I think the devs want them being shown in an angle that players will always see them, basically to showcase the art of them. Since players see behind the back, there you go
This is actually pretty close. We put most of the weapons on the back so that the player doesn't have to think about what they've got equipped. In an RPG of this scale it's easy to lose track of things (as we found in early playtesting) so by keeping the weapons visible it's always reinforcing what you've got armed.
The sword and shield is the exception here, as the shields get so big sometimes that they can obscure the sword - that's why it's on the hip (where it's more visible in this scenario.)
