You can pretty much come up with any reason you like for race-gating any character, and that's fine, the problem is when your (and by 'your' it could be anyone, dev or regular player alike) idea gets forced onto other people, that's when you have the kind of race-gating nobody likes.  That's why there's never been Official race-gating before, it's always been left up to the players because if you force your idea of who should or shouldn't be race gated onto somebody else, all you're doing is taking other people's fun away for no reason, everyone should decide that for themselves.  They did away with the race-gating on Iron Bull, and hopefully they'll do away with it for the other two, whoever they are, also, because it's just a dumb idea that takes away fun for no good reason whatsoever.

I think people are getting way ahead of themselves assuming Solas will be a romance option.  What we know about him is he is a hermit that lives alone in old ruins.  Whats to say as soon as the "war" is over he won't want to get back to that. 

 

And what does that have to do with his being an LI or not?

Sadly I doubt they took it away especially since the game is pretty much finished

They should be, they said they wanted to give everyone equal options. Giving humans two exclusive options is not equal options.

They wanted to give the players equal options, player races are a different thing that might not get equal options

I agree, but race gated just brings whole other stuff up. No one would be happy with the homophobic characters, or the sexist characters. "You get an extra romance, but they will make clear they think you are lesser based on you being a woman/gay/ Bi would not be acceptable, and I would have prefered they just stay at 6 instead of bring this into it.

There was a theory going around that when the 6 were confirmed that they were the original romance options for when the Inquisitor was going to be human only (though IB made this theory false IF you want to believe Bioware's PR talk that he was in fact the third race gate) and that the last 2 are ones they added after they added different races. It was a nice theory

I'm really not sure but, I don't believe humans either humans or elves will be race gated. And while it's not balanced they are so much more popular than Dwarves and have the little reason for being forbidden as a romance, sorry Qunari, so I find it difficult to justify removing them. If I had to guess it'd be Cullen with Human, Elf, Dwarf and Vivienne with Human, Elf, Qunari. Reasoning being that Cullen dislikes Qunari after DA2 and Vivienne is too concerned with appearances to be with anything that isn't capable of taking to a ball (as for Qunari it's entirely wishful thinking and her horn hat, I mean who wears a hat with horns unless you see horns as aesthetically pleasing?).

I think Cullen will be the Sebastian of the game, so an exclusive for female humans only. Vivienne for human nobles cause she's a snob. So humans get one more than the others and the rest pretty equal with at least 2 options for each orientation. 

 

Male human options - Cassandra, Vivienne, Josephine (str8) Solas, Iron Bull, Dorian (gay/bi)

Female human options - Cullen, Solas, Iron Bull (str8) Vivienne, Josephine, Sera (gay/bi)

Male elf/dwarf/qunari options - Cassandra, Josephine (str8) Solas, Iron Bull, Dorian (gay/bi)

Female elf/dwarf/qunari options - Solas, Iron Bull (str8) Josephine, Sera (gay/bi)

Gonna put this out there, I could be wrong but I still want to say it. If you ask me I still think the two race gated options are the 2 that haven't been named yet, that would explain why they are taking so long to announce them. If it really was any of the one's they confirmed why didn't they go ahead and say so when they were announced and get all the backlash out of the way early? Why wait so long that the potential backlash could hurt the game so close to release? And yes some fans take their romance very seriously and one reason like this could cause them to not buy the game, I have seen in happen with past games. Yes I know what was said on Twitter about this but if you have been a Bioware fan long you know to take what they say with a grain of salt, they are notorious for saying one thing and doing the complete opposite. They would never admit that the fan base guessed it right before they even announced it, it would be bad marketing if they did that so when I saw that tweet by Gaider I automatically thought PR talk that's all that is cause Bioware is known for that, they beat around the bush when questioned on something that hasn't fully been confirmed or announced yet.

It's equal in regards to sexualities, not player character races which every player is free to choose from among. Real life groups are represented, not fantasy groups.

Only reason I'm not sure about that is because I have a hard time seeing Solas as race-gated.

Yeah. Solas' voice actor said that we "won't be disappointed" (so enjoy?) That doesn't outright say he's a character you can romance, but chances are looking pretty likely in this regard.

Ever since DG tweet on the subject, I've been pretty convinced we're going to have one unannounced LI be gated, and one announced LI be gated. For those who haven't see it yet, here's the tweet in question:

For me, it's a toss-up between Solas and Vivienne being gated. Vivienne I have an easier time believing to be gated, for political reasons. Solas could have story-related and cinematic reasons for not being available to a Dwarf Inquisitor (say, if part of his romance plot takes place in a dream and Dwarves still can't dream in DAI, then it would be impossible to write a Solas-Dwarf romance arc), but his bio is all about how open-minded he is, and how he doesn't want people to just view him as an elf, so it's a hard sell. And Blackwall is still such a mystery, I wouldn't know where to start.

 

For the announced LI, I think Cullen is most likely to be gated, as he's expressed negativity towards both the Qunari and dwarves in the past. Sera has her nobility thing that could make her unavailable to human Inquisitors (unlikely, as at one point there only were human Inquisitors). Dorian could be gated against qunari, because of Tevinter's war with them, or elves--not because he views them as lesser, but because of the inherent consent issues in Tevinter could put him off. Cassandra doesn't really have something that helps me thinking about possibly gating for her, so I think she's the least-likely announced LI to be gated in that way.

 

So, my top two choices for race-gated LI:

 

Vivienne, bisexual, gated against elves definitely, qunari maybe.

Cullen, straight, gated against qunari definitely, dwarves maybe.

 

That said, I've been wrong almost every time I've tried to make an LI prediction, so, we'll have to wait and see.

Blackwall was very unlikely as soon as we learned about him, he's a grey warden and barring some noticeable exceptions they usually avoid relationships, especially older mentor-esque ones. And that left Solas and Vivienne as the other two options barring Varric, and frankly he was very much wishful thinking.

Well it doesn't help that he was responding to a tweet asking if Solas was a romance option or not

That tweet wasn't PR talk, it from people assuming HE said that the final 2 are the race-gated LIs

The tweet doesn't really tell anything, the final 2 could in fact be race-gated. But nobody should rule out the already confirmed LIs until it's confirmed

[NODS] Oh, I agree, it could absolutely be PR talk. It's just how I, personally, read it. I won't be mad or anything if I'm wrong--I, uh, kinda desperately want to be, the Inquisitor I have planned for Cullen is qunari. And with Sera, it's mostly looking at what's been said about her character, and the only thing that fits is her having a thing against nobles.   Honestly, she's, like, right with Cassandra in that I don't think she'll be gated, but since I can come up with a (bad) reason for her to be gated I always toss it in there.

well sadly out of all of the confirmed ones Cullen has the most against him being gated which sucks really, none of the gender gated should have race gating on top of them as I have said it just seems like over kill to me
