Hey,
What does that have to do with the lore?
The lore does not require the mage to use a staff (and I am sure, that all magic - even small, weak spells, like our auto-attack - can be done without one in DA (it's not Harry Potter, where a wand is needed - except if you are very powerfull and have trained for ages to be able to do some little things without it)...)
I don't hate the staff-animations (using the staff finally does not look stupid - hell, I even liked the DA2-Staff-Animations...but I hate not being able to attack without it (if I don't have any mana left to cast a real spell for example...I mean, say if we get locked up again (prison/dungeons etc.) they will take our equipment and it's bye-bye automatic-attack 
- how very nice - or if we don't have a staff at first (or maybe we do have one, but it just looks crappy and you don't want to use it!)...or you go to that orlesian ball, I don't think you will be allowed to take your staff there (!)...there's many more situations, where you would be without one - and not being able to use your auto-attack then is stupid)
