Aren't mages sorta vampires when they use blood drain and mana drain?

Being vampires and having vampyric qualities isn't necessarily one and the same.

Yes, lets add Vampires as the enemies of werewolves because Thedas needs more tropes. Or just adding Vamps period. No need to make every fantasy setting have the exact same elements as every other setting. There aren't orcs in Thedas (Darkspawn are similar but distinct) and they are already adding ogres/giants, little kobold like creatures were in MotA. There is literaly no need for vampires and they wouldn't add anything to the setting (ancient mages already fulfill the old evil category, blood mages fulfill the human sacrifice role).

Well obvious they would add "something" as it seems some people in this thread would like vampires. I'm not saying you're wrong as I also feel like there a not a necessity. In all honesty it would be preferable that the enemies in dragon age are all unique to this universe. I'd like to see an element of vampires in some in game enemies, however in reality the hunger demons fulfill this role.

Indeed, the blood sucking aspect (life feeding) is taken care of by Blood Mages. The Hunger/Uncontrollable Instinct is Hunger Demons. The dreamer/unreal aspect of vampires could be handled quite nicely by Dreamers, depending on how they are implemented. The themes presented by vampires are already present, so to my mind they wouldn't add much. Sure, some people like vampires and want them just cause, but I prefer settings that are unique. That's why I dislike the little kobolds in MotA, or the orge/giants they are adding. I always thought of Thedas as being a world populated by sentient beings, and all the problems the world has result from that. Unlike the DnD setting (name?) where random monsters permanently plague roads, zombies rise from crypts everywhere just because, and most of the problems present in the world aren't caused by people, they are caused by monsters. (And Chaotic Evil is the stupidest alignment ever, no-one would ever identify with that, or evil in general).

I prefer the more 'mature' setting of Thedas where politics cause more problems that evil monsters.

You may disagree, but I'd like the idea of someone important to the politics of Thedas being a person who has been possessed by a demon for a long time, but the difference being this demon is somewhat subtle with some form of Agenda (Not sure what that agenda would be), and by a long time, I'm talking most of someones life. I'm curious how that would play out. Not any justice type spirit.

That could work since spirits are necessarily evil. They want the 'sentient being' experience since most spirits cannot truly comprehend emotions. Spirits can easily fall into grey areas, and since it looks like the Elder One isn't a human/elf/dwarf/qunari this time around anyway a spirit is no worse than an Old God.

I do prefer most politics/nation managements stuff to be handled by actual people, but having someone occasionally possessed or something could work.

This kind of fits into some recent thoughts that have been going through my mind. Tis' a bit of topic, but I'm really struggling to decide if I want my cannon Warden to become queen alongside Anora or let her rule alone and if to have Hawke become a viscount or not. I king of like the idea of potentially my previous characters being somewhat involved in inquisition? I really hope the inquisitor gets heavy involved in the politics of Thedas.

Aren't the blood sucking abominations enough of a throw back to vampires?

Sigh...hunger demons within a living host are known as "vampires". Seriously people, read the codex more often.

I suppose there could be some innate similarity between vampires and werewolves in the lore since there's the bit in the werewolf codex about its cause possibly being rage demon possession.

Oh you hadn't heard? Ah, well, let's just say there's a reason he's called Cullen

:P

As if stomaching that character wasn't already difficult enough.

Define Vampire in this case. The brutal hunters of the night? Or the whiny angst sparkling freaks that causes Bram Stoker to roll around in his grave?

Honest opinion is that I didn't much care for the werewolves in Origins. They are an exotic creature that didn't really fit in the world of Dragon Age. I get the same feeling when I think about vampires. I enjoy them in the Elder Scrolls games, but I find it hard to picture them in DA; perhaps even more than the werewolves. The DA world just seems more grounded than other fantasy and more political.

I wouldn't be opposed to the idea of adding vampires, but I would hope it is done better than the werewolves were in Origins and perhaps not make them stand out so much like they do in Elder Scrolls. They are supposed to blend with the crowd, and it's hard to do that with glowing red eyes.

As long as they're not sparkly, I wouldn't mind Vampires in Dragon Age.

I'd be fine with the vampires mentioned in the codex. Actually seeing those would be interesting. However, I'd prefer any vampires to be beastly. There are plenty of vampires in modern fiction that are really similar to humans, so it would be a nice reversal to have that not be the case in Dragon Age.
