I've excitedly followed every bit of information on LI reveals because I jump on every tidbit of info about the game, because I'm so excited for it.

But at the same time, for both DA:O and DA2, I didn't know who the LI's would be. It was exciting to figure it out during the game. And for the first time, that experience will be lost - sure, my months of waiting for the game have been more exciting as a result, but the game itself will be slightly less.

I would prefer, for future games, if they don't reveal any love interests ahead of time. But if they decide to reveal them, it is probably better if they reveal them all at the same time, that way some people don't feel like they were strung along.

OP - I concur!

I don't like testing the waters to see who is romanceable and who isn't. I like planning that bit out ahead of time to get it out of the way. Romance is a supplemental element of the game. I'm not keen on getting halfway through the game and realizing that I can't romance someone, but could have been romancing some else the whole time. It's distracting. :/

I don't mind being "strung along" tbh.

I suspect they stagger the release of all information largely so that people will have a reason to follow the game up until they actually buy it.

I kinda agree with this.  But like other have said.  If they had revealed every LI and sexual orientation three months ago I would have stopped following the game more or less.  Truth be told the only thing I really care to know before the game comes out at this point is who the other two romances are and who is getting race gated.

My suggestion is don't reveal them at all. I prefer as some others have mentioned to discover who they are in the game. I like the mystery of that and it helps me to look forward to playing the game that much more. I'll be honest, I do not like how romances have been revealed for DA: I. It may just be me who thinks this, but it feels like too much of a focus has been put on romances for this dragon age game compared to prior ones. I think it's the fans and the media who have focused too much on it the most.

I enjoy bioware's romances, but it's not the main reason I play their games, and romances are not the meat of their games. I feel like the core aspects of this game are getting overshadowed by the romances. Seeing people constantly asking voice actors and Bioware developers if a certain character will be a love interest all the time is just silly in my opinion. I'm not trying to bash others for being excited about the romances, but it's just weird to me how this whole thing has played out over the past several months. Anyways, that is just my personal opinion and I hope Bioware rethinks how they handle romances in their future games and how they are revealed or not.

I don't know, knowing that a character is an LI hasn't made me stop paying attention to them.  If anything, I pay more attention to characters like Sera because I have a little more context for who she is now.  If they'd all been revealed early, I think a lot of people would go "great, now I want to learn more about this character who I know I can romance."

Again, I think that situation has been, if not caused, then definitely worsened, by revealing only some LIs.  Since the LI options have been revealed so haphazardly, players don't know when or how they can expect to find out about the rest.  So yeah, some people have been really overly demanding about the rest being revealed, but you can see their frustration, when the flow of information keeps switching between giant infodumps and months of nothing at all.

Having none at all revealed would have been nice, too.  It would have been fun going into the game with no set plan or expectations about the romances.  But since they have revealed most, it's just awkward and kind of frustrating that the remaining two are being held back.

I agree that the problem is that they've told us some options but not all of them. (They're also being maddeningly vague about whether the final two are bi or not, and about the race-gating.) Honestly, I'd rather they didn't tell us about any romances than sit through this all over again for DA4.

But I'm really glad that I found out about Varric here and not while playing the game. With eight romances to get through, I don't want to waste an entire run hoping for something that isn't possible, especially not my first one.

I should have stopped crying into my cider by the end of November. (Maybe.)

They should do one of two Things in this Matter:

1) Reveal all Love Interests and their respective Restrictions at once, so everyone can start planning their Characters at the same Point of Time.

(Because Love Interests are typically a Thing that factors into many a Person's Process of creating a Character they would wanto to roleplay.)

2) Not reveal any Character's Status as a Love Interest.

(This would lead to more Speculation, but similarly, everyone would start from the same Point.)

I think that sexualities should be revealed (as in, there are X straight options, Y gay options, and Z bisexual options, for instance), but not necessarily which characters they match up to. I just want to know that I'll have options.

EDIT: That being said, I think it should be all or nothing instead of some LIs being revealed while others are left in the dark.

I like this a lot because we'd have the reassurance that we'll get a certain number of options while still retaining the mystery and excitement of discovering the LIs in game.  Obviously there would still be a frenzy of romance speculation but being straightforward in the approach ("this is all we're revealing romance-wise, end of story") could help to eliminate some of the bitterness.

Yes, they could have stick with the "every race/sexuality will at least have two options".

I would be ok with this.

But revealing companions are good to build up hype and a fandom. So I don't think they could realistically go that route now. If people prefer not knowing anything about the companions, it's up to them to go on a media blackout.

I'm actually more for this.

I don't mind them releasing core companions (DAO - Alistair, Morrigan, Leliana and Sten [those available from the end of the intro, ie lothering], DA2 - Varric, Avaline, bro/sis, DAI - Varric, Cassandra and maybe Solas or Vivienne, whoever we get first), but leaving the later companions as secrets or just not talking about them beyond seeing them in a scene or two in trailers would be cool.

Who the LI's are should be lips zipped, we can find that out as we go. Surprise!

I also very much love the hidden/secret companions.

^^ This. People who want the companions and romances to be a complete surprise should simply not follow the game's news.

I think that I would have preferred to get only numbers and not the who's.

If they are going to announce a LI give the orientation at the same time, no four month delay. Although in my opinion a mistake was made with Cass/Cullen I don't think they really intended to string people along. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong but I just think that something happened that they really didn't intend.

I would have preferred a more organized approach to not only the LI's, but the companions in general. A complete companion profile package. So even if they want to pace out the reveals, at least the reveals would be in an organized fashion and done on a reliable timetable.

I really enjoyed the voice actor vids, and the writer insights on the character. Then add to that the small profile blurb, a nice high rez in game screenie; LI status and availability in one professional package.

And then stick with the plan. It's been all over the place and haphazard at best. I mean to learn abt Sera's orientation from a random thing on Heroes of Cosplay? Then to have to track down devs to confirm stuff? No, just no.

I would prefer if they revealed all the romance options together, in a batch.  Including sexualities, race-gating, etc details.  I am a roleplayer.  My methodology for structuring characters and creating them to inhabit a world prefers knowing the details.  Knowing the details can help me set up potential interesting stories that I'd like to see.

It's not that we don't want to know anything.  We'd just rather not know things about the events through which we'll be expected to roleplay.

I'd like to see game marketing consist of two parts:

1. The Mechanics.

They should release detailed mechanics, including complete ability lists with calculations, requirements for learning them, non-magical equipment stats, and examples of every UI element.  There should be enough there that we can plan complete character builds.

2. The Setting.

I'd like setting lore and the current state of affairs, akin to a campaign sourcebook for a tabletop game.  It should contain everything about the setting a character who lived there would know.

With those in hand, I would know whether I would enjoy the game.  But nothing else is necessary, or even desirable.

I would agree, but I'm not sure this is a wholly practical solution. Would you not want to see these mechanics in action prior to release? That would necessitate seeing party-based combat in game, which means revealing companions (or including stand-ins for the companions in pre-release footage, which would just confuse and mislead people).

You could ask for details with no accompanying footage, but I'd be wary of any developer doing this. Words can be twisted and content that can be talked about but which isn't ready to show can easily be cut. Bioware adopted a 'show don't tell' policy with Inquisition precisely for this reason. I'm afraid companion reveals seem like a necessary evil to me.

I loathe this show don't tell approach.

I don't care who the companions are. I don’t care what they can do (as long as they're governed by the same rules as everyone else - that's why I want the rules released). But if BioWare's actually concerned about that, they can just give us greater control over the companions' skills and abilities (something I usually mod in anyway).

They can't cut core mechanics without fundamentally changing the game (or just ruining it), so I'm not worried about that. And cutting game content doesn't change the details of the setting - it just means we didn't get to see that part.

Basically, I want to know everything I knew about their D&D and Star Wars based games (because of my relevant background knowledge), but nothing about in-game events.

BioWare seems unable to stick to a plan. Remember Followers' Friday? They basically stopped doing that the moment they started with it. Or how about the dev diaries? I just don't understand why planned marketing is so difficult for BioWare to keep up with time management being such an important part of development.

I must say I don't agree that all companions should be introduced at once. I also don't believe companions need to be introduced months in advance so people can play their playthroughs. I just doubt anyone truly needs months to plan to play a game. However, I do believe that when they announce a companion they should pretty much immediately mention their sexual orientation and if they are race-gated. Right now there is a good chance that one of the companions we know the sexual orientation of is race-gated and that is just not cool. It will probably once again lead to people being disappointed. Marketing should be about positive reinforcement instead of it being a negative.
