I hope this is the right subforum for this plea but:

I just finished a playthrough of DAO and I played a female mage who romances Alistair   and gets her ass dumped when he becomes king. Yes I know I should have hardened him, but I hate that conversation post Goldanna because it doesn't truly represent what I want to say to Alistair and furthermore my Warden wouldn't be doing half the quests she completes if she truly believed "people are just in it for themselves". And also how tf is that supposed to make my boyfriend more decisive? Meh, anyway, I get it, I have to say that to him. FINE.

This is all I want. Andromeda, my warden, doesn't want to be freaking queen. She just wants to have her relationship with Alistair. If she's going to have to say certain things to Alistair to influence him to not be a King and to make an evil god baby FINE. Ok ok, I'll do it, for at least one playthrough FFS. Andromeda just wants to be a warden with Alistair. That is all. How can I get Alistair to continue to be a warden and survive the archdemon? Evil god baby + ?

(P.S. Yes, I named my warden Andromeda,  )

You can have your relationship with Alistair (giving him up to Morrigan for that one night) and keep him as a warden.  Just make Anora queen.  She does a creditable job and it frees Alistair to be with your warden (and happy) as a Grey Warden.

If you can't bring yourself to make Anora queen, you have to harden him to maintain your status as his lover and tell him "You're king, no one can tell you what to do".

If you dislike the line to harden him (and play on the PC) I recommend IRS:Alistair by Cmessaz.  It fixes a lot of the bugs in the dialogue and adds some new scenes with your romance with Alistair, AND gives you a more sensible answer for him than that 'everyone looks out for themselves' line (which I always felt was stupid too, so did Cmess).  It can be found on Nexus at this link.

http://www.nexusmods...age/mods/1166/?

You should check out Cmess' mods page there as it contains some other nice/fun mods you can run in the game, you may find the "Cullen romance" one of interest since it adds to the female mage experience by adding an extra scene, and restoring some broken dialogue with Cullen (in the Broken Circle quest) AND Jowan (in his cell in Redcliffe).

If you play on Xbox or PS3, sorry, mods aren't going to help.

That mod sounds awesome, I'll DL it today. I actually have played DAO on both Xbox and PC. PC being my favorite version since the mods are awesome, naturally

My canon Warden was exactly the same; a female mage who romanced Alistiair, left him unhardened, and got dumped after the Landsmeet. I refused to harden him to preserve the relationship as it would have been totally out of character for her to do it. I actually preferred a sad ending to their relationship anyway. My pc had wishful thinking that somehow their relationship could continue after he became king even though both of them knew it wasn't really possible. She refused to consider marrying him to Anora even though it was the strongest alliance because she couldn't bear the idea of intentionally losing him to another woman. Then she ends up losing him anyway. At this point she falls into a type of despair and volunteers to take the final blow on the archdemon herself to save the realm and because she felt she didn't have much to live for. But then she compromises her duty (as Wynne warned) by urging Alstair to do the dark ritual for his sake; not hers. Great story.

I can share the feels with your Warden!  :crying: . Andromeda chose to commit the Ultimate Sacrifice because while she loved Alistair fully- she knew it was her duty and she had no other reason to live honestly. She's a warden and the love of her life just dumped her to be King so, yep, on with the Archdemon, at least let this warden not be wasted! Rather go out sacrificing myself for Ferelden than drinking myself to oblivion with Oghren in a village tavern  :crying: Oh and Alistair basically asking "what's up with you sending me to the gates instead of with you to fight the Archdemon huh?" Andromeda "you can't have it both ways King"..  <_<

Very sad endings, but sometimes it fits.  I've done a couple like that just to see new scenes and preferred them to how I intended to go in the first place, so I kept them!

I considered doing that but when role-playing there's no way my character could do something so tactfully stupid as leave Alistair at the gate when a Grey Warden is needed for that final blow; regardless of how much she cares for him. If the option was there to knock Alistair out (without mods) and then kill the archdemon with him there I might have done that instead.

Yes, it fits. I just want at least ONE play through where I can get my Alistair and eat it, you know? Just one. haha. Anyway I since I killed the archdemon myself, didn't do the god baby, the epilogue Alistair says, which made me have a tear in my eye, at my funeral that "I always thought we'd be together forever" WTH??? I mean he dumped me to be King. Is this a glitch?

Yes, he still had his love flag up (which is still possible even if he dumps you--it's how you can break up and STILL get him to sacrifice himself for you).  I am unsure if Cmess' mod fixes that line, but you can take it as his regrets for dumping her AND her dying.  The damn post landsmeet is crawling with screwed up plot flags, dialogue bugs and assorted nonsense that IRS DOES fix.  Was so bad the first time I put Anora on the throne solo and he kept referring to himself as king without the mod following the Landsmeet, I had to go back and put him on the throne with her.  Completely blew my immersion.

I hovered over the options quite a long time before I finally answered. I know that it could be stupid (I think you meant tactics vs tact?) but you can use the same rationalization that your heart overrules your strategic warden brain as Wynne warns against. So my warden, she was a walking heartbreak, and she wasn't willing to let Alistair risk himself, and if Alistair is going to forsake love to be King, and explain to us that it's unacceptable and he needs to make an heir, than by the Maker he's going to survive the onslaught. (also my Andromeda is pissed off because guess what, a warden to be King or Queen would just be stupid anyway because we have such a short shelf life soooo  :pinched: )

Even if the pc lets their emotions make them stupid enough to leave Alistair at the gate, the way he doesn't even put up much of a struggle is absurd. In his situation, would you really stay at the gate? You know a Grey Warden is needed for that final blow, and if the pc goes solo it's very likely they'll have to do it. If the pc and Riordan dies before  killing the archdemon then the realm is doomed. And he just complies with staying behind? Realistically, bringing Alistair should be mandatory.

Well, it doesn't make sense that Alistair would let you lead him by his collar from Ostagar on as well . Your warden is a noob, and Morrigan is right about this.

I believe there is an option in the dialogue to say something *paraphrased* "IF Riordan or I don't make it out of this, and the Archdemon doesn't die, we need an ace in the hole to kill it".  Not a great excuse (especially if he's romanced--because my real reason would be protecting him) but it helped me get over the folly of not bringing him along.

Riordan even suggests (when choosing your party) you bring "Alistair and..."  Realistically, it SHOULD be but it isn't.

I actually refuse to do the "mistress" ending. I'm the freaking Hero of Fereldan. I saved the world. I'm not about to be somebody's behind-the-scenes love toy. Not happening. I also am not keen on getting dumped because of "duty," so that's not happening either.

If I romance Alistair, I'm either a Cousland whose noble butt is going to be on the throne beside Alistair, or I leave him unhardened (because then he's happy not to be king), stick Anora on the throne, and Al and I go off and do righteous Grey Wardening together. I'm a sucker for happy endings. :)

I actually like the line in DA2 with King Alistair better on the mistress than the queen.  His response to the Warden's return (from wherever) is downright enthusiastic and shows he definitely does NOT see her as a 'behind the scenes love toy' but rather the love of his life.

But with today's society, I realize I'm probably in a minority here.  I prefer him as a Grey Warden tbh, he's happier in this role (and it shows in the difference between the 2 cameos), and my warden doesn't have to share him with anyone else (even if she does have to give him up to Morrigan for her ritual).

Isn't DA2 bugged regarding a romanced Alistair's comments about the Warden (both mistress and GW)? I have gotten the "old ball and chain" comment about my Queen Cousland, but Warden Alistair acted like my Warden was just his friend. Bummed me out.

I only did the dark ritual once. And I didn't like doing it because I feel like you cheapen yourself and Alistair by doing it because you're willing to essentially create a child and give it up to Morrigan. While I enjoy her character she is not prime mother material and she outright tells you what she wants to do with the baby. And her plans are just plain wrong for the child. I also don't feel like it's justified in anyway except with Morrigan's "survive no matter what" pov- she's a hypocrite in a way because she's possibly doing the whole ritual thing to save her own butt from Flemeth - eh- basically her entire reason for the ritual declares "I'm a horrible mother".

They might be, but I never have.  If warden Alistair is encountered, when he gives Hawke an item (I think a neckpiece?) he says something like, "This was found by the love of my life.  She's always picking up stuff like this." And since it was on my Dalish rogue who unlocked every box I found I had to giggle.

As for queen you get the ball and chain comment (which i took to be his sarcastic wit) but the mistress gets a line *paraphrased* "Oh the day just got better"

Probably but since my warden is always her bestie (even if I don't romance her) I also take part of that motivation to because she doesn't want her friend to die or lose the man she loves.  You can see this in previous dialogues with her before the DR talk.

Doesn't mean I like her USING that love to manipulate you but yes, I usually go the DR route since (selfishly) I want that happy ending and that's the ONLY way to get it on a female who romanced him.

Must be nice to actually get those comments. I'm so jealous. Warden Alistair called my romanced Warden his friend when he gave Hawke the jewelry, so I never got that sweet "love of my life" line. I about threw my controller at the screen. I haven't done the mistress angle, but I fear it would be bugged as well because that's what many people have said. Apparently, for most people, the only romanced line that fires properly for Alistair is the "old ball and chain" line, but it's only triggered because the game recognizes your Warden as queen. He'll give it for any Cousland he married, even if he only married her for political reasons.

Do you use a mod to fix his dialogue so the romance lines fire correctly? I've only played DA2 on the PS3, but I have it for the PC, so if there's a mod to fix it, I'll definitely give it a shot.

I used DA2 Import Fixes by Monochrome Wench for my Dalish Warden import to DA2 to get the correct and very sweet "love of my life" dialogue. (She romanced softy!Alistair, and left him as a Warden.)

I've heard of this mod. But when I researched it, people were saying he will give the "love of my life" dialogue, but that Alistair will act as though the Warden is dead. So it's something like, "This was found by the love of my life, but she doesn't need it anymore," in a sad voice. I've heard it also fixes Zevran who was in a romance with the Warden, but he also acts like the Warden is dead.

TSM, did Alistair act like your Dalish Warden was alive and give the "This was found by the love of my life, but she's always picking up stuff like this" line?

Yep, he talked about her as if she were alive... "It belongs to the love of my life, but she seems to find stuff like this everywhere she goes." (And somewhere Laerwen Mahariel is thinking. "But that's not a good reason to give my stuff away to every shem'len you meet, Alistair!")

(Urgh, I'd forgotten how wooden and awkward the animations in DA2 are... they do that preying mantis head rotation thing and it really creeps me out.)

Sweet! I will give it a try. I assume your game is patched to 1.04 ( I want to make sure patching doesn't effect things.)? :)
