Nuuuuh, he looks like a big baby! No one would take him seriously to run the Inquisition!   And thanks! I rarely catch colds during winter, but as soon as the temperature raises a little, I get sicker than a dog.

 

Oh boy, I love Brosca's mom. And hate her. And love her? At any rate, Happy Mama's Day, dorf thread!

Just for funsies, this bit from the Jaws of Hakkon DLC featuring Harding and Bull cracked me up. No real spoilers.

 

I love her too. I mean, she's an awful person but at least she has her reasons. She's still awful at the end, but at least she stops drinking once Brosca becomes the Hero of Ferelden.  And Happy Mother's day! It's not the day yet in France, but it doesn't matter!

That and the fact that if you made the US as a dwarven warden, he supposedly sobered up, became a Ferelden general, and named his first daughter (or son) after you. I found his inclusion in DAA annoying because it wiped out that ending too (the one feel-good about the US for a dwarf.)

 

I suppose we can headcanon it that he turned himself around after Awakening?

 

One epilogue for Awakening has him survive the battle after he passes out from blood loss after taking on two Ogres to give the others time to retake the courtyard, get mistaken for dead, only to wake up a few days later and be genuinely surprised that everyone is heralding him as a hero?

 

Since that letter in WoT is apparently from before that, maybe that victory and people praising him as a hero, was just the morale boost he needed to turn his life around and make something of himself, so his kid could be proud of him?

The only thing I've found so far is a letter from Leliana to Sketch. Here are the relevant bits.

I had never heard [Tug] say the words, but they were important enough for etching and ink. First, on a handle, hidden:

"The Stone lives beneath Orlais."

I've heard this before, but more as a passing phrase than anything true. And I would have smiled sadly and left it not understood, but there was a second phrase, the one I leave out of the telling. I thought it a detail that got in the way of the greater story, when I believed I knew what determined such things. Even dwarves I trust are confused by it, as the language is not how it is understood today.

"Mathas gar na fornen pa tot isatunoll."

The literal is nonsense: "I'm sorry sacrifice one at my side death..." The last word is unknown. I have heard the first part from strange places, ending instead in "pa salroka atrast." Which is the slightly less meaningless, "at my side find your way in the dark."

It seems to mean: "I regret the sacrifice of my kin, but it means we will find our way home." Which rings as defense of Orzammar's abandonment of Kal Sharok and perhaps of how Tug acted for you when you were both captured. I find that comforting, but I am sure I am wrong. It is too easy, too simple. Tug was not simple. This is something older. It is secret, or it is gibberish.

I contact you now because you think in patterns. Long patterns. Books full of scribbles, building to things I never understood, if there even was something to be understood. Secrets or gibberish. And so I ask, old friend, if there was anything that your way discerned of Tug's way? Anything in your former life that would lead me to who he was? I would treat his memory better.

It also says he was casteless, but Leliana was never able to find out his real name or track down his family. And the letter itself was violently intercepted at one point by someone who wanted to weaken her through her friends.

It's making me more and more inclined to get the book. Sounds like a lot of great lore and added depth and backstory to characters who sadly didn't get enough time in the spotlight (Sigrun).

Aww, thank you! I hope I'm not wearing anybody out. I'm just really eager to talk about all this stuff.

And it's funny that you say that, because this whole book reads more like an investigative report than an encyclopedia (like WoT). I think it ends up making the character profiles and lore even juicier.

How the Deepstalker Came to Be
A common tale said to be originally told by Paragon Ebryan, writer of Songs That Only Nugs Can Hear. Many dwarven tales for children involve deepstalkers.

In a time only the Stone remembers, a warrior named Gason won honor and glory for his house. He won a dozen Provings and defended his thaig against a legion of darkspawn. But though he was bold, Gason was also selfish and unkind, with a temper like spitting magma. He would rant and rage, mock and malign, until eventually Gason's friends turned their backs on him, his house crumbled, and he was cast into the Deep Roads.

There in the great darkness, Gason's anger roared up so bright it blinded him. He snatched up his sword and began to attack the carvings honoring noble Paragons that lined the walls. One! Two! With each blow of his sword, he cursed the Paragons and the Stone Herself in a voice that echoed from one end of the Deep Roads to the other.

But the Stone always hears the voices of Her children, for good or for ill. As the carvings fell in ruins at Gason's feet, each chunk of wood uncoiled, becoming a horrid creature with a maw full of teeth. One! Two! Hundreds rose and surrounded Gason in a pack, devouring him bite by bite before scattering into the dark.

The creatures, which we call tezpadam, stalk the Deep Roads to this day. They can curl of like tiny stones, waiting to pounce upon trespassers as they pounced upon Gason so long ago. And that's why you're not to play noisy games near the entrance to the Deep Roads. They just might toggle you up too.

A poem performed in singsong style for dwarven toddlers.
Veata tezpadam translates to "Stop, deepstalker!" in the common tongue.

Mindless he wanders, all unwary,
Where small dwarven children should not tarry.
Veata tezpadam!
Your eyes are shining, bright and merry.

The quarters' light distant and dim,
Here in the cave he's wandered in.
Veata tezpadam!
How quick you are on silent limb.

Small hands collide with cavern wall.
Upon the ground, a missing ball.

Your brothers hear the high-pitched call.

He turns to see they've circled round,
All grinning at his wimming sound.

As a side note, I love the reference to "wim and wam" in that last one.

Isana means "Lyrium" (literally "Singing stone"), Tunsha means "Dark", Amgetol means "Duty".

 

So, based on all three, perhaps "Isatunol" might loosely translate as  "The dark duty of the stone?" or "The duty of the Dark Stone".

 

Coupled with the loose translation from the letter in WoT2, perhaps the full sentence might mean something along the lines of either;

 

"I'm sorry to sacrifice the one at my side, death in the dark duty of the stone"

"I'm sorry to sacrifice the one at my side, death in the duty of the dark stone".

 

The former sounds like it would be something one might say to honour the dead, while the latter makes me wonder, whether that might be a reference to something involving Red Lyrium, since it's corruption would make it a "Dark Stone"...?

 

Of course, tin foil hats aren't the best headgear when translating?

Either way works, really. If it's "dark stone", it could be Red Lyrium, and if it's a "dark duty" it could be an imperative thing, and since lyrium's alive it could be controlling the dwarves, somehow..? Maybe something to do with the fabled Titans? Arghh, so many unanswered questions!

I really dig the idea that maybe Orzammar and Kal'Sharok's separation had less to do with the impending darkspawn horde and more to do with some kind of service to the Stone. "But darkspawn!!1" is a convenient excuse, isn't it Paragon Aeducan?
