Lance would be for mounted combat only, and spears are awkward dueling weapons. While they should be represented on the battlefield certainly, they wouldn't really be very effective in small group combat (then again, neither would two-handed weapons or dual wielding for that matter....).

Riiiiight whatever you say.  Spears are great one on one, small groups or otherwise, militarily or otherwise.   The spear is man kinds first real weapon and has seen us from hunters and gatherers in small groups up through to modern day.  Respect the spear, without it we'd never have moved past prey animals.

Spears are great yes. But they don't shine in duels. There is no way around this. I am sure Hollywood has done its work on our modern generation in duping people to believe that you can twirl around with it some, and be effective, but sadly that is not the case.

With that being said, the choice of weapon really doesn't have an aweful lot to do with the outcome of the fight. It usually comes down to the skill and physique of the fighters. However, the traits of the spear are better suited for mass formation combat, than it is in a dueling ring or small group combat. Simply because the traits of swords (in particular) and other one-handed weapons leave open the option of the ultimate choice: A shield. (And yes, you could carry a spear and shield at the same time, but there is a reason fighters would ditch the spear during personal combat).

EDIT: Oh and also, evidence would suggest that the club was mankind's first weapon. Just saying.

The sword was originally designed as a backup weapon to the spear.  As for the club, wasn't a very great hunting tool.  It took the spear to get us out of the mud.  The spear has been used effectively in all the ways you're saying it's ineffective for most of humanities existence.  People don't drop their spears unless they have to, the sword is a backup weapon should the worst happen.  Is the sign of a bad warrior to lose your spear and have to rely on your sword.

I'm not a short woman IRL myself. For me, it's less about height, though, than personality and build.

You know what I'd like, my dwarf to wield a huge honking spear....  Maybe Blackwall will let me borrow his... ;)

Awh nice! I'm getting it for the PS4 but wish I had room in my house for a PC xD

I do some of my work from home, so "home office" space (a corner of my bedroom) was a necessity. And like veeia, I don't even own a TV.

Yes, the sword was made as a backup weapon for the spear (in Greece anyway. It isn't really the case in Egypt, Babylon, the Hittites and CERTAINLY not the case in Rome and medieval Europe, but I digress), but guess what the Greeks used the spear for? You guessed it, MASS FORMATION COMBAT. The bloody phalanx. If the phalanx broke, then the soldiers would be FUCKED in close quarter combat with a bloody 6'-8' pole, so yes they had swords, which were MUCH more effective for that type of combat. But the Greeks' main weapon was the spear, yes. I never said that the spear couldn't be used.

And you are correct that the spear was an effective hunting tool. So was the bow. Do you think you used the same spear and arrows in hunting as you used in warfare? Because in that case, you have some education on both subjects to catch up on.

Also, spears were MUCH cheaper and simpler to make than swords. Which is why they saw such prevelance (along with axes and hammers) amongst the commoners of medieval Europe, they simply couldn't afford a sword. And of course the fact, that they are simpler to use effectively (Stand next to your friends. Unite front. Point them towards the enemy. Stab).

But this is a fantasy game, so I am sure if they wanted to, they could add spears. I mean they've already added two-handed hammers (........) and dual-wielding (even more ...........), so sure add all the types of weapon you want. It just doesn't help the (admitedly of secondary importance) realism of the game.

I know I was just trying to steer the conversation. heh  The height of Dwarves actually has very little to do with my opinions and thoughts about them.

I love dwarves because most of the them I have met, have great if not interesting personalities. Plus being some what of a big girl myself, I liked that the female dwarves "were" wide and kinda chubby. I felt I could relate, but now that they have been slimmed down, it angers me a bit but I'll get over it I guess. Its not like they could change it now anyway. They probable changed it because of the "love scenes" I mean forbid we have a big girl among the races or it may be some sort of "graphics issue" idk.  But that aside I love there culture and there will to survive and that they don't have to rely on magic!

Just a note, female dwarves can have stubble and there is nothing wrong with that.

I'm not going to lie, I'm curious as to what my attractive dwarf Lady Inquisitor will look like with a little stubble.  I'm not saying that I'm definitely going to use the stubble, but I can say that I'm definitely going to see what it looks like with the intention of using it if I like it.

Same! If I could give my lady Cadash a mustache, there would be absolutely no question about it....but the stubble I'll have to wait and see how it looks. I imagine I'll skip it, but....I am super curious, I'm going to check it out.

Rewatching the Hero of Thedas trailer, if the person smacking a shield with a sword in a taunt is a female dwarf warrior, they haven't slimmed them out as much as I was afraid of. Whew! Thinner than I'd prefer, just because I prefer the really sturdy, immovable appearance of the older dwarf body type, but better than I was starting to think.

I have to guess that those who like the female dwarf beards mostly aren't women over 45... :P

Solas and Cullen's romance paths have forced me to make my elven mage sooner rather than later, but my second playthrough I'm going back to playing a dwarf with utter glee. I've missed having them as a viable race.

I just miss a female dwarf companion. Anyway if this female dwarf companion we all longed for could be a mage (remember Dagna wanted to study magic and imagine that she could awake some magic abilities for her not like Sandal and his enchantments). That would be more "special" to me.

I don't know why, but dwarves are the one type of character I can go full on bastard with. Where I can be more callous and brutal. Or visit a brothel multiple times with. Maybe there's more psychological detachment (I'm as far from a dwarf as possible). I feel less guilty with them. Everything is funnier.

I don't know if that's really a vote of "support", but there you go. I like them in my own way.

Aside from female dwarf beards, is there anything else newer that people are looking forward to doing with their dwarves in the CC?

The option to finally add scars in CC. They look cool.
