To whom it may concern (looking at you marketing team)

If there is to be a next Dragon Age game, and if said Dragon Age game is going to have love interests, perhaps you guys should change the way you go about revealing the LIs.

Perhaps you guys don't realize how many people are interested in the romance content.  It is kind of a big deal, since no other game developer includes romance content in quite the same way that BioWare does.

Here are some tidbits for next time:

Many people like to plan their characters in advance and would like to know who they can and cannot romance with their chosen character before they play the game.

If you are going to reveal 1 LI, then  you should reveal them all and stop stringing people along.  The fact that fans of character "X" know months in advance that they can romance said character, but fans of character "Y" have no idea if they can romance "Y" only breeds frustration, discontent, and other hard feelings. Better to reveal no LIs than to reveal some but not others.

Anyone else with suggestions, feel free to chime in.

I think they should play it close to the chest and not reveal anything, that way when the game releases we can find out for ourselves organically by playing the game.

If that's how they want to do it, then fine.

But to reveal some but not others?  I don't see the point to that.  What determines which LIs are worthy of being revealed and not others?

Considering we are still 3 months from release and we know all but 2 romances I'd say they are doing good. You still have plenty of time to plan, re-plan, and re-re-plan your characters.

True, but stringing things along does more harm than good.

If they are trying to produce hype, then it isn't working. People here on BSN are already the hardcore portion of the fandom.  It only produces frustration from fans of the characters that are left behind.

I dunno... you may find out that you don't even like these characters once you meet them in the game.  I think it's better to plan your character independently and adapt to the LIs when you know more about them.  Basing everything on a couple paragraphs and some screen shots seems like a recipe for disaster.

I'd prefer an all or nothing LI reveal.  Someone mentioned in another thread that Bioware might clarify what types of romances are available (bi, gay, straight, pan, ace, trans, whatever else is included) and leave it at that so we're aware that we have options but not who they are, which sounds pretty good to me.  I know I'd still be hopeful that certain characters would be available to me, but at least it'd help eliminate the anxiety and jealousy that comes from watching LI spots being taken up one by one.  It's sort of like gym class in school, waiting to be picked for a team and watching everyone get picked but you.  Or musical chairs.  (oops, my social anxiety is showing :P)

I completely agree that we don't need to know everything about all the LIs, but when you look at the way they were revealed it's obvious that it could've been handled much better.  These events may be a little out of order but it should be close enough to get the point across.

  • Cass/Cullen confirmed as LIs at major convention
  • Intermittent Iron Bull romance hints everywhere
  • Sera confirmed as LI (on twitter?), sexuality revealed almost immediately on Heroes of Cosplay
  • Dorian sexuality revealed in interview, confirmed shortly after as LI in Facebook comment
  • Cass/Cullen sexualities finally revealed
  • Iron Bull sexuality and LI status revealed simultaneously at a convention
  • Scribe Lady confirmed as bisexual LI in a Q&A, name revealed later
  • Varric confirmed as non-LI through a Swedish publication

For the sake of both fans and Bioware employees' sanity, perhaps revealing all or none of the LIs would be a safer choice for the next Dragon Age game (please let there be another one <3 <3 <3)

I'm sorry, but this doesn't even qualify as first world problems.

The way they revealed romances is bad, and their PR team should feel bad for withholding information for this long.

I am just happy they are revealing them before the game is released. I think all this complaining is a bit much, we can't all get everything we want.

I think overall the marketing is wayyyyyyyy better than DA2, I'm talking trailers , interview , etc...

Now the romances reveal have been all over the place.

DA2 was better , we had a thread saying these are the LI options , and that was it.

I ran out of likes but I wanted to say I agree with you, there's been a lot of great marketing for DA:I.  The trailers, demo videos, interviews, funny Jessica Merizan/VA videos, etc have been fantastic and I appreciate all the work that's gone into them.

Given the train wreck that was the Mass Effect 3 build up and Dragon Age 2, I'm not surprised they are going all out on this

There is no structure. Some characters get way too much focus, while others get neglected.

Revealing LIs without revealing their sexuality (Cassandra and Cullen) was also dubious.  I knew better than to get my hopes up, and even created a thread asking for clarification on their sexualities when it happened.

The race gating is another monkey wrench thrown in.  There is no clarity, which amounts to uncertainty and in some instances annoyance.

Point is, if they are trying to get people hyped and excited, this way isn't working.

yeah. is not a big problem, but surely it would have been better a "all or nothing". Is not a very importante matter, I agree, but surely is a little annoyng. The Varric thing was quite disappointing, much more so because of all the time people have waited to know it.

years of hopes and waiting. It would have been more merciful knowing at the start, just like with Cole and Leliana.

a Joker 2.0.

I agree, I wish they would have done an all-or-nothing approach.  The LI reveals have been very slapdash and most of them seemed to be accidental leaks.

Confirming set sexualities without any mention of how many romance options there are caused a ton of unnecessary angst over how limited the same sex options might be.

Confirming Cassandra and Cullen as LIs but waiting months to reveal their orientation meant a lot of people spent a long time getting their hopes up.

Waiting this long to confirm Varric wasn't an LI when people have been asking for him to be an LI since DA2 dragged that out for no real reason.

I get that revealing the characters gradually has driven hype, and I can get behind that.  But I think they could have approached it better.  Either just reveal numbers (8 total, 2 straight, etc.), or announce the LIs all at once, or have the reveals come at regular intervals.

I agree, the marketing overall has been fantastic.  But it seems like they didn't put much thought into the romance reveals.

Planning the characters in advance isn't the issue.

I always plan them in advance, and I already have 3 Inquisitors in mind. They are not set in stone, and I have no problem changing them. I was just pointing out that some people like to have an idea of what their characters are going to be like and who they have in mind to romance etc. Knowing who is available beforehand would obviously make things easier, *especially* with knowing who is race-gated and which race cannot romance said LI.
