanking abilities, support abilities and both melee and ranged attacks.

He tanks for me, pretty well too. He has plenty of AoE abilities that help.

The one thing i wonder is how his threat scales. He doesn't wear armor, and enemies focus on targets with heavier armor according to the game. Still, at level 7-8 he is pretty good. He has two taunts!

Depends.

He has three "states", which are basically active abilities.

-One for tanking
-One for offense
-One that emits an aura, but immobilizes Shale (increases health/stam/mana regen of allies)

Each state can unlock various other abilities that help him fulfill the intended role better.  And as he levels he can get more skills for each role, allowing you to specialize.

Overall I'd say he's probably one of the strongest party members in the game simply because of his versatility.

To get shale you'll stumble across a merchant at some point or another (explore the world map) who will give you the location of the village where shale resides and a control rod to awaken him with.

I'll never know since I thought he sounded like an arogant jerk when I when I found him. That and I'm playing a goody two shoes type so the fact he MAY have killed his last master did not sit right with me so... I killed him.

His armor/defense never gets high enough to tank as well as say..Alastair but his tanking abilities (Regeneration Burst and Bellow) are extremely powerful and makes up for it.

His DPS is off the charts, the first tree he gets def. makes him into a powerhouse hitter when combined with good fire crystals.

Never tried his Ranged tree because it causes friendly fire damage.

Tried out his maxed out Stone Aura, very powerful support (more powerful than all the bard songs combined). However, he can't do anything when in Stone Aura so you are down a party member.  Might be useful if you have a ranger in the party that can fill the missing party member with an animal (who will then be even stronger with the aura)

Shale is the most versatile of characters. Not exactly good at buffing, range, or tanking, but her great damage output makes her about the best choice if you want to have your two close combat npcs share the pain of tanking. Which I loved to do. Sten and Shale were a force to be reckoned with.

I love Shale, in a platonic, non-chafing way. the damage output can get pretty high with enough strength, switching out crystals to have the best resistance and damage types for each fight can help tremendously, the close combat abilities and the two ranged skills (though the first ranged skill takes an eternity to fire) are pretty nice and do some good damage, and it has some sustained buffs and a good starting constitution.

For me, Shale has proved the best Tank so far- as ITSSEXYTIME says he has a lot of different ways to function. This time around I'm playing with only one melee (Shale), rest is ranged and/or mage- so Shale is the only one taking damage usually. And he can take a LOT, just give him a good deal of Constitution, not important for him to deal damage. I find him the best melee fella in the game so far. But then again, haven't tried everything. Big game... thanks Bioware!

When you combine Shale's quake and a dual wield rogue's whirlwind on closely clustered enemies it may be the best aoe option in the game since there is no friendly fire.

I had been using Alistair as my tank for my second play through but decided to try out Shale for the deep roads section so I could bring Oghren for dps. But towards the end of the deep roads (after making a poor conversation decision) I decided to reload and switch Alistair and Shale. I was very surprised how much weaker Alistair seemed compared to Shale. Maybe I am not using Alistair properly, but my experience was that Shale could take a whole lot more punishment.

I think Shale is a great companion. Some of the conversations between her and Morigan are hilarious.
