True, though remember what we hear at Halam'shiral is gossip. Bhelen's sympathetic to the casteless, including surfacers, while Harrowmont is rigidly traditional, so that's going to color what they said (presumably most of them are surfacers.) Not that I didn't prefer Bhelen over Harrowmont myself, just pointing out that the little dwarven content we got may have been intentionally misleading.
A lot of elven history has been disproven since Inquisition debuted, so I'm hoping the inner developments of the Dwarven kingdom is also much more complicated.
For example, House Helmi pushed for the re-claiming of Kal Hirol after Awakening. What if their main argument was discovering the darkspawn had used the smithing equipment to make new armor and weapons? Remember that fully armored ogre outside the gates? That would be a more dire reason that just re-occupying lost territory.
Really excited to be going back into the Deep Roads with the new DLC, though not sure I'll have a lot of time to play it until after September. (We'll see, maybe I'll get lucky). Really hoping there's some Cadash-unique content too.
Either way, the news made me decide it's about time I change my primary wallapaper from the Inquisition cover art to something more befitting my canon Inquisitor:
(For anyone else who likes to play in Photoshop and may want to add their own Inquisitor to the cover art for a wallpaper, you can find a copy of the background I edited iconic Inquisitor out of here.)
Well, I'm kinda bad when it comes to using the CC anyway, only just managed to figure out how to create a good female elf in Origins after 5 years. I take my cap off to the dwarves in this thread and the people who figured out how to create Emilia Clarke or Natalie Dormer within minutes of the game coming out, I have no clue how you all managed that.
I fall into the same trap. I enjoy making dwarves and can spend hours in the CC, but when it comes to humans or elves, I flounder and feel lost. And THEN when I come up with something decent, I'm all proud of myself and then I'll see a screenshot of someone else's character and realize they look a lot a like. Oww. Kinda like all the femSheps start to look the same after a while, if you know what I mean? This is why I really like looking through the Cadash hashtag on tumblr because people have different ideas of beauty and build on that so I will see a face that I didn't know was possible. That particular nose wouldn't work for me, but it does for them and they run with it.
Yeah, I've tended to use preset 5, what about everyone else?
I used preset 4 for my dwarf, but since I wrote down what settings I used to make the face (like mouth #4, eyes #7, etc), I went back to the CC and recreated my dwarf with the same sliders to see how different each preset would turn out to be. (I forgot to take out my eyebrows and no-receding-hairline mod before doing this.)
Spoiler
Preset 1
Preset 2
Preset 3
Preset 4
Preset 5
That was an interesting experiment. I've been wanting to re-roll her now all the mods are coming out. I was never fully happy with the default CC, especially with the terrible eyebrows and hairstyles. I just didn't know if I wanted to stay true to her original design or come up with a different one. More dwarves are never a bad thing.

I confess I've avoided making a dwarven character because I hate the caste system politics. Also the best dwarven armor - from the Legion of the Dead - is only available after the 3rd Act. I don't see the long term benefit of playing for that result.
Hopefully the new DLC will inspire me to try it out.
I'm annoyed with how the Carta Coat for rogues has terrible skin coloring. The ONE coat just for dwarven rogues is limiting. The forearms and hands are pre-colored for light skin tones. No one accounted for dark skin tones on this armor and it's really beginning to bug me. It's difficult to pretend they're gloves and not hands because they made sure to paint knuckles and fingernails on!
I just needed to get that off my chest. Maybe someone on the team will see this and slap it in a patch. A girl can hope...
I'm finally doing a male dwarf. Unlike my two dwarves in DAO i hope to actually finish mine in DAI. I must say I make bad-*** looking dwarves. i mean seriously...
Rubblocke looks like a bad*** dwarf! I love making dwarves but I seem to hate playing dwarves for some random reason. I don't know if it's the whole Gilius Thunderhead thing way back in GOLDEN AXE because "he's overpowered" or what? Lol.
Not everyone will see Harrowmont as a failure. He did save Warden Aeducan, and was betrayed by own brother. Who would you side with in that choice if you were Aeducan?

Editing some video and was annoyed all over again
Argh, so it's not just me! I thought Dorn's arms looked kind of light when I used the Carta armor mod to replace Skyhold's PJs. Blergh, that's really frustrating.

I've gotten the schematic at level 15, shortly after arriving at Skyhold. It's probably possible to get it a few levels earlier, but might be a challenge. I've worn the armor throughout Halamshiral, Adamant, Arbor Wilds, and the final battle. It's still a decent chunk of time to be using it. If there's any dwarven armor available in the DLC, we still have to wait until we reach Skyhold to access the DLC so it may end up being a moot point for you.
I don't think anyone loves the caste system politics, but it is an interesting flaw. Every race has their own problems and this just happens to be the downside for us. Varric's never been to Orzammar and has no love for their system, but his older brother Bartrand still remembered it. It made for a nice contrast between the two. The system seems to already be on its way out with the discovery of the surface tombs and the possibility that the surface dwarves may already be outnumbering those who dwell underground. Orzammar isn't likely to keep sustaining their numbers unless they reopen their doors once more.

And @eggplantred -- the spoils of the qunari armor also suffers from the same issue. I've seen people complaining on tumblr. You can see some examples from the screenshots in this thread where the face color doesn't match the body color: http://forum.bioware...g-still-no-fix/
So I'm going to plug my thread I made just a few minute ago, since it has pretty much everything to do with dwarves. Figure you guys would be interested.

No, it's not challenging at all. You can get it as soon as you get to Skyhold, without any real effort. You can entirely avoid fighting the Venatori guarding the temples by using a rogue with stealth, reload if you do a puzzle wrong and a bunch of level 15 demon guards drop in on you, and completely avoid the dragon without waking it by hugging the outer boundary of the area it's in. I did it at level 13, on nightmare... Not like the difficulty mattered, I didn't fight a single thing getting all the keys and going to the final temple with the schematic in it. Oh, and use your mount for goodness sakes (you'll need it if you run past any level 20 spiders hanging out in the desert).
OK, so we really do need to start our collection of all of our screenshots of "how the hell did they miss this in the dwarf PT?" How about taking her to the BE, giving her a really dark skin tone and trying to get another pic (obviously not at Adamant, lol, but somewhere) showing that this absolutely isn't a trick of lighting?

No need to even do that. I have screenies in regular locations (Haven, Hinterlands, Storm Coast, Crestwood) that show the contrast. That's how I knew they'd painted on the fingernails and knuckles!
I think we should make a thread. BW definitely won't fix it but at least we'll have somewhere to vent. We need a Qunari one too...
It's actually pretty funny how much of a complete failure Harrowmont winds up being. It's like they should give everyone who chose Harrowmont a "you chose wrong" button
To be honest, a lot of that's due to how Bioware has Flanderized Harrowmont and kissed Bhelen's ass, along with a shitload of contradictions.
Like I'll agree between the two Bhelen's the better choice -- though still a hack who's obvious as all hell -- but BW has made a point of just really kissing his ass.
Does anyone know the stats on the Carta Coat schematic you can buy at the BE? I'm not ready to let go yet but I really need to switch to higher level armor than the Carta Coat you find in the Hinterlands.

That's why I'm hoping Bioware will reveal more developments in the DLC. The re-occupuation of Kal Hirol was the biggest push in their recent history. If it's really a major smithing thaig then many opportunities should have opened up for dwarven society.
I think what should happen is the king initiated a 'grand retour' to allow some surface dwarves to live in the thaigs. But the only way to get it approved was through the nobles. Their in-fighting tarnishes it. Returning surfacers are treated like a sub-class of servants, regardless of their skills. Orzammar is the worst place for them but in places like Ortan thaig and Kal Hirol they are treated better, and are guaranteed their own homes. Some families, like House Helmi and House Dace, believe in the king's vision and help push for more thaig reclamation. Dusana Helmi becomes famous for recovering over ten functional golems even though they aren't brought to Orzammar. As the king's health starts to fail, many see these leading houses as contenders of the throne.
Also, the campaign to re-occupy Kal Hirol should be scandalous as well as costly. It was marred with interference by nobles and greed for lyrium deposits. This results in many of the warrior caste refusing to be part of the army. Some prefer to serve a noble house. Ironically, the Legion of the Dead becomes their biggest force underground. They are deployed in three major locations: Kal Hirol, the Deep Trenches, and Ortan Thaig. When the king sends warriors to the Inquisition, most of them are Legionnaires.

No thanks. The storytelling experience gets lost if I intentionally circumvent these obstacles.
My Cadash Inq is 27th; all materials desired completed (ie; only side quests that are in conflict with RP remain). Sadly, this is not a canonical campaign, as some choices made were not exactly in character, but will work for this game.

What obstacles? Go to ruin, read the lore in the ruin, solve the puzzle, get gear and key, go to next ruin. How is the storytelling messed up by that process? Is fighting a group of Venatori first really that vital to the experience of learning about the dwarven lore there?
You talked about stealthing past the mobs to solve the puzzle. If you're leaving your companions behind, then you're missing out on the tomb commentaries provided by IB, Blackwall, or Varric since the stories are connected from tomb to tomb.
Alcina will be level 22 when I take her through the DLC first (with Cole, Dorian/Solas, & IB). Her sister Ferinda will be level 16 (my pre-Revelations Blackwall run). My nightmare run with my rift mage Trev (my Varric run) will be level 20.
