My plan this time around is to recruit Legion as quickly as possible. I really like his character, but I've only ever taken him on one mission before the collector base, his LM.

So, I'm thinking ahead to post-Horizon. I know there's a five mission counter, and/or you have to have 8 squadmates.

Now that I've taken the long way around to the question, do each of the Firewalker missions count toward the mission counter?

Also I think I'll wait until post-Horizon to recruit Kasumi, so her LM will count too.

Yes, each Firewalker mission counts toward the 5-mission counter. 

 

And you only need to complete three of them to finish the story arc: Rosalie (the first mission where you get the Hammerhead), the volcano one (I forget the name), and Prothean Dig Site.

 

The other two missions are just extra missions.

 

So if you plan to recruit Kasumi after Horizon, then you could do the following:

1. Purchase the start charts on Illium and then complete the N7: Anomalous Weather mission for the third Damage Protection upgrade, which unlocks the Hard Shields upgrade.

2. The three Firewalker missions, which will get you the third Biotic Damage upgrade which will unlock the Biotic Cooldown upgrade.

3. Kasumi's loyalty mission.

 

 

Edit: You can leave the other two Firewalker missions (Geth Presence, artifact collection) as in-between missions after you complete Lair of the Shadow Broker main missions so you can get the weapon upgrades faster.

I have completed snow world, volcano world and acid lake industrial world - no sign of Cayce (only a dead O'Loy). The thing is I had a very busy galactic map and now a lot of it is gone. I had to go back and start again because I started friend/foe too soon. I have Garrus, Zaeed, Mordin and Jack and the option to recruit Grunt. Nothing about Thane or Samara. Maybe some will come up thru' talking to crew re loyalty missions?

Nah, you don't need to talk to the Crew to get the Loyalty Missions. Keep doing Assignments (one or two) after that Character's Recruitment and you'll unlock his/her loyalty Mission.
