I have to correct you here: While it is true that viruses can be an issue on such websites most legitimate files do not contain these viruses.   It is an urban myth that simply visiting these sites gives you viruses or that anything you download contains these viruses.

first of all yes, since you are only allowed to make a backup of software you own, so to have a copy before youy buy a copy you are breaking the laws on copyright.
