Eh, I don't want them to do that unless it's really a full romance. I don't want an abbreviated, half-hearted one just so they can say "see, now we have a dwarven romance in the game and we don't have to even think of one again for 3 or 4 more games."

A totally valid point Tishina.

Its just that she is adorable....and the flirting..sigh.

DA4 i hope allows me to play a Dwarf from Minrathous who has been trained in the ways of the magekiller and can romance Harding.

That sounds a great game to me :D

Cassandra> Harding :D

The magekiller may be a specialization in DA:4, if we're heading up to Tevinter. I would rather be a dwarven pirate, but would settle for a Kal-Sharok dwarf.  Hopefully, each race can get their own personal story, like Hawke in a way.

I love this so much. Her armor is badass. Ferelden surface dwarf? I guess she head canon that little detail.

Lots of dwarves are born on the surface, and just because we get to Haven by way of the Freemarches doesn't mean we have to have been born there (lots of Fereldan refugees from the blight?)

I posted my dwarf Inquisitors a few minutes ago. I've been tied up in workshops all day (on Sunday, bleh.)

I think Cadash says that he/she was born in Ostwick, when asked by Cassandra.

That had better not be true. My canon for my first DAI dwarf that I'm planning soon is my dwarf was in the Carta during DAO and actually fought the Hero of Ferelden for a few seconds before being effortlessly cut down like all the rest while the HoF was attacking the Carta base to take out Jarvia (they barely survived and they have a 12 inch scar across their chest to show for it), they're an Orzammar dwarf who was born casteless. It's part of their backstory. This... Will ruin everything.

I don't remember that, but maybe... Let me try loading a couple of saves.

Well, you could still have gone to Dusttown and ended up in the Carta after you were born, but let me check (and surfacers are born casteless too.)

And no, when she asks where you are from, you just say you're mostly from Ostwick, not that you were born there.

You actually quoted it (and even "liked" the post) before back on page 245, so I know you saw it... But for a refresher, the full backstory is here in the next quote-

So, backstory idea:

What if my character actually fought the Hero of Ferelden? They were one of the idiots you slaughtered your way through when taking down Jarvia... Except they survived. Barely. Sometimes you can survive sword and dagger wounds, especially if it was a big fight where you'll move right onto the next opponent as soon as an enemy drops and they're not doing any throat cutting to be sure (my warden certainly wasn't the type to do that). They would have been 16-18 at that time, making them roughly between 26 and 28 years on in DAI. I'm not going to pretend my Cadash was some badass back then, they were just one of the dozens of dwarves you cut down with little effort. Because of that, they have a bit of a grudge against them because all they knew of the HoF was that they showed up and killed or seriously injured pretty much every person in the carta because they were one of Bhelen's tools. What's that Dagna? It was a dark time and there was only one light? Yeah, well that light left me with a 15 inch scar across my entire torso and killed friends of mine all for political gain. But still, they do soften up about them after hearing everyone talk about how good they were and Morrigan saying that he's a good person who is a good father and all that stuff. And then (headcanon'd conversation here) Leliana tells them about how one of their ancestors in the body of a golem helped the HoF and was actually the golem they had fighting alongside them in the carta base. Somehow, knowing a living ancestor of theirs helped them do it is the final push that lets them let go of their internal grudge against them. After all, for a dwarf who still does ancestor worship having one of your ancestors help to kick your ass might be a holy sign that you deserved it. And even my dwarf will have to admit that the HoF was pretty impressive, the way they effortlessly took his overconfident ass down in the span of a second was actually pretty amazing when he thinks about it.

You like it? I'm thinking about doing this for my next playthrough, my first male character (dwarf, obviously).

Anyway (bolded so as to draw attention to it after the quote), thanks for that pic. That had me worried.

Good to know. Well, I know that Magister Alexius tells the inquisitor that they're both foreigners.

Well that's fine for my future dwarf. He's right, I am a foreigner... I'm from Orzammar. Orzammar might have an entrance in Ferelden, but it is it's own sovereign nation that has existed since before Ferelden even had its current name.

I wasn't referring to your story, actually. I just meant I was checking on what you actually say to Cassandra, and making a minor suggestion to adapt the story if you did actually say you were born in Ostwick. Fortunately, it's not an issue.

True, but he wouldn't necessarily know more than that you got there from the Freemarches. Anyway, thankfully there's some flexibility there, which is good because I have dwarven IQs born in Orzammar - one born casteless and one who had caste stripped from her. And others born on the surface. Frankly, if they're going to give us so little origin or even contact with our background (a few war table missions really doesn't do it) then I think we should be able to take advantage of the flexibility :P

Yea, flexibility is always a good thing. I guess I'm the only one that really like been born in the Free Marches. I just wish that I knew more about Ostwick, since most of my early fan fiction uses that setting. Besides, I didn't want my third protagonist to be from Ferelden. I actually like what I know about the Free Marches more than Ferelden.

:P

Cespar has been to Orzammar, but not when Brosca was there. My Brosca is 33 at the start of Inquisition, but Cespar is 25.

Nah, I just diversified the birthplace of my dwarves. I also have at least one born in Ostwick, but I admit the lack of detail pushed me into using Dusttown as the birthplace for my fictional IQ.

The game does say you're born in Ostwick in the "origin" card during character creation but I handwaved over that for my Cadash crew. They're from Markham.

So that's where Cespar got the idea from! Actually, the codex might also back up the idea of my head-canon... Not being so "canon".

http://dragonage.wik...,_the_Casteless

"[Player name] Cadash is a surface dwarf whose family was exiled from Orzammar generations ago, for crimes known only to the record keepers in the Shaperate. Banned from their underground cities and stripped of all status in traditional society, many surface dwarves are forced to become part of the crime syndicate known as the Carta, simply to survive. [Player name] was raised as part of the Cadash family, a branch of the Carta specializing in smuggling the magical ore lyrium across Thedas. [He/She] moved from city to city in the Free Marches, working wherever the syndicate saw profit to be made.News of the Conclave shook up the Carta's usual operations, as its success or failure would have tremendous impact on the demand for lyrium for years to come. [Player name] was one of a handful of Carta dwarves sent to spy on the proceedings at Haven. [He/She] was the only survivor of the explosion at the Temple of Sacred Ashes. Rumors that the mysterious mark on [his/her] hand is a sign of the Maker's favor were spread by those who claim they saw the divine prophet, Andraste herself, lead Cadash out of the Fade."

How could my dwarf have been a Dust Town resident and have been born there if the entire family was actually exiled? That's more than caste stripping, that's a complete kick-out just like Varric's family. Dammit, this could still ruin everything!

Yeah the Cadashes were banished long ago and stricken from the Shaperate. But you can headcanon what you want.

Not if direct evidence contradicts it. Others might be able to, but I can only head-canon if it doesn't contradict real canon. Head-canon'ing your Dalish mage is Merrill's long lost sister, okay. Head-canon'ing your qunari vashoth is actually biologically Sten's niece, okay. Head-canon'ing that your Dalish rogue is actually the City Elf daughter of Adaia in a timeline where Duncan never showed up to help and so she failed to Kill Vaughan and had to run away from Ferelden to escape "justice" and was found by the Lavellan Clan a few months after he escape from Ferelden and formally became part of their clan, okay. None of those are actually contradicted, they're okay. Contradicted head-canon... Not so much.

This is terrible.

Hmm, I missed that. Still, they do virtually nothing with your background, so I can't see it makes any difference if someone changes it. It would be different if there was any actual story connected to your background and not just a few random and completely irrelevant war table missions. In fact, I'm a little puzzled at why they'd tie you to a specific birthplace at all since only two points - you are working for the Carta when you were sent to Haven to spy, and you got there from the Free Marches - actually have any remote relevance in game. It makes no sense to supposedly leave things as open as possible for headcannons then gut the obvious possibilities just for grins and giggles.

Eh, just because your family is casteless and was exiled doesn't mean they couldn't have been in Dusttown as part of the Carta when you're born. Remember, you can tell Josephine you've been there plenty of times because it's easy to pay off the guards...

Umm, I just checked the CC and I didn't see a reference to birthplace on any of the dwarf cards during the creation process, just that you'd  "spent your life on the streets of various Free Marcher city-states." I'm not seeing any mention of Ostwick for a dwarf (the only one I know who gets Ostwick specifically mentioned is the human origin.) Could someone maybe get a screen shot so I could figure out what I'm missing?

Hmmm maybe not then. I could have sworn I saw something that mentioned although you were born in Ostwick, your work with the Carta sent you all over the Free Marches. Like I seriously thought I remembered seeing it in the origin card writing and everything...

Maybe you created a human IQ and confused the text? I admit I was surprised people were talking about us being specifically from Ostwick at all, much less born there, because I couldn't remember reading anything about it myself other than that we'd been in various Free Marcher cities...

Whew! Headcannons are safe :P Not that I'd have let it stop me since it would have been pretty irrelevant.

Yep headcanons are safe. I haven't done a human in a long time (like I don't even linger on their card anymore) so I dunno where I got that from

Andy, your Cadash can be from anywhere now until BW decides it doesn't fit DA4 and handwaves it

Okay, head-canon might have an "out". Maybe he wasn't born there but was in the Carta base on business during the attack, got in through some small bribes ? Maybe working out a trade deal or something?

Also, I'm pretty sure the codex says that the Carta didn't really have a surface presence until the HoF broke their Orzammar operation to pieces.
