The 1st time I head the word 'Codex' was in 1st Edition Dungeons and Dragons where there was an artifact called 'The Codex of The Infinite Planes'. I never knew it was a book and there was no googling back then!

It is inspired by sci-fi genre elements.
Just as ME is.
It would be next to impossible to try and pinpoint anything to being specifically ME inspired, especially so because ME is nothing but a giant homage at the sci-fi opera genre. You wouldn't know where the homage ends and where anything truly ME'y starts.
