Tell me a little about how you guys roleplayed your Carta dwarves, whether it was in DAO or DAI.
I must admit I'm not the most creative guy and I tend to do it the most obvious way, hardly going beyond "mwahahaha, I'm an evil criminal!" and "Grrrr, I hate the caste hierarchy!"
I do have one Cadash who could be described as born to and embracing the criminal life, but it's complex and she's less evil than amoral - she sees most of what she was involved in as just a version of the Orlesian game. She didn't smuggle lyrium and wasn't involved directly in any of their more violent activities. She'd been groomed to deal with surface nobles, delicately negotiating the sale of smuggled luxury goods, etc. And incidentally collecting material for blackmail, etc. (while not directly involved in actually blackmailing them.) She was at the conclave exactly because she was their person who did that sort of work (collecting blackmail on ranking chantry, templar and mage representatives.) All of which sets her up to be the perfect Inquisitor in many ways, while she cheerfully lies about believing she was sent by Andraste (she's completely agnostic.)
But I also have a Cadash who was grabbed by the Carta as a child and hated the life, but really never saw a way out. After all, the merchant's guild families are just as caste-bound in a lot of ways as people in Orzammar (which means she was actually more hostile to Varric at first than most of the rest of the Inquisition.) She's completely acculturated to the surface, including being devout Andrastrian (while distrusting the Chantry itself.) She was "muscle," but was good enough at what she did that she'd been able to get the Carta to let her limit her work to guarding caravans, etc. where she only had to fight rival groups and guards (i.e. people who knew what they were getting into.) She'd been picked as a guard for a Carta leader going to observe the Conclave because she was Andrastrian. And at the moment (just arrived at Skyhold) she is firmly convinced that the Maker, at least, means for her to be here.
My Brosca hated the Carta and only put up with it because running out before their mother's debts were paid might result in Rica, the only person even in Dusttown that she cared for, being treated even worse by Beraht. She had plans to run for the surface as soon as Rica had a permanent noble protector (she no longer really cared what happened to her mother.) She didn't much care about darkspawn initially (it isn't as if the dusters are told that much about what's going on) but she almost idolized Duncan because he treated her decently and stood up for her. Her background makes some of her choices and ideas a bit grey (even a dozen years later, she has no compunctions about picking the pocket of anyone who is dressed as 'money' and who treats people like s**t, for instance, and she has most of the Fereldan court convinced she'll poison anyone who really gives Alistair grief) but mostly, she's embraced the role of Warden Commander and likes the surface.
